Cynopsis: DIGITAL
04/14/10

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, April 14, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing, reporting from NAB in Las Vegas.

During his NAB keynote on Tuesday morning, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski warned broadcasters of the impending shortage of mobile broadband capacity but tried to assuage fears of a government takeover of broadcasters’ spectrum by emphasizing that the process will be entirely voluntary. He also suggested that the FCC’s reclamation/auction plan would only require a “relatively small number” of stations to participate in order to work. The idea will be to encourage struggling stations in urban markets to raise money by auctioning off the spectrum they currently own (as on eBay, they can set a minimum bid) then teaming up with other smaller players to broadcast from a smaller footprint together. The broadcasting community remains skeptical to the plan. “I don’t think broadcasters are willing to give up any spectrum – under our FCC licenses we think we have an obligation to serve our local communities (by utilizing that spectrum to launch mobile DTV services of our own),” Raycom Media CEO Paul McTear told Cynopsis Digital.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Proving the impact of social networking across all content categories, CNN unveiled a complete redesign coming this spring that will integrate Facebook Connect throughout the entire site to allow users to share content and comments seamlessly between the two sites. CNN will also begin to rollout other new features throughout the year including an Entertainment vertical edited by OK! Magazine’s Katie Caperon and a blog network touching on food, religion, travel, etc.

Good news for (saddened) Ugly Betty fans: Ben Silverman’s Electus production studio, a division of Barry Diller’s IAC/InterActive Corp., is developing an interactive novella-flavored series for MTV starring America Ferrera. Call it Romeo and Juliet meets KateModern. The bilingual “Pedro & Maria,” will combine both on air and online elements allowing audiences to affect the direction of the storyline via online, mobile and social networking participation. P&G has signed on to develop interactive creative around the show.

Multiplatform Spanish language broadcaster V-me is leveraging online video platform Kyte to offer a range of video services around the brand including a new WAP site and a Spanish iPad video app. The newly retooled Vme.com will incorporate live interactive video events, UGC, sharing tools and enhanced social networking integration.

Hearst Magazines relaunched its Popular Mechanics’ site with new step-by-step project guides designed to walk Do-it-yourselfers through major projects. The site is built upon a new customizable HMDM template marrying content with cross-selling ad opportunities that will be rolled out to other Hearst sites.

The original web-based Blackberry All-Access Pre Game Show premiers today on NHL.com, the first day of the NHL Playoffs. The show, which will also be syndicated via YouTube, Facebook and other sports and hockey sites, will feature video posts from onsite correspondents using the BlackBerry Messenger platform.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Facebook
unveiled a revamped online Safety Center as a service to help adults and kids alike to avoid threats online. Developed with a newly formed advisory board of online safety groups, the site tackles topics such as common sense privacy measures, cyberbulling and online predators offering tools for parents, teachers, teens, kids and law enforcement professionals.

Starling
is a new social TV platform unveiled at MIP TV yesterday that allows viewers to chat, play along and interact with live TV shows via the web, mobile and tablet devices. The service, being pitched to producers, integrates with popular social networking services and categorizes and prioritizes user comments by allowing viewers to actually rate them to push valuable comments to the top, on a global basis. The company is offering programmers such as FremantleMedia the to opportunity to build custom apps for the platform and is working with WPP’s JWT on an ad solution.

Jake & Amir from CollegeHumor.com, nominees in the humor category, are helping to spread the word about this year’s 1th annual Webby Award Nominees in the areas of websites, interactive advertising, online video and mobile. NYTimes.com led all content sites with 15 nominations, followed by BBC (9), CollegeHumor(6) and The Onion (6). Fans have until April 29 to cast their votes for the People’s Choice component of the awards.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Microblogging service Twitter took a step towards quelling the ‘when are you going to get a business model?’ question yesterday, introducing ads in the form of Google-style “Promoted Tweets” to appear among search results. The ads are based on keywords, with Twitter charging clients per thousand impressions. Best Buy, Bravo, Starbucks and Virgin America are among 10 initial advertisers to test the service.

Mobile content firm InMobi announced it is rolling out advanced analytics and reporting capabilities later this month. The new functionality will allows publishers to view performance by country, manufacturer and handset to determine what platform or what territory ads are most effective.

Interactive ad solution TagMan inked a deal with Subaru to manage and track online marketing campaigns across its U.S.-based site. TagMan acts as a single, universal tag and interface enabling advertisers to track tags and pixels on their own sites to determine where the most effective lead generation is coming from, across natural search, paid search, affiliates, display, email or site analytics.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

CTB Networks is testing an innovative technology along the I-5 corridor in Oregon that allows broadcasters to help tackle the mobile bandwidth crunch by offering a hybrid unicast and multicast solution to mobile handsets. The software system basically “cellularizes” mobile content delivery by banding together low power towers and prioritizing on demand video that is most often requested by consumers. Tall, high-power tower architecture is replaced with a low power, short range cellular scheme to enable two-way mobile services to be deployed over a single network.

Cash-strapped smartphone maker Palm is seeking several strategic options including selling the company to an interested buyer, per the WSJ.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Cisco’s latest Flip Video phone is the SlideHD model, featuring a slide-open, HDMI widescreen viewing screen that makes playback much more practical. The $279 model ships with the FlipShare content sharing software suite and comes with 16GB of storage capable of recording up to 4 hours of HD video.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Joint cable interactivity venture Canoe Ventures has formed an 11-member advisory board made of marketers, programmers and other industry executives to help forward its objectives. Bellwether Digital Bridge CEO and former board director of the Ad Council Jim Garrity was named Chairman of the Canoe Ventures Advisory Board with Canoe Ventures CMO Vicki Lins serving as Vice Chairman.

InMobi hired former comScore and Topspin executive James Lamberti to lead Global Research and Marketing.

GolTV tapped Account Executive Gisella Ripp to open a new sales office in New York City, charged with driving ad sales in the Northeast Region for GolTV’s linear TV network, website and GolTV Movil properties. Gisella reports to Miami-based Ivan Perez.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Local media interactive services provider Inergize Digital has put together a new turnkey local advertising product that allows stations to compete with the old world yellow pages business in their markets – a business that is declining at 6% a year but that is still worth $13.5 billion on the print side alone. Inergize’s “seek it local” suite, currently in 64 markets, ( here‘s the ABC affiliate in Salt Lake’s version) is a customizable online search directory that allows local businesses to maintain an interactive presence. For a one-time $100 fee they get their name, address, phone number inserted into the directory searchable by keyword. If they pay $1,200 annually they get a banner presence, couponing, more detailed listing info, user commenting and video; Inergize stations are contracting with 3rd party videographers to shoot quick video spots for a fraction of what it costs to shoot a TV commercial. Inergize Digital SVP and GM Jason Gould sees the service as a local-based alternative to Yelp that may ultimately win over advertisers by allowing stations to, if not stave off negative reviews then at least limit their damage. Broadcasters are encouraged to increase engagement on the site by holding “Best of” user generated competitions in multiple categories they can promote on their air. Inergize is also launching a seek it local mobile component for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad in mid-May (and later for Android) that replicates the experience with basic geolocation capabilities. Stations have their work cut out for them competing with pure play location-based services like foursquare but this is a step in the right direction.
