Good morning. It’s Wednesday, April 5, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
PBS has unveiled plans to spin-off a new 24-hour digital broadcast channel based on its PBS Kids Go! afternoon programming block for K6-11. Slated to launch October 2006 the PBS Kids Go! Channel is part of the PBS Kids Next Generation Media Initiative. The channel will feature Branded programming blocks including Vayan! (“Go!” in Spanish), a 1hr block Spanish-language block including existing PBS series, such as Maya & Miguel and Cyberchase in Spanish with English subtitles, Go! Family an evening block, and a 1hr slot called Go! Figure will feature educational curriculum programming for teachers to use in class. Series programming will include:
- Fetch! will debut on the PBS Kids Go! afternoon block on May 29. Hosted by an animated dog named Ruff Ruffman, the series focuses on real world science and real kids as they ask questions, conduct experiments and actively investigate the world around them. A sneak peek of the show can be seen viewed pbskidsgo.org. Fetch is funded in large part by the National Science Foundation.
- Series acquired to air on the channel include: Kidsworld Sports, Wishbone and Kratts’ Creatures bowing in 2006, and Animalia set to debut in 2007.
- Other existing series joining the channel from the PBS block are Postcards From Buster, Arthur, Zoom and Dragonfly TV.
MIP-TV 2006 NEWS
AOL’s KOL has inked an English-language distribution deal with Nelvana for its animated series Jacob Two-Two. Kids in the US will be able to watch the adventure series about globe-trotting international spies, mysterious neighbors and horrible school cafeteria food on KOL beginning May 2006. Jacob Two-Two is based on the book series by Mordecai Richler.
Mainframe Entertainment, Inc. and Infinite Frameworks, a Singapore-based visual effects/animation studio, have teamed up to co-produce Ghost Hunter Dax (22 x 26 min), a new CG animated series. Expected to be delivered by fall 2007, Ghost Hunter Dax revolves around a kid, half American/half Chinese, who moves to Shanghai with his family and discovers that he inherited the job of Ghost Hunter from a legendary Chinese warrior. The characters and story were originally created by Brian Zimmerman and further developed with Gregory R. Little of Mainframe.
Cookie Jar Entertainment and its new co-production partner Japanese ad agency Yomiko are introducing Spider Riders (52 x 30 min), a new boy targeted anime series at MIP-TV. Heading into the market Cookie Jar pre-sold the action/fantasy/adventure series to Teletoon (Canada), which premiere the series with a TV movie and then air it as a daily strip show from June 2006. Cookie Jar also plans to launch a game based on the series online (www.spiderriders.com) and via wireless devices; the game will eventually become a Massively Multi-User Online Game. Spider Riders is being produced in Japan by the Bee Train animation studio.
Nicktoons Network and MTVN International have commissioned a second cycle of 26 episodes of the anime series Kappa Mikey from Animation Collective. The first season debuted on Nicktoons Network in the US in February and is set to launch on Nickelodeon’s international channels in Asia, the UK, Spain, France and Europe in May 2006. Created by Larry Schwarz of Animation Collective, Kappa Mikey is Nicktoons Network’s first global acquisition. MTVI distributed the series internationally.
Taffy Entertainment and Moonscoop, in conjunction with Enjoy, a TV & licensing company based in Spain, has sold season one (26 x 30 min or 52 x 11 min) of the CGI preschool series Jakers! The Adventures of Piggley Winks to Spanish terrestrial broadcaster TVE. In addition, TVE will work with both series creators Entara and Enjoy, which manages the rights to Jakers throughout Spain and Portugal, to develop opportunities for the series. Jakers is produced by Mike Young Productions for Entara.
Buena Vista International deals include:
- The UK’s GMTV picked up the free TV rights to Disney Channel’s Playhouse Disney preschool series Little Einsteins. Books and DVDs based on the series will be released in the UK in early 2007 with other products in development.
BVITV has inked two Middle East deals for a new Disney branded block with free-to-air satellite broadcasters MBC and Dubai TV.
- MBC’s block, titled Disney On 3, will air on its kids channel MBC 3, Saturdays-Wednesdays with shows including Kim Possible, Lilo & Stitch: The Series, Recess, The Legend of Tarzan, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command and Toy Story. In addition, MBC acquired the Disney preschool program Little Einsteins and its new series Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.
- Dubai TV’s block will be named Disney Club and run five days a week as a 30-min. slot, and on Thursdays and Fridays as a 60-min block. Programming includes Kim Possible, Lilo & Stitch: The Series, JoJo’s Circus and The Legend of Tarzan. Dubai TV also inked a separate deal to locally produce the reality format Extreme Makeover. It will debut in November 2006
Zone Vision Networks and MTV Networks Europe have signed a 5-year renewal agreement. Zone will continue to act as the network’s exclusive sales agent for Central and Eastern Europe. The deal specifically covers MTV Networks Europe’s MTV European, MTV Base, MTV Hits, MTV2, Vh1 European and Vh1 Classic European in the following territories: Albania, Armenia, Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovak Republic, Slovenia and Ukraine. In Romania, the channels include Vh1 Romania, MTV Romania, MTV2 Romania, Viva, Game 1, Comedy Central and Life.

Radio Disney has launched Radio Disney 2.0, a live 24/7, digital audio stream on RadioDisney.com. The effort is part of Radio Disney’s new strategy to be the turn-to source for kid and family music across a range of media platforms. Radio Disney is currently available online, on 50+ terrestrial radio stations, Sirius and XM satellite radio and on cable TV’s Music Choice channel.
Plaza Sésamo begins production on its 10th season next week at Televisa’s studios in Mexico. The new season of the season of the Spanish-language version of Sesame Street will focus on healthy habits and include new original segments including, Plaza Olimpiadas, in which Mexican and Latin American athletes encourage kids and families to lead a balanced lifestyle by eating well and getting exercise and Cantando por una fruta, where actor Adal Ramones hosts an American Idol parody starring fruit Muppets. The new season will also include segments featuring Columbian kids and their stories, and segments about Argentinean culture. Season 10 will launch on Televisa and Discovery Kids beginning in October, 2006.
Namco Bandai Games America Inc. has entered into an agreement with Universal Studios Consumer Products Group to develop a video racing game based on Universal’s upcoming summer feature film, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. Titled The Fast and the Furious, the game will feature 1-2 player split-screen play and allow up to four people to play online. Developed by Eutechnyx for the PS2 and PSP the game is slated to be released summer 2006.
Simon Flamank has been appointed CEO/TV Loonland effective immediately. Flamank takes over the company following the departure today of Selma Kappel, the previously CEO, who exited the company following a disagreement with the supervisory Board about the future development of the company. Most recently Flamank has worked as a consultant of TV Loonland. Previously Flamank was CEO/Prism Leisure Corporation plc and CFO/The Telstar Entertainment Group plc.
