Good morning. It’s Wednesday, April 23, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.
qubo has created a set of nutritional guidelines designed to “dictate advertising decisions” (on-air and online) for the qubo channel and its like named programming blocks on NBC, Ion Television and Telemundo. This effort builds off of Ion Media Network’s advertising and media initiative to fight childhood obesity unveiled last summer for both qubo and Ion Life. Developed with an expert in childhood obesity, qubo will now only accept ads from those company’s that meet the acceptable nutritional intake criteria set out in its new guidelines, which includes limits for meals and snacks broken down by calories, grams of fat, as well as saturated and trans fat, sugar, protein, fiber and sodium. Last week qubo introduced a new series of kid-aimed healthy eating and exercise Public Service Announcements with partners US Dept. of Health & Human Resources, the Ad Council and the US Olympic Committee.

Miley Cyrus, star of Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana, inks an international book deal with Disney Book Group. Cyrus will pen a book, her first, about her life so far including her family life and relationships, friends and professional career on TV, and as a recording star. The book will be published in early spring 2009. In addition to her TV series, movies, concert tour, and forthcoming album. Disney has published and sold 15+ million Hannah Montana books worldwide.
Arab Digital Distribution, a pay TV platform and management company in the Middle East and North Africa, has added Turner’s Boomerang channel in Arabic to its offerings on Art, which features Arabic entertainment, Pehla airs Asian entertainment, and FirstNet that programs international entertainment.
Decode Enterprises has inked a number of deals for Out of the Blue Enterprises’ preschool series Super Why! Nick Jr. in the UK has acquired the series, also picking up the show is Singapore’s Kids Central, and Korea’s KidsTalkTalk channel, ATV, EBS, Hana TV and Iconix Entertainment. Super Why! is produced by Out of the Blue Enterprises in conjunction with Decode Entertainment. Decode Enterprises, a distribution division of DHX Media, holds worldwide TV distribution rights, excluding the US.
Cambium Catalyst International Entertainment (CCI Entertainment) has sold Frankenstein’s Cat (30×11), the K6-11 2D CG animated series to, ARD for air on its kids channel KI.KA (Germany), and MNET (South Africa). Based on author Curtis Jobling’s book Frankenstein’s Cat, the series is produced by Mackinnon & Saunders and Kayenta Productions, and licensed and distributed by CCI Entertainment.
New episodes of the preschool series Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Handy Manny will debut during a six-hour marathon of both shows on Playhouse Disney on Saturday, May 10 6a-12 noon.
MARKETING/LICENSING
PorchLight Home Entertainment unveils plans to launch a new label, PorchLight Inspire, which will release family-centric faith-based and inspirational content on DVD. The first title to be released on DVD under the new label is Adventures From the Book of Virtues: Adventures in Faith, will be available from August 12, 2008. Additionally, in Q1 2009, PorchLight Inspire will launch a Christian version of Jay Jay the Jet Plane, a “re-imagined” version of the original secular series, on DVD.
EA and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment will release Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince movie tie-in video game later this year to coincide with Warner Bros. release of the feature film adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s sixth Harry Potter book of the same name. In development at EA’s Bright Light studio in the UK, the Half-Blood Prince game will be released for just about every game format you can think of, with a particular focus on use for the Wii controller system, which makes sense given there will be more wizard duels and Quidditch matches. The movie, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, will be released November 21, 2008.
Asia gets a visit from Disney Live this summer with the launch of Three Classic Fairy Tales show at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center in Shanghai on May 27. The show will continue on to Beijing and nine additional cities in China before making its way to other parts of Asia. Produced by Feld Entertainment, the live show features Mickey Mouse and his buds, and a collection of stories Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella and beauty and the Beast.
Wizards of the Coast expands its line of Star Wars Miniatures and Roleplaying Games this year, debuting new products based on Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the new animated feature (Aug. 15, 2008) and TV series from Lucasfilm Animation, and various storylines featured in the Star Wars movies, novels and comic books.
- Knights of the Old Republic, also a 60-figure set, this August 2008.
- Star Wars Miniatures will debut November 2008, with a new starter set and 40-figure booster set.
- Last month marked the release of Legacy of the Force, a 60-figure miniatures set based mainly on the Star Wars: Legacy Dark Horse comic book series

Cartoon Network’s premiere of Ben 10: Alien Force, the newest extension of its Ben 10 storyline, last Friday, April 18, at 8-9p set four new records of the network, as the most-watched original series premiere in the network’s history among K6-11 (1,155,000), Boys 6-11 (889,000), boys 2-11 (1,154,000) and HH (2,065,000). Cartoon Network’s previously most watched original series premiere among K6-11 was Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, which had its debut on August 13, 2004.
