Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 27, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing. Potential acquisition discussions between DreamWorks SKG and NBC Universal have been shut down. The conversation ender came from DreamWorks who decided the talks were not moving forward, and the parties were not able to come to terms on various deal points. According to The Wall Street Journal, the conversation may not end there however, as both sides still like the idea. NBC Universal would have picked up the DreamWorks live action studio as well as its 60-film library, and distribution rights to films coming from the DreamWorks animation studio. Tonight’s Premieres: * MORE GOOD STUFF * If you missed the premiere of UPN’s Everybody Hates Chris, you can watch it on Google Video for the next three days (including today) by going to http://video.google.com/chris to play the entire pilot episode via streaming video ABC is looking for some new fare on Saturday nights, and they want everyone to know about it. According to Variety, emails were sent out to the production community yesterday that the network is looking for shows that can be produced for less than $500,000 per ep, are broadly appealing, not niche ideas, said the email. Think unscripted, think low cost, which then makes ABC think low risk. They are looking for both big name producers and smaller named producers, tho all submissions must be made thru an agency. Bravo has picked up a total of 130 feature films from three different distributors: 70 titles from Paramount Domestic Distribution, 50 from Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution and 11 from Sony Pictures Television. The first title to hit the air will be Vanilla Sky from the Paramount package on October 14. Other titles in the packages include Apocalypse Now and Braveheart from Paramount; Miss Congeniality and You’ve Got Mail from WBDCD, and The Silence of the Lambs and The Natural from Sony. This marks the single largest theatrical movie acquisition since Bravo joined NBC Universal. US Digital Television, LLC has finalized a funding agreement of approx $26 million with an investment group for its all digital over-the-air subscription based terrestrial TV service. The investment group includes Fox Television Stations, Inc., Hearst-Argyle Television, Inc., McGraw-Hill Broadcasting, LIN TV Corp., Morgan-Murphy Stations and Telcom DTV. Consumers receive the USDTV service through a VHF/UHF antenna connected to a proprietary USDTV set-top box, producing digital picture and sound on standard TVs. The USDTV service offers approximately 30 all-digital channels, including local digital and HDTV broadcast channels and 12 cable networks, including Fox News Channel, ESPN and Disney Channel for under $20 a month. Currently being tested in three pilot markets (Salt Lake City, Albuquerque and Las Vegas), USDTV broadcasts its service by leasing spectrum from its TV station partners in each market. Planned tech upgrades include the introduction of video on-demand content and digital video recording services. The USDTV service and set-top boxes will be available from USDTV and through national and local retailers. Sirius Satellite Radio has been sued by The Word Network this week. The African-American ministries and gospel music media broadcaster claimed racial discrimination and breach of contract following Sirius’ cancellation of their contract and dropping of its programming this month. According to The Word, their programming was the only one that integrated African American-focused religious programming and ministry and that Sirius doesn’t carry and allegedly does not plan on carrying similar programming. Sirius reportedly decided not to renew the programming due to poor ratings. The contract cancellation was opposed by several members of Congress, African-American religious leaders and many others. G4 has picked up repeats of The Man Show, the off-Comedy Central series distributed by Debmar Studios and Mercury Entertainment. Produced by Stone Stanley Prods., Variety reports G4 will pay in the neighborhood of $7.8 million for the three year cable-exclusive deal. The Man Show debuts on G4 on October 10 at 10p. He was perhaps best known for his “Would you believe ….?” lines, shoephones and his regular struggles with the Cone of Silence. At the age of 82, Don Adams died after a year in poor health. Get Smart was his first starring series for television, debuting in 1965, for which he eventually took home three Emmy awards as best actor in a comedy series. While he made several guest appearances after Get Smart ended in 1970, the majority of his time was spent doing voice work for animation. Adams was the voice of Inspector Gadget and Principal Hickey on Disney’s Pepper Ann. * NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION * NBC has ordered a script of a crime drama called Class Action from executive producer Erin Brockovich and writers Mark Gibson and Phil Halprin, and produced by Roundtable Ink and 20th. According to Variety, the project comes with a penalty in the event it does not go to pilot. The storylines focus on a stream of class action suits, many of the ideas coming from Brockovich and her history of legal cases. A&E has three shows currently in development, according to Variety: · Aspen (Stone & Co. Ent) is a dramedy series set in the high-end life of Aspen, Colorado. · The Fabulous Bakker Boy (World of Wonder Prods) is a reality series with cameras trained on Jamie Bakker, son of Jim Bakker and Tammy Faye, and his quest to built Revolution Ministries. · Secret Lives (Meg TV) is a reality series about people who are about to come clean to friends and family about the double lives they’ve been leading. SCI FI Channel has ordered 13 one-hour episodes of Eureka (including the 2-hour pilot). The cast includes Colin Ferguson, Salli Richardson-Whitfield, Greg Germann, Joe Morton, Debrah Farentino, Maury Chaykin, Matt Frewer and Jordan Hinson. Casting Note: Conde Nast Media Group, Cargo Magazine and Emoticon Productions are currently casting a fresh, fast-paced, “info-taining” lifestyle series for men. They’re on the look-out for spontaneous, lively, sharp men and women (ages 25-35) who are true experts in one of these areas: shopping (fashion), technology (gadgets & gizmos), cars, women (dating) and entertainment (pop-culture). Previous hosting experience preferred (contact by agents/managers is OK), but not required. Send a headshot, resume and SHORT cover letter telling us about your specific area of expertise (and please put that area of expertise in the Subject Line) to * EXECUTIVE MOVES * Scripps Networks has promoted Dave Tussey to VP/Human Resources.
