Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain squared off against each other last Friday night in the first Presidential debate from approximately 9p to 1045p. The debate was carried live on 11 networks – ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, Telefutura, Telemundo, BBC America, CNBC, CNN, FOX News Channel and MSNBC; and according to Nielsen, the combined total viewers was 52.4 million. That’s down about 10 million as compared to debate #1 in 2004 between President George W. Bush and Sen. John Kerry, which drew 62.5 million total viewers. NBC confirmed Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will perform at the 2009 Super Bowl halftime show. The Super Bowl will air February 1 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. We tv renewed its frosh original series The Locator for a second season opening next February. Produced by Asylum Entertainment, The Locator’s sophomore season will have 14 new episodes featuring Troy Dunn who has successfully searched and found thousands of missing persons over 18 years. Starting this Friday, MyNetworkTV debuts WWE Friday Night SmackDown on its network at 8p with an all-star lineup including a “Triple Threat Match” between WWE Champion Triple H, World Heavyweight Champion Chris Jericho and ECW Champion Matt Hardy. The weekly show ended its run on The CW network last Friday night. Prior to the SmackDown opener, MyNetworkTV will also air WWE WrestleMania – the World Television Premiere on Thursday at 8p. Cartoon Network premieres the weekly series Star Wars: The Clone Wars from Lucasfilm Animation this Friday at 9p with a special one-hour episode. In addition, the network will also work with two entities on promotions. embedded into, and surrounding, the premiere episode. Cartoon Network is allowing Walden Media to insert a 90-second preview for the upcoming feature film City of Ember starring Bill Murray, Tim Robbins, Saoirse Ronan and Harry Treadaway into a commercial break. Also, Cartoon Network began airing custom spots yesterday encouraging viewers to tune-in to the premiere of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and to view an exclusive game code for Simcity Creator within commercial breaks promoting the game with footage and its release date from EA. The Sportsman Channel (TSC) introduces three new series this week all produced by the network’s parent company InterMedia Outdoors, Inc.:

Recording artist Jesse McCartney joins the cast of ABC Family’s Greek when the college-themed series returns for a second season next spring. Jesse will portray Andy a high school friend of Calvin’s played by Paul James. Another Jesse enters the spotlight as former Minnesota Governor and pro wrestler Jesse Ventura stars in a new pilot for truTV which ventures into the mysteries behind modern-day conspiracy theories. Production begins this October on the pilot which follows Ventura as he investigates cases around the country to find out if a theory is true or not. A. Smith & Co. Productions will produce the yet-unnamed pilot. SCI FI Channel moves forward on production next month on a new one-hour series RelicQuest (wt) in the investigative/adventure category. The six-episode series is slated to premiere early 2009. Produced by Bluebook Films, RelicQuest will criss-cross the world looking for historic relics and artifacts under the guidance of host British filmmaker Bruce Burgess. CBS News tapped Dee Dee Myers to be a political analyst for the network, reports Variety. Myers was the former White House press secretary during the first two years under President Bill Clinton. She joins other CBS News political analysts Dan Bartlett and Joe Trippi. MTV is working with Sean “Diddy” Combs and producer Mark Burnett on a new reality series called StarMaker, given a go for January 2009. StarMaker will follow several contestants as they live together while competing to be the solo superstar. Combs will be involved as his hand-selected team of star makers will put each contestant through a boot camp, teaching them how to perform, deal with photo shoots, reporters and more. HBO has a futuristic drama series in the development pipeline called Americatown from writer Bradford Winters and producers Tom Fontana, Barry Levinson, Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy, cites Variety. Americatown takes place 25-40 years in the future after a major decline of the United States forces groups of Americans to flee and live in “Chinatown” like communities in foreign cities. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios ink a distribution agreement under which Paramount will distribute Marvel’s next five self-produced feature films worldwide. The deal, an extension of the original pact between the two forged by Paramount’s CEO and Chairman Brad Grey, includes theatrical distribution in foreign territories previously serviced by Marvel through local distribution entities (Japan, Germany, France, Spain and Australia/New Zealand). The live-action movies included as part of this deal include Iron Man 2 (May 7, 2010), Thor (July 16, 2010), The First Avenger: Captain America (May 6, 2011), and The Avengers (July 16, 2011. The distribution deal also includes Iron Man 3. The only exception in to the new deal is that Telemunchen will distribute Iron Man 2 in Germany, according to the terms of a previous agreement it had with Marvel. Full edition: CYN KIDS. CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Entertainment One, a Canadian producer and distributor, is buying DHX Media in yet another acquisition for the company after recently acquiring Barna-Alper Productions, Blueprint Entertainment and several others. The $65+ million deal for the Halifax TV producer will bring the company a 2,200×30-minute programming library. DHX owns Decode Entertainment, Halifax Film and Studio B Productions. Rainbow Media elevated Kim Martin to President/GM of WE tv up from EVP/GM of the network. In her new role, Kim will continue to lead the network and report to Ed Carroll, President/National Entertainment Services, Rainbow Media. EMI Music named Howard Handler to the new position of EVP/Head of Marketing in North America. Howard begins this Wednesday and will handle artist marketing, advertising, publicity, promotion, video production, digital and tour marketing for artists on the various EMI Music’s North American labels. Based in New York, Howard reports to Sam van der Feltz, President/Global Marketing. Andrew Ames was appointed VP/Global Production for the non-profit educational organization Sesame Workshop, producer of Sesame Street. Andrew will supervise all international co-productions in addition to special projects production. Specifically his duties will cover production/creative management, budgeting and financing, international content supervision and cross-platform content efforts. Andrew will report to Miranda Barry, EVP/Creative. Nancy Steinfeld joined Destination Media, the out-of-home digital media company behind Gas Station TV and C-Store TV, as SVP/National Sales Western Region, part of the company’s national expansion. Based in Los Angeles, Nancy will focus on national sales and marketing efforts in her territory that covers California, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona and Colorado. CBS Television Distribution promoted Scott Koondel as President/Distribution to head the company’s sales of off-network programming to cable and digital media outlets. Scott works with properties from CBS Paramount Network Television, CBS News and Showtime as well as classic series. In addition, Scott will head sales of original programming by CTD to cable and will provide oversight for sales-associated efforts in research, marketing and legal. Scott reports to John Nogawski, President. Gary Rosenfeld is the new SVP/New Media Licensing with Twentieth Century Fox.
