Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 6, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Following last week’s resignation of Chorion‘s top two board members, Chairman Lord Waheed Alli and Deputy Chairman William Astor, after their failed efforts to renegotiate the entertainment rights company’s debt (an estimated $114 million), DC Advisory Partners has been appointed to manage the sale of all of its assets, per Bloomberg.  Acquired by 3i Group in 2006 for approximately $181 million, London-based Chorion is the rights holder for a range of properties including its newest property Octonauts, as well as classic ones such as Beatrix Potter, Enid Blyton’s properties (e.g. Noddy, Famous Five), Mr. Men, Paddington Bear, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Agatha Christie, Georges Simenon, and Raymond Chandler, among others.  Suitors for the assets, at least the kid-targeted ones, churning out of the rumor mill include Disney Entertainment One, Hasbro, and Viacom.

MORE KIDS STUFF

SLR Productions‘ new animated preschool series Guess How Much I Love You – The Adventures of Little Nutbrown Hare (52×11) will premiere in Canada on TVO and Knowledge Network on Saturday, September 2011 at 8a, then airing Saturdays and Sundays.  The new series is based on the classic Guess How Much I Love You picture book written by Sam McBratney, illustrated by Anita Jeram and published by Walker Books.  A co-production between Singapore-based Scrawl Studios, German broadcaster KI.KA and ARD’s HR (Hessischer Rundfunk), Guess How Much I Love You  The Adventures of Little Nutbrown Hare is also slated to broadcast in Australia, Germany, Finland and Sweden, and on Disney Junior in the US.  CCI Entertainment holds the global distribution and licensing rights for the series in Latin America, Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

Your Family Entertainment (YFE) enters into a license deal with Zattoo, subscription-based Swiss Live-WebTV service in Europe, under which the kid/family-targeted pay your family channel will available via Zattoo’s new Pay TV package.  Launched in 2006 in Switzerland, Zattoo is available in also available in Germany, Denmark, the UK, France, and Spain, boasting 8+ million registered users.

Batman: The Animated Series joins The Hub‘s programming lineup today at 5p.  Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, Batman: The Animated Series will air regularly on the networks Mondays-Thursdays at 5p.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Little Airplane Productions inks exclusive deals for its short-form preschool series Small Potatoes for a new original music album on iTunes and a book series from Penguin Young Readers Group.  Additionally, the Small Potatoes series debuts on the Disney Junior programming block on Disney Channel in the US today.  The iTunes Small Potatoes album is available for pre-sales beginning today, with the album set to go on sale September 13.  The new 10-book Small Potatoes series will be published by Penguin Young Readers Group’s Grosset & Dunlap imprint from early 2013.  The song Small Potatoes’ Mash-Up is also available for download during the week of September 13.  A Small Potatoes’ Imagination video is available for free with purchase of the album or can be purchased separately.  The album is also available at iTunes stores in the UK/EU, Canada, Japan and Mexico.  Furthermore, the Australian Broadcasting Company (ABC) is releasing a Small Potatoes DVD and CD in October.

Activision Publishing appoints Nickelodeon as its pan-European marketing partner to promote Activision’s new family-targeted Skylanders Spyro’s Adventures in territories across Europe this fall.  Together Nickelodeon and Activision will launch a integrated marketing initiative with on-air and digital promotions and a series of co-branded live events, where kids/families can trial the game and participate in various activities including a stage show with Nick hosts and, of course, the Slime truck.  The Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure tour will makes its way to UK, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Sweden and Spain this fall.

IDW Publishing and Hasbro further their partnership with news of a new comic book series based on Wizards of the Coast‘s, a unit of Hasbro, Magic: The Gathering trading card game (TCG).  IDW working in collaboration with Wizards of the Coast is set to launch the new comic series Magic: The Gathering this fall with an initial four-issue miniseries.  The new comics will also offer exclusive alternate-art cards for the Magic: The Gathering TCG will feature new, available solely via select issues of the IDW comics.  Additionally, each of the comic books will be collected at intervals and published as graphic novels.  The Magic: The Gathering comic series is penned by noted author/game designer Matt Forbeck (The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying Game, Amortals, The Marvel Encyclopedia), with art by newcomer Martin Coccolo.  Previously, IDW Publishing has released comic books based on Hasbro properties including Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Dungeons & Dragons.

LA-based memBrain Licensing is tapped to represent the Gamago ( www.gamago.com ), a popular 10-year-old design brand and giftware company, for global licensing and merchandising.  The deal will see memBrain help expand Gamago’s existing business with a broader range of products in categories including apparel, accessories, publishing and toys among others, while also bolstering its presence in boutiques, specialty and department stores.  Gamago will continue manufacturing its gift and home products, as well as maintaining its wholesale and ecommerce business.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

BBC Worldwide appoints Joerg Backmaier to its new regional position of EVP/EMEA.  Set to join the company in November, Backmaier will be responsible for BBC Worldwide’s strategic development in EMEA (excluding the UK) and delivering new brands, products and services initiatives to drive revenue growth across the region.   He will report to Paul Dempsey, MD/Consumer Products and MED responsible for EMEA on BBC Worldwide’s Executive Committee.  Most recently, Backmaier was SVP and GM for the Americas, Endemol Worldwide Brands.  He has also toiled for Endemol USA and ZDF Enterprises.  Fred Medina was recently named new regional position of EVP/Latin America.  Similar roles are being created for Asia, in addition to existing positions for North America and for Australasia.

Hasbro Studios bolsters its international sales team with the appointment of Nina Scales as Sr. Sales Director/International Distribution.  Based in London, Scales will be key in Hasbro Studios’ programming franchise distribution worldwide, with a focus on Europe, the Middle East and Africa.  She will report to Finn Arnesen, VP/International Distribution and Development.  Most recently, Scales was Head of Sales and Marketing for the international distribution arm of Tinopolis-owned producer Sunset+Vine.  Previously she was Sales Manager, Television Corporation International and Production Manger, Imagicians Television.  Look for Nina at Mipcom this October, where she’ll showcase new shows including the animated/adventure series Blythe Loves the Littlest Pet Shop.

Pixcom Productions, a Montreal-based indie production company, names Natalie Dumoulin as Director/International Youth Development.  Pixcom’s youth division, which is headed by Therese Pinho, will focus its efforts on original concepts and co-productions of preschool and family live-action and animated properties.  Most recently, Dumoulin served as Producer of the animated series Arthur.  She previously toiled as Head of Development, Galakids and Executive Producer of Caillou and Gerald McBoingBoing.

Pattni Imaginations, a UK-based action figure company, names Michael Narayan as Marketing Manager.  Narayan will take a key role in promoting the launch later this year of Pattni’s new Match Stars ( www.match-stars.co.uk ) line of football (soccer) poseable action figures, which also feature spring-loaded kicking action.  Narayan previously held a senior position with software provider i-nexus.  Additionally, Pattni Imaginations recently inked a deal with Rocket Licensing under which it will produce a new movable action figure based on Rocky ‘The Italian Stallion’ Balboa.
