Good Morning.  It’s Wednesday, April 16, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.  This is an all day travel day for us, heading back home from Italy, so if your emails aren’t answered right away, they will, tonight or tomorrow.  Good to be headed home again!  And as always, if you prefer to watch this morning’s news instead of reading it, click here.

Broadcast Evening News Ratings Wrap-Up: The final results for the week of April 7, 2008:
ABC: 8.03 million total viewers and 2.0/8 A25-54
NBC: 7.92 million total viewers and 1.9/8 A25-54
CBS: 5.56 million total viewers and 1.4/6 A25-54

VH1’s 90-minute season finale of Rock of Love 2 with Bret Michaels on Sunday (9p) delivered a 3.5 rating and 3.9 million viewers among A18-49. The episode also drew in 5 million total viewers.

TV One will air never-before-seen episodes of the action-thriller series Day Break starring Taye Diggs starting this Sunday at 10p. The series began airing on the network last month and it originally aired on ABC with six episodes during the fall of 2006.

The second and final day of the Venice Festival of Media kicked off with a group chat of 8 agency CEOs under the heading of The Agency CEO Hotseat Sessions with such notables as Nick Brien-Universal McCann; Jack Klues-Publicis; Mike Cooper-PHD; Steve King-ZenithOptimedia; Mainardo de Nardis-Aegis Media; Alexander Schmidt-Vogel-Mediacom; Maria Louis Francoli-MPG and Dominic Proctor-Mindshare.  From this the basic message seemed to be integration is key – crush the bureaucracy, break down the specialist silos, all in an effort to attract and retain creative talent. The business has changed – where once we sold products, now we first sell the content and the content sells the product.

Then on the breakout sessions – and again we attended a couple –

  • Increase Your Media Efficiency: Broadcast media and communications alone cannot be relied upon for effectiveness in building brand quality.  New key touch points are being designed to reach the heart of the consumer, while keeping in mind, the brand should keep the consumer at the heart of communication.
  • Playing Around – Advertising Through Gaming: Because the gaming industry is growing so rapidly, panelists were asked what needs to happen to provide an effective marketing platform for advertisers.  The panelists were in agreement that is was mostly educate the advertisers, share case study info, and publishers doing a better job in packaging gaming to engage the medium.

Several new buzz words have also been bandied about in Venice the last couple of days –

Video Snacking – what you do when you watch a short on your mobile
Frenemy – a cross between a friend and an enemy – could be good, could be bad, could be both!
Influencers – users who carry more than a modicum of influence among their peers
Thought Leaders aka Future Thinkers fka Visionaries and more fka smart folks.

This is a travel day – headed home from Venice this morning, arriving this evening back in CT.  If you’re looking for a response to your email today, you may have to wait until Thursday … and finally, tomorrow, a few final words from Venice and our excellent European adventure …
