Cynopsis: Kids!


Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 7, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Stardoll, the teen fashion/celebrity/entertainment-centric virtual world and social gaming site, partners with Random House Children’s Books (RHCB) to launch Mortal Kiss ( www.stardoll.com/en/mortalkiss ), an interactive virtual story.  A paranormal mystery, Mortal Kiss is created in collaboration by writers and editors at RHCB and artists and programmers at Stardoll and will be serialized over eight weeks, beginning this week.  The story will offer 3-5 minutes of reading content daily in an interactive book and map with weekly cliffhangers for Stardoll members, who can also take part in shaping the story and its outcome.  The four primary characters of the story will have character Stardolls.  Additionally, the Mortal Kiss effort will also feature writing contests focused on themes from the book.


Comedian/actor/writer/producer James Corden signs on as the narrator of Chapman Entertainment‘s new preschool-aimed CGI animated series Little Charley Bear, which is set to launch on CBeebies in early 2011.  Pinewood-based Annix Studios is animated the series. Corden most recently had a hit with the World Cup single, Shout for England, and is set to star in director Paul W.S. Anderson’s new Summit Entertainment feature film The Three Musketeers 3D (April 15, 2011).  Licensees already on board for Little Charley Bear include: HIT Entertainment (home entertainment partner and TV distributor); Vivid Imaginations (master toy partner); Zap (bedding); Worlds Apart (home decor); Blues Clothing Limited (outwear) and Aykroyds/TDP Licensing (nightwear/underwear) and Rainbow (costume character).

Cake Entertainment is appointed as the worldwide distributor for the fourth installment of Fresh TV‘s Total Drama franchise, Total Drama Reloaded.  Cake’s newest deals for the Total Drama include those with Cartoon Network Latin America (Total Drama World Tour), Cartoon Network Asia (Total Drama Island, Action and World Tour) and Cartoon Network EMEA, excluding the UK (Total Drama World Tour).

Elsewhere, Cake Entertainment is set to attend MipJunior in Cannes next month where it will showcase a range of kid-targeted programming including:

  • Poppy Cat (52×11) – from Coolabi Productions and King Rollo for Nick Jr. US, the imagination-centric animated preschool series is based on the Poppy Cat books by Lara Jones.
  • Oscar’s Oasis (78×7) – from Tuba Entertainment, TeamTO and Cake, the kid/tween-targeted animated series follows the adventures of a curious and energetic lizard, and his misfit friends as they overcome daily challenges in the desert.
  • Angelo Rules (78×8) – The animated series follows 12-year-old Angelo as he makes his way through middle school and family life.  Targeted to K6-11, the series is from TeamTO and Cake.
  • Dead Gorgeous (26×22) – the kid/tween live-action series follows the humorous adventures of three teen sisters, who happen to be 19th century ghosts trying to make it as regular teens living in the 21st century.
  • Eliot Kid 2 (104×13) – 52 new episodes of the 2D animated character Eliot Kid making his way through life from a unique perspective and imagination.  Aimed at K6-9, the series is from Safari de Ville/Samka Productions.

Wubbzy, of Nick Jr.‘s Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!, will star in a cross-promotional campaign November 2010 – February 2011 featuring the new Wubbzy DVD, Fly Us to the Moon (releasing November 16) from Starz Media’s Anchor Bay Entertainment, and Uncle Matt’s Organic juices and fruits.  Anchor Bay and Uncle Matt’s Organic are teaming to offer consumers nationwide with a $3 mail-in rebate when they purchase a 59-oz. container of Uncle Matt’s orange juice or fresh produce bag and any Wubbzy DVD.  The promotional offer, including Fly Us to the moon DVD art, will be featured on 500,000+ Uncle Matt’s products and with coupons available via a range of mommy bloggers.  Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! is produced by Bolder Media, in association with Starz Media’s Film Roman Animation Studio.

Fluid World inks a deal for Sanrio’s Hello Kitty first album in the UK with Hed Kandi.  Under the deal the limited edition UK album, Hed Kandi and Hello Kitty presents Nu Disco, will launch in the UK in October, at retail on October 25 and available for pre-order at iTunes on October 24.  The two disc album features 24 tracks from various artists and will be exported to territories outside the UK.  Sanrio is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Portfolio Entertainment appoints Louis Fournier to the newly created position of VP/Sales and Acquisitions.  An industry veteran, Fournier will set the multiplatform sales direction Portfolio International, Portfolio’s distribution arm, while also expanding its acquired international distribution rights for fact-based and lifestyle programming.  He will also work with Portfolio co-founders and co-CEOs Joy Rosen and Lisa Olfman to grow the company.  Fournier was most recently VP/Business Development with Tribal Nova.  He was previously President, Galakids, he was an executive with Cinar, and was President/Youth and Animation Unit, TVA International.

Nina Koch joins Nelvana Enterprises as Sales Representative for Easter Europe and Germany.  She will be based in Munich.  Koch takes over for J.J. Breijinck, who will remain with the company through the end of the month to assist with the transition.  Most recently, Koch toiled for Tele Munchen Gruppe in Munich.


Disney Channel‘s premiere of Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam on Friday, September 3, 2010 (8-10p) drew 8 million Total Viewers, making it the year’s top cable TV movie. Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam also becomes the top Labor Day weekend telecast ever among K6-11 (3.1 million) and Tweens 9-14 (3.2 million).  The TV movie was also top scripted telecast in almost six months in Total Viewers (CBS’ Numbers 8.4 million, 3/12/10) and the top Friday telecast among Tweens 9-14 since Disney Channel’s debut of Wizards of Waverly Place The Movie (8//28/09).  Camp Rock 2 is a sequel to Camp Rock, which premiered on the network on June 20, 2008, earning 8.9 million Total Viewers, and 3.4 million among Tweens 9-14.
