Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 26, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

The network evening news wars continue as last week (September 18-22): NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams won the week and every night with 8.18 million total viewers for the week, according to Nielsen Media Research. The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric came in second for the week with 7.69 million total viewers, while ABC’s World News Tonight with Charles Gibson followed with 7.58 million total viewers. Among A25-54, all three networks delivered a 2.1 rating.  For CBS, that’s down 25% from the previous week in the demo, ABC was up 11% and NBC was up 5% week to week.

WE tv has picked up all three seasons of Hope & Faith from Buena Vista Television and will debut the sitcom in marathon format on November 24 starting at 12n. The half-hour show with a total of 73 episodes will then air weekdays starting November 27 at 7p and 730p.

HGTV will introduce three new series to its line-up in early October:

  • Picking Up the Pieces, premieres October 1 at 10p – A miniseries that looks at the emotional stories behind four real families who lost their homes due to the F3 tornado that hit Westminster, TX in May of this year. Five half-hour episodes will air through October 29.
  • Hidden Potential, premieres October 1 at 830p – Weekly series allowing home buyers to use advanced 3-D computer technology to uncover the hidden possibilities of homes with poor design issues.
  • 24 Hour Design, premieres October 6 at 830p – Weekly series featuring designer/host Angelo Surmelis and his team serving up a multitude of design time-saving ideas and short cuts.

 
Retirement Living, a new cable network which targets the 55+ crowd, has launched on CN8, The Comcast Network. Airing programming M-F, 12n-4p, Retirement Living reaches more than 9 million Comcast cable homes in 12 states and 20 DMAs. The four-hour programming block includes shows on healthy living and wellness to social and political issues aimed at older Americans. The network can also be viewed via webcasts at www.CN8.tv. FYI: right now in the U.S. there are 67 million people age 55 and older, and by the year 2035 there will be 116 million.
 
Playmania, the live participation show on GSN will now air Tue-Sun as of October 3rd, airing 12m-2a. Viewers can play for cash and prizes valued up to $5,000 through text messaging or online at gsn.com. Playmania is produced by GSN in partnership with Optimistic Entertainment.
 
Simply Green with Danny Seo premieres October 10 on LIME television and at the same time the series will be distributed via LIME’s many off-shoots: online, on demand, DVD’s, Sirius satellite radio, podcasting and mobile. The show offers eco-friendly, money-saving tips for the home. In addition to hosting the video and audio content, Danny is the creator and executive producer of the series.
 

* BROADBAND & DIGITAL *

Disney-ABC Television Group will offer its ABC News products through an online broadband player to be hosted by it’s 200+ local ABC affiliates and their websites nationwide. Starting this fall, the video player will contain clips of World News Tonight with Charles Gibson and Good Morning America plus segments from other ABC News broadcasts. Eventually, affiliates will have the option to add local news to the video player.

Starz Entertainment and Sony Pictures Television have entered into an exclusive agreement under which Starz Entertainment picks up the rights to run 500+ movie titles from the Sony library via its multiple distribution platforms, including its 16 linear channels, SVOD and the broadband video download service, Vongo.  The agreement runs from 2008-2014 and gives Starz Entertainment’s Starz and Encore channels rights to a selection of Sony’s library films; tho the VOD deal for Vongo begins earlier – in October 2006.  Titles featured under the pact include Spider-Man, men in Black and Bad Boy movies, as well as the animated movie Stuart Little, Gandhi, Jerry Maguire, Groundhog Day, and Sleepless in Seattle.  The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Discovery Communications has increased its content extensions for the series Discovery Atlas across its media, educational and commerce platforms. Viewers can experience Discovery Atlas through the company’s first HD and Blu-Ray DVD release. Additional content is also available through www.discoveryatlas.com, Discovery Mobile, Google Earth and the iTunes Music Store, as well as through various Discovery education products. Discovery Atlas: China Revealed is the first edition, making its worldwide television debut on October 1 at 9p on Discovery Channel and Discovery HD Theater.

* PRODUCTION / DEVELOPMENT / CASTING *

DIRECTV, Inc. will morph the popular MySpace.com site experience into a new weekly half-hour TV show called Project MyWorld set to debut October 2 at 6p on DIRECTV’s Channel 101. This partial documentary style show will focus on three female friends who travel the world while one is looking for love, another adventure, and the third the best indie bands. They also meet up with various people they meet through MySpace.com. Each of these women will have a say in the creation and production of Project MyWorld as all are executive producers and maintain the show’s website at www.myspace.com/projectmyworld.

Yesterday, we said Dick Wolf Prods was working on a comedy for NBC; today we’ll tell you that David E. Kelley is doing the same for Fox.  Tho Kelley doing a comedy is easier to get your head around considering all the humor you’ll find in many of his dramas.  In any case, this new project, so far untitled, from 20th Century Fox, is of course in a legal setting, focusing on a group of jurors participating in a high profile case and sequestered at a motel. Writing the pilot will be Steve Baldikoski and Bryan Behar, co-creators on the project.
 
Rena Sofer will be appearing in two primetime series this season, in both as recurring characters.  First up – NBC’s freshman series Heroes as the wife of the brother who is running for office.  And on Fox, she’ll appear in 24 as the wife of power broker Graham.

The independent production company and distributor, IMG Media has two new series in development or on the roster for this fall – an untitled reality docusoap pilot for Bravo set in New York City; and the NFL Cheerleader Playoffs for the NFL Network. The latter is an eleven-episode series showcasing 50 cheerleaders from 25 teams who will compete against each other in various challenges.

A&E has ordered eight episodes of a new reality series for next year, The Coreys: Return of the Lost Boys, featuring Corey Haim and Corey Feldman. The project is from RDF USA.  These two Corey’s were a popular pair about 20 years ago, and this weekly half hour series brings updates viewers on what the Coreys have been up to.   Also at A&E, a project called Paranormal U has been given a 13 episode order.  This series comes from Go Go Luckey Prods and Four Seasons Prods. Paranormal U focuses in a research society based at Penn State which studies and in some cases debunks various paranormal phenomena.
 
Casting Call: A new TV show is looking for companies experiencing problems such as unruly employees, backstabbing, inappropriate conduct, to meet with best-selling authors and “business shrinks” who offer “therapy” to solve the office turmoil. Casting Call: NBC’s midseason show America’s Got Talent will hold open casting calls in multiple cities in search of the next big act. In season two, more audition footage will be shown as well as personal stories about the contestants. A boot camp will also be implemented where acts who make it past the televised audition phase, will work with experts in their field to improve their skills. Contestants under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult or legal guardian and must have parental permission to audition. All persons must have: photo I.D., be a legal U.S. citizen, legal permanent resident or have a current employment visa, and arrive at the audition in costume. RHI Entertainment, formerly Hallmark Entertainment, has elevated Michael R. Oesterlin to SVP/International Sales.
 
Starting this weekend, Tanika Ray will co-Host the weekend edition of Extra, moving from her current position as New York correspondent for the entertainment magazine. In addition, Tanika will continue as a correspondent for the daily version of Extra.
 

* RATINGS *

Sunday – A18-49 Analysis:  ABC ranked #1 Sunday night with 6.4/16 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. NBC notched a second place standing at 4.6/12, and then came FOX 4.4/11, CBS 3.6/9, CW 1.1/3, UNIV 0.9/2 and TELE 0.4/1. FOX won at 7p with its own NFL overrun and The OT at 4.5/14; the premiere of ABC’s EM: Home Edition Part 1 earned a 3.4/10, while Football Night in America on NBC was third at 2.5/8 and the season debut of CBS’ 60 Minutes brought in a 2.4/7. EM: Home Edition Part 2 gave ABC the top prize at 8p with 6.3/15, followed by the start of the Broncos vs. Patriots game on NBC at 5.0/12. ABC had no worries at 9p with the season introduction of Desperate Housewives at 9.5/21, while NFL football on NBC was second again at 5.7/13, and the season opener of Cold Case on CBS and the FOX sitcoms Family Guy and The War at Home tied for third at 4.0/9 each. The 10p hour brought in a third win for ABC with the new drama Brothers and Sisters at 6.2/15, with football on NBC next at 5.3/13 and the season debut of Without a Trace on CBS third at 4.8/12.
