Cynopsis: Kids!
04/01/09
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, April 1, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Disney announced during its ShoWest presentation that the 3D versions of Pixar‘s Toy Story and Toy Story 2 would be released as a double feature on October 2, 2009. The movies will run in theaters as a 2-week limited engagement. This is a change in the studio’s original release plan for the 3D versions of the movies, with Toy Story in 3D initially set for October, and Toy Story 2 in 3D to follow in February 2010. Of course this is all building up to the release of Toy Story 3 in 3D on June 18, 2010. And … a 3D version of Beauty and the Beast is also on the way.
Elsewhere, Disney and IMAX Corporation unveil plans to release the feature film Alice in Wonderland, directed by Tim Burton in IMAX 3D theaters simultaneously with the film’s wide release on March 5, 2010. This is the third film confirmed out of the five-film agreement between IMAX and Disney, which was announced in 2008. Burton’s Alice in Wonderland stars Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Anne Hathaway as the White Queen and Mia Wasikowska as Alice.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
CBBC orders another new series, this one called Roy (13×28), a live-action series featuring an animated squash and squish kid. The HD series is set in a suburb of Dublin and revolves around Roy, an 11-year-old boy that is totally normal, well, except for the part where he is animated. Set to transmit in fall 2009, Roy wants to be an average kid, which is hard when he involuntarily turns blue when he’s sad or has a halo of birds when he bumps his head. Roy is produced by JAM Media.
Disney acquires author Clete Smith’s not-yet-published young adult novel Grandma’s Intergalactic Bed & Breakfast for Mandeville Films (Beverly Hills Chihuahua) to adapt as a family movie, per Variety. The book revolves around a boy who visits his hippie grandma for the first time and discovers her bed and breakfast secretly caters to aliens.
