Cynopsis: DIGITAL
4/11/07
Good Morning, it’s Wednesday, April 11, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Meredith launched better.tv, a broadband network organized around topic-based channels built to utilize content from the company’s portfolio of magazines, TV stations, books and websites. The channels focus on health, home, garden, fashion and family, with videos varying from 2 to 30 minutes in length. Some content, such as the 5-minute Better Today, is updated daily. Links to other Meredith sites including BetterHomesandGardens.com – relaunching this month to add more interactive features – scroll along the bottom. The site is powered by Brightcove.
Warner Music Group signed an agreement to provide Joost with a number of video channels featuring WMG artists and music-based content. The videos, including music videos, interviews and behind-the-scene footage, will be organized by genre, label and artist-based channels.
A new website called OurStage emerged from beta yesterday, purporting to have a more democratic judging system that allows fans to pick the best music, film and video content. A “peer relative ranking” insures each piece of content is judged only against like works, according to the site. At the end of each month, the top ten from each channel go head-to-head in an SMS vote-off. The contestant who receives the most votes gets a cash award and a chance to compete for the grand prize of $5,000.
MarthaStewart.com relaunched with improved navigation and search, a more streamlined user interface and much more video content–700 altogether covering all 15 years of her TV career. Now the site is organized by consumer interest rather than Omnimedia brand. New features include SoMartha, which allows users to interact by submitting favorite Martha moments or rate those submitted by others. The updates are the first step of a complete overhaul, expected to be completed this fall. Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia has tripled its digital team from 20 to 60 employees since late 2005, when the revamp began.
Video sharing site Break.com signed a first-look programming deal with Endemol USA to produce original content for the male-targeted site. Scheduled to premiere this summer is Record Breakers, featuring a host who sets comedic records then challenges contestants to break the record for a prize. Viewers are asked to submit videos of themselves on Break.com performing the tasks.
MySpace launched a new service called TrailerPark, a movie trailer site that allows users to view and embed trailers on their MySpace page or forward them to friends. Each movie includes its requisite pack of friends and comments, adding a social networking aspect sites like Apple, Yahoo, iKlipz and RottenTomatoes.com lack.
Virgin is the next company betting game consoles will become the defacto entertainment portal in the home. The Virgin Radio player can now be launched on Wii and PlayStation 3 web browsers. Users can download the player to watch music videos, concert footage, buy CDs and purchase tickets through the Virgin Radio Ticket store.
NFL Network is offering cable affiliates 12 hours of exclusive VOD coverage of the NFL Draft, to be held April 13 and 14. Comcast, Cox, Insight, Bresnan and Verizon have agreed to carry the content, which includes 5-minute profiles of the top 100 prospects.
Calling all college students! Cyn opsis Weekender College Edition sponsored by Greek, A New ABC Family Original Series coming in July, is coming back on April 26, 2007, and if your essay on television is one of the four published, you’ll be paid $350! We’re looking for 350 word editorials on the subject of television from current college students all around the world. The four most insightful, original, humorous and/or well-written pieces will be included in this special College Edition of Weekender , and only those four will be paid $350. College Professors, moms and dads – encourage your students to participate! All entries should be emailed no later than midnight on Friday, April 20th to me at [email protected], SUBJECT: Weekender College Edition. Students – be sure to include your name, age, college, college year, and major (if you know it), and how you can be contacted. Good luck!
Adobe announced its Apollo platform is now available for web developers. This software is expected to spur rapid innovation in web design, taking Flash, HTML and javascript outside of the confines of the web browser and enabling rich-media applications to be built on the desktop. Top designers have been playing with a demo of the products since it was released in beta format weeks ago. For instance social music site Finetune has already launched an Apollo-based music player that can access customized playlists from the desktop.
FCC Chairman Kevin Martin is circulating a plan that would require cable operators to carry both analog and digital feeds from TV stations from early 2009. The plan includes a caveat allowing operators to drop the analog format if all their subscribers had tuners required to receive local DTV signals. As it stands now, digital stations that elect must-carry after February 17, 2009 won’t be seen in cable homes without digital tuners.
Interactive video software company Ensequence raised $40 million in a third-round of private funding. Ensequence works with MSOs, cable networks and online services such as MLB.com to add interactive features to video. For instance, a recent project with Nickelodeon added play-along interactive games and VOD content for Dora the Explorer.
SlingBox is working on an application to enable content streamed to an Apple TV be transmitted to a mobile phone. SlingPlayer software supports Windows Mobile, Palm and Symbian mobile platforms. No word whether or not Apple’s iPhone, scheduled to be shipped in June, will offer this capability.
Google is still on Viacom’s you-know-what list. Yahoo signed a deal to be exclusive provider of search ads for MTV.com, Nickelodeon.com, ComedyCentral.com and thirty other Viacom sites. Yahoo is battling with Google over the lucrative search ad market, which still accounts for a lion’s share of ad revenue on the net. Yahoo launched its new Panama search marketing system in February, which determines ad placement based on an assessment of quality including click-through rates rather than just price alone.
Several companies are pushing to offer advertisers online ad solutions that go beyond video pre-rolls, according to Ad Age. Deep Focus launched a campaign for Dewars last week to integrate the brand within Onion News Network videos outside of pre-roll spots. Videoegg and VideoClix place bugs along the bottom of the video, enticing viewers to click for more advertiser content. ScanScout also hopes to sell contextual advertising around the body of content. Ripe TV runs brief pre-rolls with graphical overlays that form a frame around or below the main video.
DirecTV could be the next distributor to test Google‘s automated TV ad system, according to the blog VentureBeat.
Nielsen/Net Ratings figures for Network Web Site Traffic in February:
Network Site Unique Visitors
- ABC.com 8,977,000
- NBC.com 8,018,000
- CBS.com 5,541,000
- Fox.com 2,258,000
One quarter of likely voters say the internet is the best place to research candidates positions and general election issues, according to a new survey by Burst, beating out TV (21.3%), newspapers (17.3%), radio (6.9%) and magazines (4.4%). Over half of likely voters said they would watch a video clip on a candidate’s website that featured his or her position on the issues.
Craig Gugel was appointed President of Telmar Group. He will be charged with leading the transition of the media planning company’s evolution in an increasingly digital environment. Craig and Harry Appel, promoted to Group Vice Chairman and Chief Globalization Officer, will report directly to Chairman Stan Federman.
WCBS New York named Brett Prescott as Director of Digital Sales, a newly created position. He will report to station GM Peter Dunn and be charged with developing online marketing campaigns from interactive agencies.
Web-based media bidding tool creator Enversa promoted Naomi Bradford to Vice President, Business Development. She will oversee Enversa’s sales outreach to advertisers and agencies.

In celebration of its 60th Anniversary, the Cannes Film Festival launched an excellent site to look back at past festivals, films and film aficionados. Some of the innovative multimedia features include an interactive fresco with video clips and photos listed by year that allows users to drill down and read about the historical and political context each festival took place in. Some features such as “the movie buff who knew too much” quiz require registration.

A new website will be featured here everyday for you to check out. Some are TV-centric, some creative, some just plain strange. Email me your suggestions at [email protected] and if I include the site you mention, your name, company and city will be credited. Only one mention per calendar week, to make it fair.
