Good morning. It’s Wednesday, April 17, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Today’s Top Headlines
We’ve got kids news covered for you daily during Upfront season…

DreamWorks Animation made public its picks to replace two board members who are stepping down at the company’s annual meeting on May 29. The studio will nominate former Hulu CEO Jason Kilar and Universal Music Group CEO Lucian Grainge to its board; the two would replace outgoing members Nathan Myhrvold, CEO of Intellectual Ventures, and Richard Sherman, CEO of The David Geffen Company. “I am beyond excited at the prospect of welcoming Lucian and Jason to our Board,” said DreamWorks CEO/director Jeffrey Katzenberg. “They are true superstars in their respective fields. Jason revolutionized how we consume content and Lucian is one of the most innovative forces in the music industry. The addition of their expertise to our already incredibly strong board will help take the company to new heights as we continue to grow our brand.”

The sudden departure of Nickelodeon president of content development Marjorie Cohn this week is as clear a signal as possible that the network is serious about redefining its programming mandate in a bid to return to its ratings reign. A 26-year veteran of the network, New York-based Cohn was responsible for several Nick hits including live-action shows iCarly and Victorious, and oversaw animated hits including Rugrats, SpongeBob and The Penguins of Madagascar. Nickelodeon is not only shifting its programming and distribution to keep pace with the post-millennial generation, but physical production of that programming from New York to Los Angeles, where Russell Hicks has presided since coming aboard last August. In a companywide email, Nickelodeon Group president Cyma Zarghami gave no explanation for Cohn’s departure, saying, “We have focused our attention on serving the first generation of postmillennial viewers with exciting new content, introduced an innovative new brand experience through our app and experienced new momentum in our ratings.” Cohn’s direct reports will now report to Hicks. As part of the restructuring, Alison Dexter, EVP of Nickelodeon Productions, is also exiting the company as well.

PROGRAMMING PICKS

Canadian classic cartoon channel Teletoon Retro is inviting viewers to take a little trip down nostalgia lane with new online cartoon trivia game Toon Feud. The game pits families against each other in rounds of retro toon-based trivia, and marks the network’s first foray into second screen-dom. Beginning April 19, Toon Feud will feature special weekly live programming events every Friday evening from 7-9 p.m. (ET) during the Teletoon Retro Fun Flicks movie; live games and trivia questions will be inspired by the shows and movies currently being broadcast.

Hosted By: Megan Alexander from Inside Edition!

*Coming Soon: Award finalists will be announced mid-April

LICENSING

For those who want to keep their superheroes close by at all times, Performance Designed Products is releasing an exclusive line of iconic Marvel Comic cases for the iPhone 5. Available at Apple Stores, the line features retro designs of such heroes as X-Men, Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, and The Avengers with illustrations from their first appearances in the Marvel universe.

San Fran-based Dimensional Branding Group has appointed two new licensing agents for its still-sizzling game Temple Run. Empire Multimedia Corp. will rep the brand in the Pan China region and Wild Pumpkin in Australia and New Zealand. Temple Run is approaching 400 million game downloads, and Temple Run 2 recently set a record of over 50 million downloads in 13 days.

GAMING

Another day, another winnowing in the games industry. Electronic Arts will close down its Facebook games Madden NFL Superstars 11 & 12 and NHL Superstars on May 14, and its Pet Society, SimCity Social and The Sims Social games on Facebook one month later, on June 14. The company cites declining activity in the games, which it purchased from Playfish Games for $300 million in 2009.

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

Italy’s RAI renewed its commitment to U.K.-based V&S Entertainment’s animated preschool series Everything’s Rosie. The broadcaster will air the second season of Rosie, totaling 52 episodes, plus the series special When You Wish Upon An Oak, on its children’s channel RAI Yoyo.

RESEARCH & TRENDS

If you’re a network that streams your content to young viewers, you’re probably getting some PR out of it. According to new stats from research firm GfK, 42% of consumers “think more highly” of television networks that make shows freely available to viewers via streaming platforms. That’s up from 31% seven years ago, when GfK began conducting its research. Additionally, 27% of respondents who stream or downloaded video say that they “watch a greater number” of shows because of streaming options more than twice as many as in 2006. And 21% of consumers say they spend more time watching TV content, thanks to digital viewing options. Of course, there’s no such thing as a free lunch. The current GfK research says 33% of those surveyed watch less “regular” TV nowadays with streaming options, compared with 24% who say they watch more TV.

MORE KIDS NEWS

Selena Gomez, Bridgit Mendler, Denise Richards, Jason Derulo and Jessica Sanchez are among those confirmed to dole out awards at the Radio Disney Music Awards on April 27. The Los Angeles event also will feature appearances by Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato and Ryan Seacrest.

From small screen to big stage… The Fresh Beat Band, Nickelodeon’s preschool house band and stars of the series of the same name, will hit the road this fall on a 50-city tour including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas and Atlanta. Tickets go on sale April 20, and to fuel the fan frenzy, Nick Jr. will air the band’s first-ever concert special at 7 p.m. April 21. The 30-minute special includes concert and behind-the-scenes footage.

CYNKIDS SPOTLIGHT

A high five to PBS Kids, which has been disseminating information for parents about how to talk to young children about scary news since the tragic bombing in Boston yesterday afternoon, including this golden nugget from none other than Fred Rogers, who said: “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.'” From all of us at CynKids, a heartfelt thanks.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

At least one former Disney Interactive exec has landed in a plum position. The TV Academy has named Marc Wade to the newly created position of executive producer, digital. In this role Wade will oversee digital production of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, including its web site and all apps. Wade previously served four years as Disney Interactive’s director of destination web sites, where he oversaw the highly successful Toy Story 3 web site.
