Plug-and-play digital entertainment multiplex network .2 Network signed its first wave of affiliate deals with Post-Newsweek, Belo and Meredith, reports TVNewsday. .2 Network provides stations with a full slate of content for use in programming a digital subchannel, including broadcast premiere movies, classic TV shows and FCC-compliant kids programming.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
It’s nice to have Stephen Spielberg in your corner. DreamWorks won the battle for the rights to adapt the famed Japanese cyberpunk manga Ghost in the Shell into a 3-D live action thriller after Spielberg took a personal interest in the project, reports Variety. DreamWorks beat out Sony and Universal, who were also chasing the property. “Ghost” is best known to American audiences by the anime adaptations directed by Mamoru Oshii. It also inspired the Wachowski Brothers to create The Matrix trilogy.
 
BET Networks became the latest programmer to distribute its shows through Microsoft’s Xbox Live platform, making College Hill 4, American Gangster, Hell Date and Comic View available for purchase. The pilot of celebrity mixed martial arts competition show Iron Ring is being offered for free this week to promote the offering.
 
H2V Media is teaming with iVillage’s Astrology.com to distribute an original live action and animated documentary series about how Esoteric Traditions mingle with Western Astrology, made specifically for the Blu-ray DVD format. The 12-title HD DVD, each devoted to a different sign, will utilize Blu-ray’s new broadband functionality to link to supplemental material available on Astrology.com. H2V is also working on a mobile component for the release, due out in the fall.
 
Bravo launched a new section of its TelevisionWithoutPity blog called – you guessed it – MoviesWithoutPity.com, turning a snarky eye toward the silver screen.
 
THQ has developed a Dancing with the Stars video game for Windows PCs, online and mobile phones, allowing players to play as one of 26 celebrities or dancers and test some of the show’s most popular dance styles.
 
Time.com launched a mobile web site powered by Crisp Wireless optimized for the iPhone and Wi Fi-enabled iPod touch featuring sliding pages, expandable images and a more robust graphical interface.
 
Jetix Europe is launching an online football tournament this summer, leading up to the Euro 2008 matches and season 2 of its series Galactik Football. Kids from 17 European countries can access the casual gaming portal to compete for points and prizes.

Don’t look now but the multipurpose Google Maps app just transformed itself into a video platform. Local business can now embed YouTube video clips next to their shops, offering a cheap, easy to link-to interface for video tours, product demos or even commercials. (Google offers an embed from S.F.-based cake shop I Dream of Cake as an example.) Geotagged YouTube videos have been available in Google Earth since last year.
 
Blog network Federated Media, whose portfolio includes Boing Boing, Ars Technica and Ask a Ninja, raised an additional $50 million in minority financing from Oak Investment Partners.
 
Upcoming broadband TV platform TidalTV signed an agreement to feature full-length episodes of several National Geographic Channel shows including Taboo, Critical Situation and Wild!, as well as clips from various other shows.
 
Fox Cable’s Fuel TV joined the Next.tv platform, the online entertainment service powered by DAVE Networks that has shipped with all HP notebooks since Jan. 2007.
 
Chumby signed a deal to feature podcasts and multimedia widgets produced by the New York Times on its wireless internet device.

AOL acquired blog content engine Sphere for a reported $25 million. The Sphere Related Content Widget provides contextually relevant blog posts, articles, videos, photos and ads to close to 70,000 publisher sites.

Tremor Media introduced a new video ad platform enabling publishers to overlay video ads from multiple sources through one central console. The Acudeo system aims to offer display ad efficiency to the process of placing video ads on networks of sites, integrating with content management systems and playlists as well as multiple ad servers.
 
Hola Networks
rolled out in-page video ads integrated with its existing network delivery platform that are clickable and support view-based reporting. Hola is part of 24/7 Real Media’s Open AdStream Platform.

Spot Runner
hired former Interpublic Media CEO and MTV President Mark Rosenthal as President of the newly formed Media Platforms division and Vice Chairman. Mark will work to leverage Spot Runner’s technologies to serve ad agencies and media companies, reporting from New York to Nick Grouf, Chairman and CEO.
 
National Geographic Digital Media upped Rob Covey to SVP/Content Development and Design for Online Material, overseeing content and design for NGM.com and the rest of NGDM’s properties. He reports to Betsy Scolnik, President of NGDM. In addition to Covey’s appointment, Dave Smith has been named Director of Web Technology Planning.
 
Move Networks is moving into new offices in Los Angeles and San Mateo, California, Ann Arbor, Michigan and New York City as part of a huge expansion and has hired a pair of new executives. Thomas Morgan, founder and CEO of BlackArrow Corp., joins the company as Chief Strategy Officer. He is charged with developing strategic initiatives focused toward client revenue opportunities. Paul Ptaschne joins as VP/Sales, Latin America, responsible for growing Move Networks’ market share in the region.
 
Philly-based Red Tettemer hired social media expert Annie Heckenberger as Community Trailblazer to help build online buzz for clients.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
One of the problems with the internet is that there’s just too damn much stuff out there to keep up with. One of the reasons blogs have exploded in popularity is because like-minded ones often turn us on to something we might like. Now’s there’s an algorithm-based site that can serve this purpose. Content recommendation engine The Filter, backed by Peter Gabriel’s Real World Group, entered public beta yesterday. It’s designed to point users toward music, TV, movies, entertainment and news they might like by gauging their moods and tastes. The site will monitor new content, keep track of buzz worthy stuff, then recommend titles to users based on past preferences and patterns of consumptions. The Filter initially launched in the UK as a downloadable playlist creator and music discovery application, and has also been supplying recommendations for Nokia, MSN and The Ministry of Sound’s online stores.
