Cynopsis: Kids!
09/02/08
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 2, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
The weekend proved a significant one for Warner Bros.’ The Dark Knight, which swooped through the $500 million marker in domestic box office receipts, reaching $504.7 million, according to the weekend estimates reported by Box Office Mojo. The Dark Knight reached the milestone in just 45 day, and is now the second biggest domestic grossing movie ever behind Paramount’s Titanic (1997), which still holds strong in first place with $600.8 million. Titanic too 91 days to reach pour through $500 million. The movie is expected to top out at about $530 million domestically, per just about every analyst and every report everywhere on earth.
MTV Networks International (MTVNI) will launch its first 24/7 international HD service focusing on kids and music, MTVNHD (MTV Networks High Definition), on Monday, September 15, from 12 noon. Hosted by several different personalities from different countries, the 24/7 English language service will be available in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Poland and Sweden, with plans to expand the MTVNHD service to France, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, The UK, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Venezuela by the end of this year. MTVNHD will be operated by MTVNI’s Emerging Markets Group, which will produce and broadcast the channel from its Warsaw hub, as well as incorporating programming produced by other MTVNI production teams in Southern Europe, the UK and Latin America. Kids programming on MTVNHD will be featured in a Nickelodeon block, broadcasting Saturday and Sunday mornings, including show such as SpongeBob SquarePants, Avatar: The Legend of Aang, Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, Tak & the Power of Juju and MR. Meaty, among others. Additionally, the channel will be supported by its own website at www.mtvnhd.com .
Aardman, the animation studio, unveils the restructuring of its Marketing, Licensing and International TV Distribution departments, merging them all into a newly formed division called Aardman Rights. The new arm will market and sell Aardman content across all media and aims to expand its portfolio by representing third-party properties. Sean Clarke will head the new Aardman Rights, reporting directly to Miles Bullough, Head of Broadcast. Previously, Clarke helmed Aardman’s Marketing and Licensing teams. Additionally, reporting to Clarke will be two teams, Marketing and Sales. Jennifer Burgos joins as Head of Marketing, while Alix Wisemand continues to serve as Head of Sales/TV, DVD and New Media. Additionally, Rob Goodchild joins the licensing team later this month to work in tandem with Helen Neno as Licensing Manager. Look for the new team at Mipcom 2008 next month.
