The new Viacom/Paramount Pictures, Lionsgate and MGM owned premium television channel start-up scheduled to launch next year may have found a fourth partner. The three top potential candidates according to the Pali Research report on prospective partners include Blockbuster Inc., Google and NetFlix. Things are heating up for The Weather Channel as bids to buy the cable network may come from NBC Universal and CBS Corp., per THR. TWC’s owner, Landmark Communications initially put a $5 billion price tag on the network which also includes Weather.com. G4’s new series, Hurl follows five contestants who compete in a speed-eating contest followed by physical challenges intended to shake up their stomachs. In the end, the lone remaining participant who manages to keep everything down wins a cash prize and the title Iron Stomach Award. The 30m series will debut this summer. Okay, that’s gross. ION Media Networks, Inc. is adding to its off-net programming lineup once again, making a deal with CBS Television Distribution for the non-exclusive broadcast rights for Ghost Whisperer. The CBS drama will air on ION Television in primetime starting 2009. LATV, the bilingual/bicultural entertainment and music network that is distributed through digital multicast, is adding nine million more television households based on its new distribution partnership with Tribune Broadcasting. The deal adds three new affiliates for LATV all in major markets: WPIX/New York, WGN/Chicago and KDAF/Dallas. All three stations are CW affiliates. To date, LATV has 33 total affiliates and reaches 32 million television households in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Select Film Fund Management, LLC made a distribution agreement with sports net VERSUS for a reality competition project titled Legends Challenge. The 10 one-hour episodes will showcase host, former NFL pro Tim Brown and other NFL superstars as they put 16 wannabe pro football players through the paces with eliminations happening each week until one player remains. A majority of Gemstar-TV Guide International shareholders approved the $2.8 billion purchase price from Macrovision, according to Multichannel News. The merger deal will take effect this Friday. Macrovision, which manufactures digital-rights management products, will likely keep Gemstar’s interactive program-guide products but may turn around and sell TV Guide magazine, TV Guide Network as well as TVG, the horse racing channel. Crown Media Holdings, Inc., owner and operator of Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel, reupped its distribution deal with Cablevision Systems. The new agreement allows Cablevision Systems to distribute the Hallmark Channel along with the standard and hi-def versions of Hallmark Movie Channel. Fox News Channel will offer its own hi-def version starting tomorrow as Fox News HD debuts initially on Time Warner Cable in certain markets and in specific parts of the New York City metro. Fox News HD will be a simulcast of the standard-definition version of the network. Two more casting notes, according to THR, for The CW’s new version of 90210: Jessica Walter will play Tabitha Mills, the alcoholic grandmother and former Hollywood star, while Ryan Eggold will play Ryan Matthews one of the cooler high school teachers. FX revs up by ordering a new 13-episode series titled Sons of Anarchy from The Shield writer/executive producer Kurt Sutter. The series is a multi-generational family drama revolving around a motorcycle club. Jack a thirtysomething club member, played by Charlie Hunnam, begins to question his involvement as he tries to balance being a responsible father. The drama also stars Katey Sagal as Jack’s mother and female head of the club. Sons of Anarchy is produced by Fox 21 and FX Productions. Lionsgate will venture into the reality genre as the production studio and Michael Hirschorn (VH1’s Flavor of Love) will partner, according to Variety. Lionsgate will bring financial, production and distribution assets to the table for Ish Entertainment, the production company formed by Michael Hirschorn and Stella Stolper earlier this year. Craig Piligian, reality producer and head of Pilgrim Films and Television, has two new series orders on different cable networks, says THR. TLC picked up the six-episode 30m series Masters of Dance which begins production in May. The twist with this dance competition show is the music switches songs mid-dance, forcing the competitors to change their style and remain light on their feet. The second one is a cooking series for A&E with Rocco DiSpirito tentatively titled Rocco to the Rescue.
