Good Morning, it’s Wednesday, April 25, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Yahoo, Huffington Post and Slate.com will produce two presidential debates online, the first debate in history where the participating candidates will not be in the same room. Moderator Charlie Rose will be on camera in one location while a Yahoo crew will film each candidate at various other locations. Rose will receive email questions from users and pose them to the candidates, with additional interactive features to be offered on the three sites. The Democratic debate is scheduled for after Labor Day and the Republican version will occur sometime after that. The debates can be seen at the Yahoo elections page, which aggregates content from social media properties including Answers, Groups, Flickr, News, MyBlogLog, Yahoo! Video and Upcoming.org.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Lifetime announced a redesign of LifetimeTV.com launching in June, featuring a new broadband player with original movies and series, and mini sites profiling characters, blogs, chats, interviews and interactive forums. Lifetime will fold-in lifestyle content from Hearst partners such as Redbook, Country Living and Good Housekeeping. Starting this summer, it will add downloadable casual games from Real Arcade. The network also announced a multiple carrier WAP application planned for fourth quarter.
 
CMT made several original shows – CMT Comedy Stage, Foxworthy’s Big Night Out, Prankville, Trick My Truck and Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders – available for purchase on multiple online outlets including iTunes, Amazon Unbox, AOL Video, Wal-Mart, and coming soon, Xbox Live Marketplace.
 
BravoTV.com added a component for Shear Genius, taking users back through the history of hair styling. Brilliantbutcancelled.com is featuring videos of contestants trying out for the show. A SheerGenius mobile WAP site is also available at WAP.BravoTV.com, where users can sign up for behind-the-scenes messages and weekly hair tips.
 
DIY Network is at work constructing its first Blog Cabin, one of ten vacation getaways it is building from scratch based on suggestions of more than 2,800 blog comments submitted on DIY.com. Home building expert Amy Devers, who will host a TV series debuting on DIY August 16 based on the project, will lead discussions about how best to construct the log cabin on the site.
 
NBC O&O site WNBC.com will offer comprehensive coverage of the Tribeca Film Festival running April 25 through May 5 in New York. The mini site, co-produced with lx.tv, will feature daily podcasts, celebrity interviews, festival trailers and Spanish-language reporting from sister-station WNJU, Telemundo47.
 
The recently rebranded Canadian animation network Teletoon will launch a video on demand service on April 27 and a mobile TV service on May 15. Teletoon’s VOD service will offer 50 shows parceled as 10 bundled packages to Shaw Digital subscribes from this month and an additional 10 bundles to Shaw and Rogers customers from July. Telus Mobile TV will add Teletoon cartoons to its platform in both English and French.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
 

Video search start-up CastTV secured $3.1 million in financing from Draper Fisher Jurveston. The company also announced it has signed a two-year deal with “a major media corporation” to provide online video crawling and indexing technology for the company’s online video search offering. CastTV, planning to launch sometime later this year, is trying to become the most comprehensive video search tool by including both professional and amateur producers and crawling the web to find additional information about videos from open source episode guides.
 
User generated videos and mashes created on the PhotoBucket site are back up on MySpace after being blacked out earlier this month. PhotoBucket, which has been reportedly up for sale, offers free editing, remixing and management tools to its community of more than 40 million registered users. No explanation from either MySpace or PhotoBucket on what happened here!
 
English Premier League soccer website EPLTalk.com launched its first video podcast published in the U.S., featuring a behind-the-scenes tour of the GolTV studios and an interview with GolTV commentator Ray Hudson.
 
Viva social networking! MySpace launched a Spanish version of its social networking site to serve the more than 28 million Hispanics who call Spanish their first language.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

A U.S. Court of Appeals judge told Voice-over-IP provider Vonage it could continue to sign up new customers while the company appeals a previous court decision that ruled it violated patents held by Verizon Communications.
 
Wi Fi start-up Fon signed a deal with Time Warner Cable to allow Roadrunner customers to use the company’s router to create public hot spots. The La Fonera device splits a Wi-Fi connection into two channels, one that is encrypted for the subscriber and one accessible by anyone within range of the signal. Fon, which counts Google, Ebay and Skype among its investors, charges $2 to $3 per day for non-members to connect, compared to the more than $10 charged by T-Mobile at Starbucks hot spots.
 
RCN Corp. launched a new “shop online” service enabling video, voice and data customers to sign up for services and schedule installation dates online.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Anheuser-Bush drastically reduced traffic expectations for bud.tv, adjusting its original goal of 3 million monthly visitors to a goal of 500,000 by the end of its first year of operation next February. Bud.tv’s traffic fell 40% in March to 153,000 visitors, according to Ad Age.
 
Videoegg announced it has powered more than 60 online video ad campaigns in the past three months for major advertisers including General Motors, Ford, L’Oreal, ABC and Electronic Arts. Videoegg distributes ticker ads, which invite uses to interact with advertiser content, to online communities including Bebo, Tagged and myYearbook.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~
 

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) released its latest global broadband statistics. As feared, the U.S. ranks 15 out of 30 member nations in broadband use per capita, down from 12th place six months ago and 4th place in 2001. The U.S. is now 20th in terms of broadband penetration growth rates over the past year. The report should give plenty of ammunition for legislators pushing for more competition among providers. The NCTA issued a letter on Monday to remind Capitol Hill the U.S. has more broadband subscribers – 49 million ­– than any other country in terms of sheer numbers.
 
Cost is the primary concern for current and future prospective users of mobile TV services, according to a comScore survey of more than 2,000 mobile phone subscribers. However 67% of respondents interested in subscribing to Mobile TV said they would be willing to watch ads in exchange for free subscriptions. The study also found that nearly two-thirds of current mobile TV subscribers are male and nearly half are below the age of 35. Among the current branded services Verizon’s V-Cast generated highest awareness, recognized by 22 % of respondents, compared to 9 % awareness for MobiTV and 3% for Modeo.
 
ABC News Digital’s coverage of the Virginia Tech shootings drove the largest percentage increase of users compared to other news sites, according to ABC analysis of Nielsen NetRatings data. On Tuesday, April 17, ABC News Digital showed the highest percent increase in unique users compared to a week before among top gaining news sites:

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

David Botkin was named Senior Vice President, Research & Audience Analytics of CBS Interactive, reporting to Patrick Keane, EVP, Chief Marketing Officer. In the newly created position he will establish metrics and analytics for the division’s audience research department, working to provide clients with accurate multiplatform measurement tools that encompass interactive applications. David spent the last 5 years at eBay in various research and analytics roles.
 
Turner expanded the role of TNT/TBS programming chief Michael Wright to include oversight of Turner Classic Movies. He was named Senior Vice President of the newly created Content Creation Group, responsible for original programming on all three networks’ linear channels and digital extensions. He will continue to report to Steve Koonin, president of Turner Entertainment Networks, who added TCM to his portfolio after Tom Karsch left the company.
 
Jennie Baird was named Senior Vice President, Editor-in-Chief of NBCU’s iVillage.com. Before joining the woman’s lifestyle portal she created and developed interactive video program AOL Coaches. Jennie will report to Deborah Fine, president of iVillage. Former COO of iVillage Ezra Kucharz left the company to join Oberon Media, creator of casual games, according to paidcontent.org.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Personalized video platform Pyro.tv entered its beta 2 phase of testing late last month. Pyro.tv, from the Vibe Journal creators Vibe Solutions, is yet another video aggregator, but it has nice look and feel and its user interface is very intuitive. It lets you create personalized channels, search for video by genre or most popular, embed clips and view subscriptions of other users. The personalization feature is the differentiator here, as is the fact that all the videos viewed at the site are streamed rather than downloaded to a software-based player. Many of us in cyberspace are leery of downloading foreign objects to our desktops, so video platforms that don’t require it may have an advantage going forward.
