CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

04/05/06

Good Morning. It’s Wednesday, April 5, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Katie Couric continues to lead the headlines – today is her 15th anniversary on NBC’s Today, and today is the day many expect she’ll make the oh-for-heaven’s-sake-just-say-it-already! announcement that she’s leaving in favor of the anchor seat at CBS Evening News.  Today show will salute Couric’s 15 years this morning.  Meanwhile, on the replacement front, the best odds seem to be with Meredith Vieira, tho other names being bandied about include Campbell Brown, the weekend anchor of Today; reporter Natalie Morales and news reader Ann Curry.  Meanwhile, over at CBS, predictions are a formal announcement will come this afternoon.

Tonight’s Premieres:
Actually, there are no premieres tonight, but there are two time period premieres – The Amazing Race moves to 8p on CBS, and Law & Order returns to 10p on NBC, moving Heist to 9p.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *
It’s Masters time, and if you’re a golfer or a golf fan, you know what that means.  Azalea bushes, green fairways, and the best golf has to offer from Augusta National.  The coverage begins on Thursday on USA, 4-7p, and again on Friday 4-7p, with a re-broadcast both nights from 8-11p. Then for the weekend, coverage moves to CBS on Saturday from 330-7p, and final round coverage on Sunday from 230-7p. Tiger Woods won the 2005 Masters for the 4th time and will be looking to hold onto his Green Jacket this weekend. Also this weekend, CBS Sportsline will offer streaming video from the so-called Amen Corner, which are the 11th, 12th and 13th holes.

Lifetime is reportedly about to nail down the final details of its deal to acquire off-net series Desperate Housewives from Buena Vista Television.  According to Daily Variety, once the deal is done, effective immediately the show will be re-purposed to Lifetime and air within a few days of its Sunday night airing on ABC, in addition to running five nights a week beginning in 2008.  License fees were not disclosed but are estimates peg it at the half million mark per episode.

VH1 Mobile will launch an original made-for-mobile series called Dingo Ate My Video premiering April 24. Each week, a new episode will feature three to four music videos from stars such as Green Day, Missy Elliot, Depeche Mode or Jewel along with the comedic voices of Dingo and Baby, two puppets who have opposing views and taste in music. Also coming in May from VH1 and Comedy Central, Sprint will be the first mobile carrier to launch Comedy Central’s Take Out and VH1’s Pocket VH1, applications that will enable users to access the networks’ content with their wireless devices. Users will be able to navigate to find streaming video, ringtones or graphics on their mobile phones via a custom interface which will be updated daily. Sprint will have this new service exclusively on select phones for the first four weeks.

The Sundance Channel has green lit the second season of the original series Iconoclasts. The six-episode series will begin airing weekly on October 26. It is produced by @radical.media with Robert Redford as executive producer and Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky as directors.

A new generation of Star Trek fans will discover the cult TV series through the new partnership between G4 and YouTube. G4’s new short Star Trek 2.0 is now available on YouTube featuring classic Star Trek episodes framed with G4’s interactive content. Three additional Star Trek shorts will be uploaded on YouTube throughout April, with G4’s logo, branding and links back to G4’s website.

Beginning May 2, The Discovery Channel will showcase Bruce Parry’s adventures as he discovers ancient tribes and disappearing cultures in the 3-episode season two of Going Tribal.

In a new series on the Style Network, viewers will get to recreate a glamorous celebrity look in their own home for a fraction of the cost. My Celebrity Home debuts on April 26, with host by Peter Marr. Each one-hour episode visits a celebrity and then replicates one of their lavish rooms in a home somewhere in the U.S., while staying inside a $3000 budget.  Celebrities featured include Paige Davis, Hilary Duff, Kathy Griffin and Kimora Lee Simmons, plus the opulent Parlor Suite from the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas.

American Muslim network Bridges TV will make a move from premium pay channel to basic cable in select systems.  These include Buckeye Cable, Globecast Satellite, Shrewsbury Cable, Verizon FiOS TV and WOW! Cable in the Boston, Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Tampa, Toledo and Washington D.C. markets. The channel has also picked up an approval from the Canadian Radio & Television Commission (CRTC) to broadcast in the country. Rogers Cable will launch the channel in the near future.

The CW has added seven more affiliates to its roster, taking its national coverage to more than 76% of the U.S., including 19 of the Top 20 markets and 26 of the Top 30 markets. The new affiliates include:
WWMT-DT/Grand Rapids-Kalamazoo-Battle Creek
WUPV/Richmond-Petersburg
WHDF/Huntsville-Decatur
WLAJ-DT/Lansing
KFDM-DT/Beaumont-Port Arthur
KTVL_DT/Medford-Klamath Falls

Hear ye! Hear ye!  Cynopsis just passed its 9th anniversary on April 2, and at the same time is rapidly approaching it’s 50,000th subscriber. On January 1st of this year, we had 40,000 subscribers, and a week ago we had 48,808. So here’s the question — “On what date will Cynopsis get its 50,000th subscriber?”  The first 3 correct guessers will win a Cynopsis prize, as will the milestone subscriber.  Send in your guess with “50k” in the subject line to cynops3@optonline.net.  Good luck!

And be sure to check today’s edition of Cynopsis: MCE for the monthly installation of Cynopsis MCE Network in Focus.  This month the spotlight is trained on Telehit, a Latino youth-oriented channel with hip, urban lifestyle programming.  If you aren’t subscribed, you can read today’s edition here.

What were you doing at 1:23AM this morning?  Well, it was a monumental moment; the kind of thing that only happens once every 100 years.  With today’s date, April 5, 2006, at the appointed hour this morning it was 1:23 on 4-5-6.   Okay, so “monumental” may be overstating it.  And yet, there’s still time to plan for next year’s 2:34 on 5-6-7.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question: During the ’70s, they told us, “Try it, you’ll like it.”  What was it that they thought we’d like?  ALKA SELTZER.
