09/06/05

Good morning.  It’s Tuesday, September 6, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

* GOOD STUFF *The one-hour multi-network telethon titled Shelter from the Storm:  A Concert for the Gulf Coast is scheduled for this Friday at 8p, and will air in roadblock form across ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, WB, UPN and PBS.  The special will be exec prod by Joel Gallen, who also produced the America: A Tribute to Heroes following the 9/11 attack. The special will air live in the Eastern and Central time zones from locations in both NY and LA; and be on a tape delay in the Mountain and Pacific time zones. The special will also be made available to cable networks, radio stations and broadband internet providers.  Means and method for donation, as well as additional information regarding those taking part in the special, will be announced at a later date.

Later on today, you will receive a special edition of Cynopsis, dedicated entirely to the relief fund efforts of Hurricane Katrina. The issue is designed to provide you with a wide variety of organizations accepting donations, both national and local, and what different companies in our industry are doing to reach out.  There is also a list of informational websites to help locate family members and friends across the Gulf Coast states.

ABC and TBS have picked up two theatrical titles from Sony PicturesBewitched and Stealth.  According to Variety, Bewitched will first go to TBS in September 2007 for a 9 month/multiple play stay, and then off to ABC for 12 months and 2 primetime plays.  Then Bewitched flies back to TBS for the remainder of its five year deal.  Stealth will first go to TNT in October 2007.  Sony still has an option to sign a broadcast partner for Stealth.

Source: Box Office Mojo  * NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *So, you liked Dancing with the Stars?  How do you feel about the same format … on ice skates?  Fox is banking on you loving the idea, and has brought in Olympic skater and “skating darling” Scott Hamilton to host/judge a six week series in which professional skaters will be paired with celebrity skaters, called Skating with Celebrities (A. Smith & Co.). According to Variety, participating skaters are Nancy Kerrigan, Kurt Browning, Tai Babilonia, Jenni Menno, Lloyd Eisler, and John Zimmerman.  Willing to show their sure-footedness on ice are celebs Dave Coulier, Todd Bridges, Deborah Gibson, Bruce Jenner, Kristy Swanson and Good Day LA Weathercaster Jillian Barberie.  Another skating darling, Dorothy Hamill, will be one of the judges along with Hamilton.  In this series, the decisions will be left to the judges alone – no viewer voting.

NBC has ordered a midseason series called Grand Union, previously known as Father of the McBrides, from NBC Universal Television and exec producer Tom Werner. The series stars Greg Grunberg as the manager of a local neighborhood grocery story, and the head of the McBride family.

In development at Sci Fi Channel is a project called What If? from New Line Television.  According to Variety, The project looks at historical events and asks the question, what if things turned out differently? Questions such as what if the Germans had won the war?  The show proposes answers with mock up news footage, interviews and re-creations.* EXECUTIVE MOVES *The Tony Danza Show kicks off its second season on September 12, and newly added as executive producers for the Buena Vista Television series are David Perler and Jill Blackstone.  David will oversee the celebrity guests and comedy segments; Jill will head up the topical and theme segments as well as the human interest stories.

Wexler Video President Chris Thompson has been awarded the added title of  CEO.   Steve Bell has been appointed as Manager/Technical Engineering & Design and, Gregg Kita as Manager/Audio Services.  Steve and Gregg will serve as both technical consultant and client liaison.  Additionally, the company has promoted Michael Graybill to the newly created position of Chief Engineer.  Michael will oversee the company’s engineering and quality control departments as well as the R&D division of the company’s Technical Engineering & Design department.

A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM COURT TV

Answer
They all like to watch meteoric rises, stars of greater and lesser magnitude, shooting stars, falling stars.  And they love it when a star goes ‘supernova’ !

Our young, upscale audience loves to watch, too.  For the misadventures of celebrities and Average Joes alike, it’s The Smoking Gun.  Tonight at 11PM E/P.   Only on Court TV.  Seriously Entertaining .

Today’s Trivia Question:
In the early 1950s, this Oscar-winning actor signed a $75-a-week contract with Universal for walk-on roles in low-budget horror flicks including Revenge of the Creature. Studio executives fired him when they decided his Adam’s apple protruded much too far for him to be star material. Who is he?   (click here with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
