The votes are in. YouTube sensation Kid President, aka 10-year-old Robby Novak, is getting his own series on Hub Network in June. The announcement was made by Kid President himself on, where else, his YouTube channel (http://youtu.be/M8PK61vBXMc). Kid President: Declaration of Awesome will feature the inspirational young diplomat promoting positivity among kids and adults in a similar docu-variety style as his YouTube channel, which has featured everyone from President Obama to Steve Carell to Beyonce. The series is exec-produced by actor Rainn Wilson (The Office) and Novak’s brother-in-law, show’s creator Brad Montague. SoulPancake will produce. Novak draws a global following of 75 million, which started building after his moving video, “A Pep Talk from Kid President to You,” went viral. How did Hub manage to seal the deal? Aside from appreciating the co-viewing possibilities, “the network sent us an industrial-sized freezer full of corndogs. And we will do just about anything for corndogs,” says Wilson.

Fablevision Studios is opening the book on original production with the hiring of Tone Thyne as VP of creative. Thyne–whose credits include Little Airplane’s The Wonder Pets! for Nick Jr., Go Baby! for Disney Junior, and Laurie Berkner’s co-creation Sing It, Laurie! for Sprout–will spearhead development of original animated properties for TV and digital platforms (we can’t help but wonder whether their titles will all have exclamation points!). The studio has developed interactive experiences primarily based on licensed content for partners including PBS, Reading Is Fundamental, Nick Jr. and Smithsonian. CynKids caught up with Thyne and Fablevision president Gary Goldberger.
What kind of programming can we expect:
Thyne: We specialize in shows that come from the heart. And we’ll be making shows that parents and guardians want to watch, too. One of the most important things when creating content for kids is, don’t gear it to kids. Make something adults would want to want to watch whether we have a kid with us or not. The design, story, music–none of it should feel made specifically for kids, but of course it should appeal to kids.
How do you anticipate the new content will be distributed?
Goldberger: TV doesn’t mean what it meant a couple years ago. With digital and television content melding together now, there are so many new platforms that are hungry for new IP. In some cases it means starting in short-form. There’s a big trend now to find out what the users want, and there’s a lot of opportunity to put content out there on a platform and see what kind of reaction gets before a broadcaster commits to something long form.
Awesome-er: AwesomenessTV, the multichannel YouTube outfit acquired last year by DreamWorks Animation, is making an acquisition of its own. The MCN is buying Big Frame, another YouTube network with 300-plus channels, for $15 million. Big draws at Big Frame include Tyler Oakley and Joe Penna, aka MysteryGuitarMan. Combined, the programmers will reach 80 million subscribers and generate close to 1 billion views a month, says Awesomeness.
Hulu Kids just launched BRB Internacional’s animated series Canimals, which joins other titles from the BRB factory including Bernard, Suckers and Angus&Cheryl that are available on the streaming service. Co-produced by Aardman, VoozClub and Screen 21, the series of 7-minute eps combines animation and live-action images to tell the adventures of curious little characters in the shape of tin cans.
Oznoz, which provides content for bilingual kids online at Oznoz.com and via the Oznoz app, now has a HIT on its hands. A new deal with HIT Entertainment brings a library of preschool content including Thomas & Friends, Angelina Ballerina, Barney & Friends, Bob the Builder, Kipper and Rubbadubbers to kids in the U.S. and Canada in Mandarin, Arabic, Hindi, German, Russian and Korean languages. The deal marks the first time HIT’s content library will be available in these languages in North America.
Francetv Distribution will be the global distribution partner for all new animation from N O R M AA L Animation and France Televisions based on the Peanuts comic strip and characters by Charles M. Schulz. The animated series is part of Peanuts Worldwide’s content-building strategy that includes a new animated feature film from Twentieth Century Fox and Blue Sky Studios, set for global release in fall 2015. N O R M AA L is currently in production on the new animation. The series is currently packaged as 500 90-second shorts and 104 7-minutes blocks ,and marks the first ever animated interpretations of the Peanuts comic strips in short form. They’ll be available for global distribution in this fall.

What parent doesn’t need help helping their young children manage screen time? Kids media company yummico today releases the first title its preschool series The Adventures of Ash & Ollie, an interactive ebook called ScreenTime. Written by Caroline Baron and illustrated by Traci Paige Johnson, the title features mischievous brothers Ash and Ollie as they navigate their parents’ rules about when, and how long, to play games on dad’s phone. ScreenTime is produced in collaboration with Fingerprint and playable on iOS devices, the Fingerprint Play mobile network and soon to launch on Android and Google Play.
Winx Club is expanding its membership with the release of a new music-infused app by Rainbow. Winx Club: Rocks the World, developed by Budge Studios, lets fans join the Winx Club on their magical music tour across all the worlds of the Magic Dimension. Players can unlock rewards to make tour posters featuring different backgrounds, stickers, and paint colors.
On the heels of its recently released Rio app, Cupcake Digital and Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products today debut an app to whet appetites for the upcoming Rio 2. The official movie app includes an interactive story that takes kids into Blu and Jewel’s Amazonian family adventure, plus three interactive games and coloring pages featuring favorite characters from the film, which hits theaters on April 11.
To each his own… A collection of Garfield-branded men’s nightwear is set to hit the shelves courtesy of Poeticgem. Says Poeticgem’s Elliot Matthews, “our design team have already started work on what promises to be a funny and stylish nightwear range.” Poeticgem is represented in the UK by Bulldog Licensing.
CBeebies has picked up series Hettie Makebelieve, from producer Tim Goodchild of 1973 Films. The stop frame animation series is about a collection of toys who come to life and create amazing new worlds of adventure. Hettie will be produced in the U.K. by renowned stop motion animators Mackinnon and Saunders, whose work has contributed to Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox, Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride and Frankenweenie as well as TV series such as Bob the Builder and Postman Pat.
German toy distribution company iToy is under new ownership by Ralph Thielert, and will be serving as a full-service distributor providing warehousing, invoicing and trade marketing services to German-speaking territories. Thielert previously served as head of merchandising and home entertainment at Studio 100 Media GmbH.
