Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 27, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Preschool channel Sprout is set to premiere the new full-length puppet series Pajanimals on Monday, October 10, at 8p.  Co-produced by Sprout, The Jim Henson Company and Northern Ireland’s Sixteen South Television, Pajanimals is designed to help parents/caregivers get their preschoolers settled down and following a bedtime routine through imaginary journeys and songs, and also models kindness for younger kids.  Based on the short-form series of the same name, Pajanimals revolves around four cuddly puppet characters were designed and built by Jim Henson’s Creature Show from original concepts by toy/apparel designer/artist Jeff Muncy (Pet Alien).  The Jim Henson Company is handling all ancillary rights for the property including licensing, video and merchandising.  Northern Ireland Screen provides funding assistance for Pajanimals.

DreamWorks Animation and Netflix enter into a new multi-year premium pay TV licensing deal in the US, under which Netflix will serve as the exclusive subscription TV service for first-run feature films and select TV specials from DreamWorks Animation beginning in 2013 for viewing on TV, tablet, computer and mobile phones.   The deal is significant in that DreamWorks Animation is the first US studio to ink a first-run streaming pay TV window via the internet, versus a traditional premium pay TV deal, per NYT.  Additionally, select movie titles from the DreamWorks Animation catalogue, such as Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar 2, Chicken Run and Antz, will also be available to Netflix members over time.

LICENSING

Indie video game publisher GameMill Entertainment is set to release the new game Moxie Girlz for Nintendo DS, based on MGA Entertainment’s Moxie Girlz fashion dolls, for holiday 2011.  The new Moxie Girlz for Nintendo DS allows players to customize their Moxie Girlz character and express their creativity in a Fashion Play mode, which features different hairstyles, accessories and the like, as well as share secrets in the Journal and Diary modes, interact with friends, and take quizzes.  Like the Moxie Girlz fashion doll line, the new game is designed to bolster the confidence of young girls through positive messaging.

Jakks Pacific expands global distribution for toys based on the boy 6-11 targeted animated adventure series Monsuno (52×30) as it inks two new exclusive toy distribution deals with Planet Fun for New Zealand and Prima Toys for South Africa.  Other toy distribution partners for the property include Giochi Preziosi Group for Europe and Hunter Products for Australia.  Nickelodeon is set to launch Monsuno on a range of its channels around the world, beginning with Nicktoons in the US and select English-speaking countries.  Monsuno is co-production o f Pacific Animation Partners, a joint venture between Jakks Pacific and Dentsu Entertainment USA, with FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) and The Topps Company.  FME will be responsible for the exclusive worldwide distribution of Monsuno TV programming (excluding Asia) and serves as the master licensing agent for the brand outside of Asia.  JAKKS Pacific is the creator of the underlying Monsuno property and master toymaker for the toy line, which is expected to debut at retail in the US to coincide with the US TV premiere anticipated for spring 2012.  The Topps Company has will produce Monsuno trading card games, confectioneries and related products.

Endemol appoints Kasmanas Licensing as the exclusive licensing agent for Bananas in Pyjamas in Brazil.  Kasmanas will be responsible for helping to re-establish the preschool brand in Brazil. A Southern Star Entertainment and Southern Star Singapore Production in association with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the new CGI animated Bananas in Pyjamas TV series continues to make its way around the world.

Anchor Bay Entertainment will release The Wubb Club!, a new DVD title (82 minutes) featuring episodes of Nick Jr.’s Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! series, at retail on January 3, 2012.  Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! is produced by Bolder Media, in association with Starz Media’s Film Roman Animation Studio.  Susan Miller (co-producer, Ella Enchanted) and Fred Seibert (executive producer, The Fairly OddParents) are the executive producers of the preschool show, which was created by Bob Boyle (producer, The Fairly OddParents).

MARKETING

Scholastic Media will celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Magic School Bus in conjunction with the release off new games The Magic School Bus: Oceans for Nintendo DS and The Magic School Bus: Dinosaurs app for iPad, both of which are based on Scholastic books by Joanna Cole and illustrated by Bruce Degen.  Among the 25th anniversary events and activities are a live show, new online game, and some local events.  The new live national touring show, The Magic School Bus – Live! The Climate Challenge, produced by Maximum Entertainment Productions and The Brad Simon Organization, will make stops in 60 US cities.  The anniversary will be supported by a national ad campaign that invites kids, parents and teachers to get out and explore with an online game, titled Where Will The Bus Take You!, which launches October 10 at www.scholastic.com/magicschoolbus .  Additionally, Identity Games will release its new electronic GameChanger board, which works with the iPad, featuring The Magic School Bus game skins.  The Young Scientists Club will launch The Magic School Bus Science Club and release five new property-based activity kits this year, while Scholastic Audio has three new Magic School Bus audiobooks set for release in 2012.  The Magic School Bus animated series currently airs daily on the Qubo channel, and weekends on Qubo’s programming block on NBC, ION and Telemundo.

To support the launch of its new full length preschool series Pajanimals on Sprout in the US this October, The Jim Henson Company partners with Chick-fil-A for a national kids meal promotion.  From October 1 and running through December 31, 2011, 1,500+ Chick-fil-A locations in 39 states will offer one of five different Pajanimals board books with the purchase of any of its kids meals for 3-year-olds and younger.  The Pajanimals board books, Nighty Night, Let’s Stick to the Plan, Lights in the Dark, La-La-Lullaby, and Sleeping Makes Me Feel All Right, are all in keeping with the goal of the series to help kids quiet down, feel safe, and get ready for bed each night.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

UK-based Little Brother Productions teams with Canada’s Sardine Productions to develop and co-produce an animated adaptation of The Revenge Files of Alistair Fury (52×11).  The new TV series will be based on the eponymous books series by author Jamie Rix and published by Random House, as well as the BBC live-action series also based on the books.  Rix is also the MD of Little Brother.  The series revolves around  Alistair Fury and his two pals and their humorous adventures as they take on everyone (family, friends) and everything as they seek revenge against the endless wrongs done against all boys.

DQ Entertainment (DQE) inks a co-production deal with Formula Fun Entertainment (FFE) in the UK and Telegael in Ireland to co-produce the new CGI animated preschool series Franco and Formula Fun (52×11).  The series is slated to be available in early 2013.  Inspired by the sport of car racing, the series revolves around six-year-old Franco and his adventures with he super-powered toy racing car friends both on and off the track.  Franco and Formula has been pre-sold to 28 countries via broadcast partners including TV2 (Norway), MTV OY (Finland), Al Jazeera Children’s Channel (Middle East), Israel (Hop! TV) and Iceland (CH2).  FFE and Telegael will oversee pre-production, with animation production taking place at DQE’s studios in India and post-production at Telegael in Ireland.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nelvana Enterprises completes a new broadcast deal for three comedy series with Cartoon Network Latin America.  Under agreement, Cartoon Network Latin America acquires the live-action series Mr. Young, and the animated series Sidekick and Scaredy Squirrel for broadcast across Latin America and the Caribbean.  Sidekick will debut this October, with Mr. Young and Scaredy Squirrel joining the network’s lineup in 2012.  Sidekick and Scaredy Squirrel can currently be seen on Cartoon Network US.

41 Entertainment (41e) is appointed by Namco Bandai Games as the worldwide distributor of the new Pac-Man 3D (26×26) series, set to debut in fall 2013.   Producing the new Pack Man series in stereoscopic 3D is Arad Production’s Avi Arad (Spider-Man, Iron Man, Hulk, Fantastic Four and X-Men) and Rick Ungar (Biker Mice from Mars, X-Men Evolution, Legend of the Dragon).  The series is penned by Tom Ruegger (Scooby-Doo, Animaniacs, and Batman – The Animated Series) and Paul Rugg (Animaniacs, Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated).  The series feature animated created by Sprite Animation.  41e will privately screen the new Pac-Man 3D for clients at its booth at Mipcom (3D glasses and all).  In the 1980s, Hannah-Barbera and Namco produced an animated Pac-Man TV series.

Spain-based producer/distributor Imira Entertainment acquires the worldwide distribution and licensing rights to two new preschool short-form series, which it will offer, alongside a new K6-11 aimed animated series, at Mipcom.

  • The Lighthouse (26×6) – this new 2D animated preschool series follows seven-year-old Dana who is tired of winter and takes viewers on her imaginary adventures to Lighthouse Island.   Dana, along with her pals a Labrador retriever and a lighthouse robot they meet on the island, discovers wildlife and nature on the island.  Produced by TVC, publishers Editorial Claret and illustrator Pilarin Bayes and his daughter Marga Sala, the series is available for all territories.
  • Joco (52×3) – a daily live-action, non-verbal physical comedy, revolves around Joco, a clumsy and funny guy, with a collection of colored hats, who works hard to solve problems (mostly of his own making).  Joco brings a kidlike approach to funny everyday moments.  El Terrat produces the preschool series.
  • Lucky Fred (52×12) – Imira will also launch this new 2D animated comedy at the market.  Lucky Fred follows the adventures of Fred, an average 13-yr-old boy, who accidentally becomes the owner of a super-powered, shape-shifting robot that can turn into anything Fred wants with a simple command.  Targeted to K6-12, the series is an Imira co-production with Televisio de Catalunya (Spain), RAI Fiction (Italy) and Philippines-based Top Draw Animation.  Lucky Fred has already been pre-sold to 150+ territories including: TF1 (France); Disney Channel (Spain, France, Italy, Germany, India & Australia) and Nickelodeon (Benelux, Scandinavia, Latin America, Asia & South Korea).

Marvista Entertainment and Saban Brands will debut three new Power Rangers Samurai TV specials (2×30, 1×60), based on the new TV series of the same name.  Featuring the Samurai Rangers, the new specials include:

  • Christmas Together, Friends Forever – the Rangers reflect on their first year together as a team and learn about the spirit of the season.
  • Party Monsters – a scare-fest when the creepiest monsters from beyond get together for party and trade stories about their battles with the Rangers.
  • The Clash of the Red Rangers – a crossover special where the Samurai Rangers team with the mysterious RPM Rangers Red fend off the dual threat from Master Xandred’s Mooger army and robotic super-villain from the RPM Ranger’s dimension.  When something goes awry, the two Red Rangers turn on one another and the fate of the world hangs in the balance.  (And I’m not telling you what happens … mostly because I don’t know).

Portfolio International completes worldwide sales for the series The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!  Broadcasters picking up the popular preschool series The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! including Canal J (Tiji) (France and Russia), Al-Jazeera Children’s Channel (Middle East), TRT Kids (Turkey), Media Corp (Singapore), Asiana Licensing (Korea) and Hor En Culture Co. (Taiwan).  Portfolio Entertainment recently announced plans for a second season and a holiday special.  Portfolio International will showcase The Cat in the Hat Knows a lot About That! and other properties at Mipcom next week.

Toronto-based CCI Entertainment acquires the worldwide distribution rights to Apartment 11‘s kids science-centric series Finding Stuff Out (16×30). Targeted to K6-9, the series revolves around a young host who produces a webcast devoted to gathering science-related questions from real kids, as well as answering them with in-studio demonstrations.  CCI’s digital division, with funding from Bell and Shaw Rocket Fund, co-developed the online content for the series.  Canadian Broadcasters include TVO.

Target Entertainment, a rights management group, signs new broadcast deals for its kid-targeted properties as it prepares to head to MipJunior.

  • Chapman Entertainment’s preschool series Roary the Racing Car furthers its way through Europe as Rai’s preschool channel YoYo (Italy) acquires the second season of the series and renews the first, and Latvia’s pubcaster picks up the first season.  In several airline deals, Roary the Racing Car has been acquired by Swiss Air, Air Mauritius, Royal Jordanian and Emirates airlines.
  • In other airline news, Target signs deals with Emirates and Air Mauritius for Novel Entertainment’s animated series Horrid Henry and Chapman’s Fifi and The Flowertots.
  • Hop! (Israel) picks up two new CBeebies series, one is Chapman’s Raa Raa The Noisy Lion and the other Dinamo’s The AbadasCBeebies in Africa acquires Raa Raa The Noisy Lion along with Pop TV (Slovenia), the latter also taking Horrid Henry and the first season of Roary the Racing Car.
  • Encuentro (Argentina) picks up the second season of Roary the Racing Car, as well as the Christmas special of Ted Seiger’s Molly Monster seasons 1 and 2.
  • Target has also licensed a package of 85-hours of kids programming for the US with Canadian based Kidobi, a new video streaming platform that launched worldwide this summer.  The programming package includes Monster Animation’s Fluffy Gardens, Seiger’s Molly Monster, and Ambience Entertainment’s Larry the Lawnmower.

Paris-based awol animation unveils the first international TV and home entertainment sales for Portuguese newbie Big Storm Studio‘s 3D CGI preschool series Gombby’s Green Island (52×13).  The series has been acquired by broadcaster ClanTV/TVE (Spain), on the heels of TV deals with RTP and Panda in Portugal.  Home entertainment deals include those with LNK Portugal and Big Picture Spain, and the first licensing and merchandising partners, Panini, Giochi Preziosi, Concentra and Majora also signing on.  Gombby’s Green Island revolves around Gombby, a little baker boy, and his friends as they investigate all sorts of mysteries and search for the rainbow’s end on Green Island, and meet up with Gadget Man, who entertains them with his endless inventions.  The series will make its official debut at MipJunior this weekend.

Distribution360 will offer 200+ hours of programming and content, including kid-targeted properties, at Mipcom.  Among the kid/family series it will feature are:

  • Olive the Ostrich (52×5 or 13×30, interactive elements) – the CGI animated preschool series follows the imaginary adventures of Olive, an inquisitive ostrich, which see her travel to amazing places.  Each episode begins with drawings by real kids (submitted online) that are brought to life with animation.  Produced by Blue-Zoo Productions, the series recently debuted on Nick Jr. in the UK.
  • The popular preschool properties This is Daniel Cook (131×6, 65×6, online games, and format rights) and This is Emily Yeung (65×6, 2×30 specials, online games, format rights) will be offered at the market.  Produced by marblemedia and Sinking Ship Entertainment, the series air in 90+ countries (12 languages), including in the US on the Disney Junior block on Disney Channel.
  • Splatalot (26×30 in English or French, format rights, online games and videos) – a tween-targeted reality series that features an extreme obstacle course with all sorts of splats and spills.  Each episode of the three round game begins with 12 new teen contestants, known as Attackers, as they make their way through medieval style challenge rounds, while a group of six gladiators work to protect the castle from the teens, the last of which will be crowned the winner.  Online fans can play a series of Flash games and create shareable highlight reels.  The series is also produced by marblemedia.

Italy’s Atlantyca Entertainment, a multifaceted company with production, distribution, licensing and publishing divisions, heads to Mipcom, where for the first it will host its own booth to showcase its newest production efforts, as well as be available for its Geronimo Stilton (52×23) animated series with co-production partner Moonscoop.  Atlantyca’s sales division will also showcase the animated series Dive Olly Dive! (104×11) for Italian speaking countries, which recently debuted in Italy on the Boomerang and Boing channels, Monkey King (52×23), which it holds the European distribution rights.  Additionally, the company handles the distribution rights in select Eastern European territories of a handful of animated series from other third party partners.
