Cynopsis: Kids!
09/26/06
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 26, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
MySpace.com launched its internet safety campaign yesterday, which includes the publication of both a Parents’ and School Administrators’ Guides to Internet Safety. Dedicated to informing parents and educators, the guides lays out how MySpace works, answers questions about social networks and the internet in general and underlines both the company’s safety practices and the challenges and information for kid/student safety on the internet. The campaign kick-off is a strategic partnership with Seventeen Magazine, the National School Board Association (NSBA) and the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), in support of the third annual National Cyber Security Awareness Month in October, a nationwide effort to educate Internet users about safe online practices. The Parents’ Guide is available for download from MySpace at http://www.myspace.com/safetytips in the Tips for Parents section, and will be distributed to public school administrators.
Elsewhere at MySpace.com, DIRECTV, Inc. will morph the popular MySpace.com site experience into a new weekly half-hour TV show called Project MyWorld set to debut October 2 at 6p on DIRECTV’s Channel 101. This partial documentary style show will focus on three female friends who travel the world while one is looking for love, another adventure, and the third the best indie bands. They also meet up with various people they meet through MySpace.com. Each of these women will have a say in the creation and production of Project MyWorld as all are executive producers and maintain the show’s website at www.myspace.com/projectmyworld.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Boomerang is going commando, so to speak, with the launch of No Undies Mondays launching Monday, October 9 at 4-5p. No Undies Mondays will highlight some of most popular animated characters that are, well, simply pant-less, beginning 10/9 with Yogi Bear, Peter Potamus and So So, Squiddly Diddly, Breezly and Sneezly and Huckleberry Hound. Subsequent weeks will include Top Cat, Kwicky Koala and Wilfred Wolf, and The Hair Bear Bunch as well as Quick Draw McGraw and Baba Looey, Augie Doggy and Doggy Daddy, Sherriff Ricochet Rabbit and his deputy, and Punkin Puss and Mushmouse among many other pant-less characters.
Program Partners has picked up the US broadcast syndication rights to distribute the teen targeted series Degrassi: The Next Generation, which airs on The N. Under the deal Degrassi will run as a strip from fall 2007. Season six of Degrassi: The Next Generation is set to premiere on The N this Friday, September 29 at 8p. Program Partners is marketing Degrassi: The Next Generation as an outgrowth of its worldwide distribution agreement with Thunderbird Films. The syndication deal will begin with 119 episodes, and freshen with an additional 19-24 episodes each year, as long as the series continues in production. The terms are for 2 years, it’s a cash + barter deal with 2 minutes of national barter per episode (M-Th, Friday episode is barter-free).
G4 will premiere Ninja Warrior, a weekly competition series that pits the world-class and amateur athletes against one another in a grueling four-stage course, on Tuesday, October 3, at 12m as part of its late night Midnight Spank block. Acquired from Japan’s Tokyo Broadcasting System, where the series is called Sasuke, Ninja Warrior episodes will be dubbed into English for their air on G4. Each round of the series features 100 competitors, and of the 1,400+ competitors who have started Stage One, since the series debuted in 1997, less than 200 have made it through. Ninja Warrior competitors include US Olympic gymnasts Paul and Morgan Hamm, Bulgarian gymnast Jordan Jovtchev and several amateur Japanese competitors. No, not a kids-targeted show, nor at a kid-friendly time of day, but they’d likely find it entertaining.
Starz Entertainment and Sony Pictures Television have entered into an exclusive agreement under which Starz Entertainment picks up the rights to run 500+ movie titles from the Sony library via its multiple distribution platforms, including its 16 linear channels, SVOD and the broadband video download service, Vongo. The agreement runs from 2008-2014 and gives Starz Entertainment’s Starz and Encore channels rights to a selection of Sony’s library films; however the VOD deal for Vongo begins in October 2006. Titles featured under the pact include Spider-Man, men in Black and Bad Boy movies, as well as the animated movie Stuart Little, Gandhi, Jerry Maguire, Groundhog Day, and Sleepless in Seattle. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
NBDtv, the newly re-launched UK indie distributor, will attend Mipcom with a number of properties:
- The Wind In The Willows – a live action TV movie based on Kenneth Grahame’s classic book of the same name, and adapted by Lee Hall, who wrote the movie Billy Elliot. Developed by the BBC and Canada’s CBC, The Wind In The Willows is produced by indie production company Box TV. The cast includes Bob Hoskins, Mat Lucas, Imelda Staunton, Mark Gatiss and Anna Maxwell Martin.
- Underground Ernie – a CGI animated series of 26 twelve-minute episodes that takes place in the London Underground train from Joella Productions. Targeted to K3-8 years old, the series revolves around the adventures of Ernie, an underground supervisor who makes daily travel safe and on time. The UK version features the vocal talents of Gary Lineker and music from the Wonder Stuff.
- David Gilmour On An Island – Live – David Gilmour, famed singer/guitarist of Pink Floyd stars in a new concert filmed in HD in which he performs his newest songs and Pink Floyd hits. Joining Gilmour is Pink Floyd keyboard player Richard Wright and cameos from David Crosby and Graham Nash. David Gilmour On An Island Live was directed by David Mallet.
Portfolio Entertainment has picked-up the international rights to Spellz (26×11), a new series that focuses on the magic of magicians. Targeted to K6-9, Spellz is hosted by Jay Sankey and his kid assistant, Bridget Hall, who together shed light on how some of the best known magic tricks are done. The series also features regular segments including Worldly Magic and Tricky History. The show will make its international debut at Mipcom Jr.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Warner Bros. Consumer Products has entered into a deal with retailer Build-A-Bear Workshop, in support of the upcoming Warner Bros.‘ and Village Roadshow Pictures’ animated movie Happy Feet, set for release beginning November 17, 2006. Under the deal consumers will be able to create their own pre-stuffed 16-inch penguin, based on Mumble, the penguin hero of the movie, at Build-A-Bear Workshop stores from November 9 in North America. In addition to Mumble the store will also offer other pre-stuffed penguin characters from the movie, including 8-inch plush dolls of Gloria, Lovelace, and Ramon. Additional clothing and accessories will also be available.
