Cynopsis: Kids!
04/14/10

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, April 14, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

DQ Entertainment (DQE) unveils plans for a new 3D CGI animated series The New Adventures of Peter Pan (26×30).  DQE’s Ireland-based production arm, DQE Ireland, is co-producing the HD series with France’s Method Animation and Story Board Animation, under a development deal between the group and broadcaster France Television (France).  The 3D TV series, which will feature some stereoscopic effects, will be produced with a budget of US$13.5 million.

Japanese broadcaster NHK, NHK Educational Corporation (NED) and Al Jazeera Children’s Channel (JCC) are partnering to co-produce the new kid-targeted science experiment-centric series Discover Science (26×14).  Designed to help engage encourage kids to get excited about and actively involved in learning about science and the law of nature, the show will rely on large-scale experiments rather than animated simulations and people talking about concepts on camera.

Facebook unveiled a revamped online Safety Center ( www.facebook.com/help/?safety) as a service to help adults and kids alike to avoid threats online.  Developed with a newly formed advisory board of online safety groups, the site tackles topics such as common sense privacy measures, cyberbulling and online predators offering tools for parents, teachers, teens, kids and law enforcement professionals.

MIPTV

Atlantyca Entertainment and Moonscoop are teaming up again to produce a second season of the animated series, Geronimo Stilton.  Comprised of 26 new episodes, the new season is scheduled to deliver in fall 2011.

Australia’s ABC3 and activeTV enter into a development deal for a new season of 39×30 episodes of the Australian version of the kid’s reality series Prank Patrol, created by Apartment 11 Productions.  Production is slated to begin this year.  Additionally, ABC Commercial has acquired the home entertainment rights, merchandise rights, mobile content rights, online content rights, transport/hotel rights and live event rights for the series in Australian and New Zealand from activeTV and Apartment 11.  The first DVD will be released in May 2010.  activeTV, which produces the Australian version of the series, acquired the Australian rights to Prank Patrol, from MarVista Entertainment, which distributes the series worldwide.  The Australian version of Prank Patrol debuted on digital channel ABC3 in December 2009, and encored on ABC’s main channel ABC1 in March 2010.

FremantleMedia is showcasing the UK family-targeted, primetime game show, Push the Button, a Gallowgate format series that launched this year on ITV1 (UK).  The UK version of the TV series is hosted by Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, best known to UK audiences as Ant and Dec.  Each episode of Push the Button pits two families against one another and the clock in a series of challenges.  Each team starts with a sum of money, which immediately start decreasing as the clock begins. As they complete each task the families must ‘push the button’ to stop the clock and their cash from counting down.

Hit Entertainment debuts the new kid-targeted mixed CG animated/live-action preschool series Monkey See Monkey Do (26×7) at MIPTV this week, and has inked seven deals with international broadcasters. Produced by Smartoonz, Monkey See Monkey Doo is hosted by Monkey, an animated character, and is designed to get kids up and moving and dancing around.  The series has been acquired by: France 5 (France); TVA, TVO and Knowledge (all Canada); Al-Jazeera Kids (Middle East); Minimax (Eastern Europe) and Disney Latam (Latin America). A US broadcaster deal will be completed soon.

Canada-based kelencontent is debuting two new kid’s series at MIPTV 2010:

  • Red Caps (26×30) – a 2D animated series aimed at K6-11, follows Santa’s special year-long team of helpers that have special powers to help kids around the world stand up for their rights and take responsibility for the world.  The series will also feature a book series, online community and games, a 3D feature film, The Magic Crystal, which will be available from September 2010.  Red Caps is a co-production between Epidem Zot (Finland) and Cartoon One Italy).  The series has been pre-sold to RTL2 Germany, Hungary, Finland, Turkey, Middle East and Baltic territories.
  • Lotza (52×30) – the mixed animation and live-action preschool series is virtually non-verbal and uses music to help kids develop cognitive skills and prepare them for school.  kelencontent holds the worldwide right.

UK-based Studio Liddell partners with Fun Crew to launch Spooky Skaters, a 3D animated multi-platform project (TV, online, gaming), which it is showcasing this week at MIPTV.  Targeted to K6-11, Spooky Skaters is an action/adventure series that revolves around the adventures of five free style skaters, now dead, that use their skills for good and to solve paranormal-themed mysteries.  The series is based on an original Fun Crew idea that was featured in D.C. Thomson’s Dandy Xtreme magazine and two kid’s books.  They will also develop iPhone apps and Nintendo Wii games for the property.

Marathon Media and Ouat Entertainment partner to launch the co-published Totally Spies Fashion Agents ( www.fashionagents.com/en/), the first Role Play Game (RPG) based on the Totally Spies animated TV series, on Facebook.  A Beta version in French and English will be published online April 20, with new missions and functions added every week.  The Totally Spies game invites players to create their own avatar and set out on missions to help save the world and play mini-games, and also acquire costumes and objects to decorate their apartments.  In the Facebook game, players can share their apartment with friends just like the friends in the series.  Additionally, players can buy objects/items via micro-transactions that allow them to move through the game quicker, though they aren’t mandatory to progress in the game.

Correction: When Pocoyo debuts on Nick Jr. US it will mark the preschool show’s US English-language premiere.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Boomerang honors Earth Day 2010 with a Captain Planet and the Planeteers 12-hour marathon, Saturday, April 17, 8a-8p, kicking off with the two-part episode Summit to Save Earth.  Based on an idea by Ted Turner, the animated series made its debut in 1990.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Jumbo Games, a European manufacturer of kid’s puzzles and games, inks a two-year extension for its license deal for preschool series Peppa Pig.  Among Jumbo Games’ new products based on the property this year include the Peppa Pig Muddy Puddles game, a wide range of puzzles, including giant floor puzzles, a bumper pack of six puzzles in one, dominoes and giant snakes and ladders.

Chapman Entertainment signs a deal with Ethos Housewares as a new licensee for Fifi and the Flowertots and Roary the Racing Car ceramics.  Targeted to kids, the product lines will feature mugs, cookie jars, money boxes and ceramic breakfast sets. Additionally, the Fifi and the Flowertots line will include a baking set.  Products based on both preschool properties are expected to launch later this year.  Ethos Housewares is owned by PMS International.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

The Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media names Madeline Di Nonno as Executive Director.  In her new position, Di Nonno will head up the organization’s See Jane program, a non-profit group focused on research and advocacy to educate content creators on gender representation issues and the impact on kids 11 and younger.  First up, Di Nonno will oversee the release of two new research studies and will also head the organization’s 2010 conference.  Most recently, Di Nonno was President and CEO, On the Scene Productions.  She previously served as SVP/Worldwide Marketing, Anchor Bay Entertainment/Starz Media, and prior to that was head/Marketing, Echo Bridge Entertainment and EVP and GM, Nielsen EDI.
