Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, April 20, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. 

This week marks PBS Kids launch of Play-Along Videos, a series of online preschool-targeted educational and developmental videos that combine video shorts and interactive game play elements.  Available on the PBS Kids Video Player ( www.pbskids.org/video/  ), each of the Play-Along Videos invites kids to interact with characters from PBS Kids series and help them complete a task (e.g. matching, word choice).  At launch, Play-Along Videos feature series Dinosaur Train and Super Why.  An additional Play-Along Video featuring The Cat In The Hat Knows A Lot About That! will be available from early 2012.

MORE KIDS STUFF

LoveFilm, a UK unit of Amazon.com that is basically like a European version of Netflix, and Disney UK & Ireland enter into a VOD and SVDO feature film streaming deal that features 50+ Disney movies, including kid/family movies.  The agreement sees LoveFilm become Disney’s first partner in US SVOD outside of the Pay TV window.  LoveFilm members will be able to stream titles instantly as part of their subscription ($9.78 or more a month) on the LoveFilm Player, either on a PC, via in-home connected devices or the PlayStation3.  Movies included as part of the deal are titles such as Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Dead Poets Society, Armageddon, Cocktail and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.  Recent Disney releases, including Tron: Legacy, Tangled, and I Am Number Four, will be available to watch instantly on LoveFilm’s TVOD (pay-per-view) service.  LoveFilm already rents all available Disney DVD and Blu-ray titles via its rental-by-mail service.

The Hub will offer a lineup of mini-marathons this Sunday, April 24, Easter Sunday, of friends and family-themed episodes of its shows including Strawberry Shortcake’s Berry Bitty Adventures (8-10a), My Little Pony Friendship is Magic (11a-1p), and Pictureka! (1-4p), and a special presentation of Chuck’s Big Air Dare (10-11a).

Al Jazeera Children’s Channel acquires several properties from India’s DQ Entertainment (DQE).  Under the new broadcast deal Al Jazeera Children’s inks exclusive pacts with 22 Arabic states for the broadcast rights to DQE’s animated series: the 3D HD The Jungle Book (second season 52×11); the HD animated series New Adventures of Lassie (26×22), and the 2D animated series Mysteries of Feluda (13×22 series and 1×52 movie).

MARKETING/LICENSING

BabyTV enters into a baby/toddler publishing deal in Portugal with new licensee Edicoes Convite a Musica (ECM), known for publishing musical books for kids.  ECM will launch a selection of musical books under the Musicas para Bebes label in the second quarter of 2011 with six titles of Animais (animals), Dancar e Cantar (dance and play), Cantar e Contar (sing with numbers), Jogos Corporais (activities), Dormir e Sonhar (bedtime) and Dias Especiais (special days).  Each book title includes a CD & DVD (DAVD  digital audio video disc) featuring five popular nursery rhymes including written lyrics as well as animated video content from some of BabyTV’s shows.  BabyTV’s Portuguese agent, Popcorn, negotiated the deal.

UK-based licensing agent Fluid World signs onto represent rights and develop a consumer products program for the Chupa Chups lollipop brand, which was founded in 1958.  Under the deal Fluid World will manage all licensing for the brand and PR and marketing for the Chupa Chups consumer products program in the UK and Ireland.  Targeting teens as its core consumer, the Chupa Chups licensing line will feature items across a range of categories including fashion apparel and accessories, beauty, gift, housewares, and stationery.  The iconic Chupa Chups logo designed by artist Salvador Dalí in 1969 will be central to the design of all licensed products.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Cartoon Network Korea appoints Chin-won Chang as GM.  An entertainment industry veteran, Chang will be responsibility for the network’s revenue, ratings and brand presence, as well as oversee the strategic development and implementation of new business, including licensing and interactive.  Prior to this Chang was GM of Tooniverse, where he has toiled since 1995.  Cartoon Network Korea was launched in 2006 as a joint venture between Turner Broadcasting System and JoongAng Ilbo.

Mind Candy, the company behind Moshi Monsters, is opening a NY office and named Eric Karp to head its newly formed Americas Licensing Division.  Karp will oversee the development, expansion and roll out of a Moshi Monsters licensing program for the Americas, and build a US-based team.  Karp will report to Darran Garnham, Mind Candy’s Head of Global Licensing.  Karp was most recently with Massiverse where he served as Head of Global Licensing for the boy-targeted action property Dragons s Robots.  He has worked in the kid’s licensing arena for almost two decades, including senior positions with Chorion, MGM Studios, Copyrights Ltd., and Saban/Fox Family Worldwide.  Licensing partners are already signed on include Spinmaster (toy distribution partner), Scholastic (publishing distribution partner), Topps (trading cards) and Basic Fun (keychains). Books and trading cards are already available in the US, with toys and other key lines set to launch this summer.

RATINGS

Disney Channel‘s original movie Lemonade Mouth premiered on Friday, April 15 (8-9:55p) was the top telecast on TV for the night among K6-11 (2.3 million) and Tweens 9-14 (2.1 million), and the cable TV’s top original movie of 2011 among Total Viewers (5.7 million).  Lemonade Mouth’s audience grew over the two-hour telecast, start to finish, with K6-11 up by +32%, Tweens 9-14 and increase of +29%, and up by +22% among Total Viewers.  Additionally, The Lemonade Mouth soundtrack, released by Walt Disney Records on April 12, made its way to the number one spot on the iTunes Soundtrack chart.

Nickelodeon‘s new series Supah Ninjas premiered on Saturday, April 16, at 8:30p with 3.1 million Total Viewers, and was the top show in its time period across all TV with K2-11 1.7 million, K6-11 1.4 million, and Tweens 9-14 1.1 million, which were all up over last year’s like time period by +37%, +37%, and +35% respectively.
