Hasbro inks a deal with the boy band One Direction to produce a new line of toys and games based on all five members of the popular group. Featuring all five members of the popular boy band, Hasbro’s One Direction collection will include fashion dolls, mini-figures, among other products and will be sold worldwide, with the exception of the UK and Ireland, in fall 2012. Nickelodeon recently entered into a development deal with One Direction. The band has already appeared on Nickelodeon’s iCarly.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Warner Bros. announces it will release the first full length, theatrical LEGO movie nationwide on February 28, 2014. Currently in production, the 3D CG animated adventure movie is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (21 Jump Street, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs) from their original screenplay, story by creative partners Dan Hageman & Kevin Hageman and Lord & Miller, and of course based on LEGO construction toys. The movie will incorporate some of the popular LEGO figures as well as introducing several new characters. The LEGO movie is produced by Dan Lin (Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows) and Roy Lee (The Departed, How to Train Your Dragon).

LICENSING

American Greetings Properties (AGP) and international licensing agent Exim have entered into a new licensing apparel deal with Lanatex for Holly Hobbie and Friends in Latin America. The new girls apparel line will launch this summer 2012 and include t-shirts, sleeveless shirts, polos, long sleeved shirts, pants, jeans, shorts, overalls, Bermuda shorts, jackets, skirts, dresses, 2 piece and 3 piece sets, and pajamas. The items will be available at department, specialty, convenience, mass market, and hypermarket stores throughout Venezuela, Ecuador, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Jamaica, Bahamas, Antigua, Barbuda, Dominica, and the Grenadine islands.

McDonalds Europe teams with Cepia, creator/manufacturer of ZhuZhu Pets and related properties, will feature a ZhuZhu Pets and Kung Zhu promotion in 42+ Countries internationally, excluding the UK. Lisle International handles the licensing program for Cepia’s ZhuZhu Pets. The promotion will launch early this May 2012 in some territories and run through October 2012, and will involve approximately 6245 restaurants in Europe. In addition to the promotional Happy Meal, ZhuZhu Pets and Kung Zhu will be featured on the new interactive website www.happystudio.com for one year, which will showcase the ZhuZhu club house that can be monitored by the parents/guardian.

Kid’s Book-based property, Pinkalicious, is teaming up with Burger King Corp. (BKC) for a spring 2012 BK Crown promotion featuring Pinkalicious and her magical world. The new Pinkalicious promotion launches this week and runs through June 3, 2012 at participating Burger King restaurants nationwide. Customers will receive one of six Pinkalicious premiums with the purchase of a kids meal, including a figurine with ring comb, Star Bright Wand, tiara, journal, friendship bracelets or hair play barrettes. BKC will support the Pinkalicious promotion with an online presence on BKCrown.com, which will showcase interactive Pinkalicious content. The program is also being promoted in participating restaurants with a Pinkalicious BK Crown box and a point-of-purchase display. The Joester Loria Group is the exclusive worldwide licensing agency representing Pinkalicious. Pinkalicious books have sold 8+ million copies, and the stage show, Pinkalicious, the Musical, can currently be seen in NYC, LA, Chicago, London, and Toronto. MORE KIDS STUFF

Cartoonist Jim DavisPaws partners with LA-based content distribution/management company SoPeachi Entertainment for the digital release of the animated series Garfield and Friends (121 episodes) and 10 primetime Garfield TV specials, as well as Davis’ US Acres. The deal will see SoPeachi release the digitally re-mastered content with new artwork on digital platforms for the first time on May 15, 2012. Based on Davis original Garfield comic strip, which debuted in 1978, Garfield and Friends ran on the CBS Saturday morning programming block from 1988-94 (in reruns through 1995).

Nick Jr. UK acquires all three seasons of Zinkia‘s animated series Pocoyo in a deal with kid/family entertainment content distributor Cake. Pocoyo’s season three, Let’s Go Pocoyo (52×7), is set premiere in the UK on Nick Jr. this fall 2012, with associated linear simulcast on other platforms, and the series will also be featured on Nick Jr.’s SVOD services on partner platforms. Pocoyo currently airs daily in the US on Nick Jr. as half-hour series. CAKE handles international television distributor for Pocoyo for all territories outside of the US, Latin America, Spain, Italy, Portugal and China (which Zinkia maintains distribution rights), following Zinkia’s acquisition in April 2011 of a 51% stake in the London-based family entertainment company.

HIT Entertainment completes a new TV sale deal for Chapman Entertainment‘s animated preschool series Little Charley Bear to Channel One Russia Worldwide for broadcast on its Carousel channel later in 2012. Under the deal Channel One Russia Worldwide picks up the rights for the first season (52×7) of Little Charley Bear. HIT serves as distribution agent for Chapman Entertainment.

Sesame Workshop debuts 12 new episodes from the latest season of Sesame Street (season 42), as well as Sesame Street Classics: Volume 2, which contains four episodes each from seasons 5, 15 and 25, on iTunes (www.itunes.com/sesamestreet) this week. Season 42 of Sesame Street supports numeracy and literacy for preschoolers as well as focusing on the STEM curriculum (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), encouraging school readiness and critical thinking skills  these episodes feature celebrity appearances by Nicole Kidman, John Krasinski, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Sofia Vergara, and of course the Muppets. Sesame Street Classics: Volume 2 includes classic Muppets segments such as the Yip Yips and Two-Headed Monster, BFFs Bert and Ernie, Grover as the waiter at Charlie’s restaurant, and pals Big Bird and Snuffy, as well as parodies like “Barn in the USA” with Bruce Stringbean and the S. EXECUTIVE MOVES

Planeta Junior, a producer of animated series as well as exploiter of content rights for TV, film, DVDs, books, licenses, promotions and publications, looks to expand and support its efforts in Central and Eastern European countries by opening a new office in Prague, Czech Republic. Heading up the new Prague office will be Majka Kadlecova, serving as Sales Manager, under the leadership of Managing Director Ignacio Segura and International Commercial Director Erwann Chabot. This new office in Prague will be followed by a new office in Moscow by the end of the year. Planeta Junior was established in 2000 as a result of the joint venture between Grupo Planeta and DeAgostini.

RATINGS

The Hub set a new ratings record with its two-episode special My Little Pony Friendship is Magic Royal Wedding Event on Saturday, April 21 at 1p and 1:30p, delivering the best numbers for any series in the network’s history. The first episode of the My Little Pony Friendship is Magic royal wedding two-parter at 1p now serves as The Hub’s best telecast in its history with K2-11 (336,000) and K6-11 (218,000) up over the same time last year by + 1100% and +1047% respectively. The second episode at 1:30p becomes the network’s second best telecast ever with K6-11 (211,000) an increase of +654%. Additionally, The Hub’s debut of a new episode of The Aquabats! Super Show on Saturday, April 21 at 11a was the best telecast for the series ever among K2-11 (180,000) up by +11% year-to-year and K6-11 (111,000) up +6% and Total Viewers (321,000) an increase of +27%.
