Good morning. It’s Wednesday, April 7, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

MTV Networks International (MTVNI) launches new localized Nickelodeon services under a new carriage deal with UPC digital cable platform in the Czech Republic and Romania.  This marks the first time that kids in the Czech Republic will be able to watch Nick in their local language, and furthers Nick’s presence in Central and Eastern Europe, Russia and Africa to 6+ million households.  The additional distribution on UPC Romania expands the existing distribution of the local language service, which has been available in Romania since February.  Additionally, local language websites ( and ) will support the new Eastern European services.


Robert Zemeckis is set to direct a feature film adaptation of upcoming young adult novel Dark Life, per VarietyDisney and Zemeckis’ ImageMovers are partnering with the Gotham Group (Spiderwick Chronicles) to make the family-targeted futuristic underwater adventure movie.  Gotham Group recently acquired the movie rights to Dark Life, which Scholastic will publish on May 1, 2010.  Dark Life was originally set to be a two-book series but according to the report could now include further titles.  If you are wondering if Dark Life will be motion-capture movie, like ImageMovers Digital’s The Polar Express, Beowulf, A Christmas Carol and the upcoming Mars Needs Moms, you are not alone.  But, earlier this year Disney said that it would close ImageMovers Digital as a cost saving measure  so  we’ll have to wait and see.


RDF Rights inks new broadcast sales and licensing deals for the preschool series Yo Gabba Gabba!  Picking up all three seasons of the series are EBS (Korea) and TV5 (Philippines).  Based on their success with the first two seasons, Nickelodeon Australia, ABC Australia, Vision Media (Kuwait), Disney Latin America, Hop! TV (Israel) and True Spark (Thailand) have recently acquired the third season of the show.  Additionally, this June will see a second Yo Gabba Gabba! Live show hosted by DJ Lance open in Sydney, Australia before moving on to Perth, Brisbane and Melbourne, while the first Yo Gabba Gabba! Live show debuts in Argentina.  Meanwhile the Yo Gabba Gabba! Live!: There’s A Party In My City continues to tour in the US and internationally.  Yo Gabba Gabba! is produced by The Magic Store and Wildbrain Entertainment.

Shaftesbury Sales Company inks a deal for its new TV movie, Vacation with Derek, with Nickelodeon Australia.  Produced by Shaftesbury Films and directed by Michael McGowan (One Week, Saint Ralph), the TV movie brings much of the original cast back together including, Ashley Leggat and Michael Seater, along with Daniel Magder, Jordan Todosey, Ariel Waller, Joy Tanner and John Ralston.  The movie also features guest star Nico Archambault (So You Think You Can Dance Canada season one winner), who also serves as choreographer on the project, and Kate Trotter (Murdoch Mysteries, The Jane Show).

The Animagic Entertainment Group launches an interactive website based on its K6-12 targeted CGI animated series and brand The Balloonatiks at .  The new character driven site features new original animation, downloadable wallpaper and games, as well as the Hot Air City Times newspaper, Airbrain’s Wacky Facts, Bouncer’s Comic Shop that offers a range of comic strips and Balloonatiks products (e.g. books, DVDs, apparel etc.).

Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products (NVCP) signs kid’s food and drink license deals across EMEA:

  • Brands4kids inks a range of SpongeBob SquarePants branded foods in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. The deals focus on low fat, low salt and high fiber snacks and breakfast foods including a fruit snack, crunchy muesli with pineapple and white chocolate flakes, chocolate milk mix with vitamins and calcium, popcorn and chips.
  • In France and Belgium, United Biscuits‘ BN brand gives Dora the Explorer biscuits a make-over, including a new recipe without carbohydrates and new packaging.
  • Greece-based food dye maker Yiotis signs on to supply SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer-branded Easter egg decoration kits for sale in Greece, Cyprus, Georgia, Bulgaria, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Hungary
  • New UK agreements include food deals for with juice bar Boost Juice for Dora the Explorer branded cups with kid’s smoothies, Edible Arrangements for Dora and SpongeBob SquarePants branded fruit bouquets.  Additionally, NVCP has also renewed its deal with Nestle for a range of Dora the Explorer fromage frais.


Michael Eisner’s production company Vuguru appoints Kristin Jones, formerly SVP/Production, International Development at Miramax, as its new Chief Creative Officer, per Variety.  Vuguru also named David Shall as its Head of Business Operations and General Counsel.  He was previously EVP/Business Affairs and General Counsel at FremantleMedia and served in senior business roles at Fox.  Vuguru is backed by Eisner’s Tornante company and Canada-based Rogers Communications.


Disney Channel‘s premiere of its new original series Good Luck Charlie on Sunday, April 4 (8:30-9p), was the network’s biggest Sunday debut in Total Viewers 2+ (4.7 million), K6-11 (2.0 million) and Tweens 9-14 (2.o million).  For the time period, Charlie was the top telecast among K6-11 and Tweens 9-14, as well as the top scripted program with Total Viewers 2+.  Good Luck Charlie is both the most watched series launch since the spin-off series The Suite Life on Deck (September 26, 2008), and  the most watched non-sequel/non-Disney Channel original movie-premiere-driven series premiere among Total Viewers, K6-11 and Tweens 9-14 since Hannah Montana bowed (March 24, 2006).
