Good morning. It’s Wednesday, April 25, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

The end of this week looks like it will also bring the end of Atlanta-based Black Family Channel.  The 24-hour channel is expected to conclude talks with Gospel Music Channel (GMC) to hand over its 16 million subscribers to GMC, which currently has 10 million subscribers.  As such, it will stop airing as a linear cable channel as of April 30, according to Multichannel News.  Although Black Family Channel will not shut down its operations, neither channel has revealed their future plans.  Black Family Channel was founded by and co-owned by Willie Gary, Cecil Fielder, Marlon Jackson, Alvin James, and Evander Holyfield with African-American and family-focused programming managed by Robert Townsend.  The lack of significant distribution is quoted as the main reason for Black Family Channel’s demise.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Xinhua Finance Media’s Production Group has been tapped to develop cartoon characters and TV programming for focusing on fire prevention for National Fire Services Department.  According to its three-year deal with Beijing Ancheng Cultural Development Company, a subsidiary of National Fire Services Department, the Production Group will produce Fire-Fighting, a 52-episode animated series, as well as on-air promo spots based on the fire fighter characters.  Under the deal XFMedia will complete the first 18 episodes of the series in an 18-month period, and all 52-episodes within two years.  XFMedia will own the intellectual property and all broadcast rights to the series.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The National Football League has teamed with Nickelodeon to deliver health and wellness messaging to kids nationwide through the 2007 Let’s Just Play campaign, the network’s health initiative with partner the Alliance for a Healthier Generation.  The pact includes a new series of Workout Like A Pro interstitials, which will feature NFL players providing fitness tips and are set to debut on Nickelodeon beginning April 29, including running on Nickelodeon and on Nickelodeon VOD as well as iTunes.  The partnership will also see NFL players as spokesmen for the campaign, taking part in local community outreach efforts through the NFL’s Youth Education Town community centers, and helping drive registration for the Let’s Just Play Go Healthy Challenge. The NFL will also work with Nickelodeon to build awareness for the network’s 4th annual Worldwide Day of Play during its pre-season this fall, to distribute Let’s Just Play materials via some of its youth programs, and post information on the campaign on NFLRush.com, the league’s youth website.

Bindass is the official name of India’s upcoming youth-targeted broadcast channel from UTV in association with Astro Measat.  The name was selected following quantitative research conducted with people 15-24.  Designed to be a full entertainment brand, Bindass is slated to launch in mid 2007 and will also include a mobile channel, 3 websites, original games, merchandising and so on.  Bindass will team with partners for radio and print content. Plans for Bindass include the launch of multiple channels across languages in India and Southeast Asia.  Last year UTV and Astro debuted their joint kid-targeted channel, Astro Ceria, on the Astro platform across Malaysia and Indonesia.  Additionally, UTV was the company behind India’s kid’s channel, Hungama TV, which has since been acquired by Disney.

Scholastic and Hoy, a US Spanish-language newspaper, have partnered to introduce Sabias que …?, a new bi-weekly column specifically for Latino parents.  The column, written by Scholastic Family Reading Expert, Teresa Mlawer, offers information and resources to parents to help support family literacy and learning in their families.  Mlawer is the President, Lectorum, Inc., a subsidiary of Scholastic, and the oldest Spanish-language book publishing and distribution company in the US.  Hoy offers daily editions in NY, LA and Chicago.

Canada’s newly re-branded Teletoon channel is set to launch two new digital services, Teletoon VOD and Mobile TV, on April 27 and May 15 respectively.

  • Teletoon will offer 50 shows, in ten bundled packages, to subscribers of Shaw Video On Demand.  By the end of July 2007 this will increase to 20 bundles. On the same date, four free Teletoon shows will be available On Demand to Rogers Digital Cable customers.
  • TELUS wireless customers across Canada will be able to watch Teletoon programming, in both English and French, on TELUS Mobile TV.

Taffy Entertainment has completed a number or new sales in the Middle East.  E-Vision (UAE) has picked up Dive Olly Dive! (52×11′), SamSam (52×7′)  the new preschool targeted 3D HD animated series based on the comic book of the same name, as well as second season of Pet Alien and ToddWorld.  Additionally, MBC (UAE) has acquired Growing Up Creepie (52×11′).

Sulake Corporation, parent company of teen-targeted Habbo Hotel, has acquired Finland’s social networking company Dynamoid Oy, which owns the social network service IRC-Galleria.  Sulake plans to launch a new international social networking service based on IRC-Galleria.  According to the Helsinki-based Sulake, the deal makes it the largest online company in the Nordic region. IRC-Galleria is targeted primarily to young adults 12-25.  Terms of the deal were not released.

Tomorrow look for the Cyn opsis Weekender College Edition sponsored by Greek, A New ABC Family Original Series coming in July. The edition will include four editorials on television chosen from the 150+ essays submitted from college students all around the world.  The edition will also include a special section of Situation Wanted ads sent in by college students all looking to be hired into our industry.  Be sure to pay special attention to these ads!

MARKETING/LICENSING

Singer/songwriter Avril Lavigne is promoting her newly released CD, The Best Damn Thing (RCA Records), with anime shorts, developed by the performer and which are available on Anime Network’s mobile offering.  Additionally, as part of the overall cross-promotional effort for the CD, Lavigne created Make 5 Wishes, a manga series published by Del Rey Manga simultaneously with the CD release.  Last week Del Rey Manga went back to press for a second printing of the first volume of Lavigne’s Make 5 Wishes manga, just a few days after going on sale.  Volume 2 of Make 5 Wishes is set to go on sale July 3, 2007.

Cartoon Network Enterprises has completed three new softlines partner deals for Cartoon Network’s animated, property Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends.  The new multi-year US merchandise rights deals will feature products targeted to juniors and tweens:

  • Loungefly products Fosters products will include accessories, bags, totes and purses, buttons, stationery, hair accessories, lanyards and mobile phone charms etc.
  • H.E.R. Accessories will create custom jewelry and a range of accessories (belts, buckles, bandanas etc).
  • T.U.K. will design and distribute a line of Fosters canvas, slip-on footwear (aka skimmers), which will be available from June 2007.

Scholastic Media is launching a new marketing campaign for its animated TV series Maya & Miguel.  The multi-tiered effort aims to build awareness and a personal connection with consumers and the property.  The initiative begins with a national sponsorship with US Youth Soccer, which will host Maya & Miguel branded soccer events.  As part of its relationship with US Youth Soccer, Maya & Miguel will have a presence at 12 Kohl’s American Cup Tournaments across the US now through September 2007.  Additionally, grassroots efforts feature two campaigns; Maya & Miguel will serve as the spokes-characters for the annual Dia de los Ninos (Children’s Day) on April 30, and Scholastic is working with Junta Hispana to highlight Hispanic Heritage Month.

Warner Bros. Digital Distribution and Hong Kong-based Artificial Life, Inc., a provider of mobile 3G technology, have teamed up to develop a Happy Feet mobile game, based on the animated movie of the same name, for the Japanese market.  The Happy Feet mobile game will be distributed in Japan in mid 2007 to coincide with the DVD release of Happy Feet there.

Build-A-Bear Workshop and Rainforest Cafe have joined to open Build-A-Bear Workshop At Rainforest Cafe-Where Wild and Wonderful Friends Are Made.  The new shops will be set in several Rainforest Café locations, and will offer ten different animals including a white tiger and red-eyed tree frog.  The first store opens this week at the Galveston Island, Texas location.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Eric Greenwald joins Whyville as EVP/Advertising Sales and Business Development for the Whyville site in addition to all of the online properties at parent company, Numedeon, Inc.  Most recently Greenwald was SVP/New Media Sales & Marketing, DIC Entertainment.  Previously, Greenwald was VP/Immersive Advertising & Business Development for NeoPets, Inc., he also spent 20 years in the Motion Picture Division at Paramount.
