Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 25, 2012, and this is your first early morning briefing.
International kid’s channel KidsCo will unveil its new on-air look and graphics, as well as rolling out new content and its new website worldwide in Q1 2013. Among KidsCo’s new programming is the new original series Zuzu and the Supernuffs, which will debut in Q2 2013. Currently in production at Matchbox Pictures (NBCUniversal), Zuzu and the Supernuffs follows the adventures of five furry intergalactic Nuffs who crash land on earth in an old bathtub, where they meet Zuzu, and together the new friends spread their positive energy. KidsCo inked a content deal with Matchbox Pictures earlier this year. Additional content from Nelvana, which is owned by KidsCo shareholder and strategic partner Corus Entertainment, is currently being finalized for the channel programming lineup and titles will be announced later this year. KidsCo also recently secured the worldwide rights to Shelldon from Shellhut Entertainment and My Place from the Australian Children’s Television Foundation (ACTF). A joint venture owned by NBCUniversal and Corus Entertainment, KidsCo currently reaches 15 million subscribers worldwide in 18 languages.
SMC Entertainment Group, brand owner of the new 3D CGI animated The Jungle Book TV series, as well as licensing and merchandising, home entertainment and promotional rights for North America, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, names Sun-Mate Corporation as the master toy licensee for these same territories. Under the master toy deal, Sun-Mate will hold design, manufacturing, and distribution rights to The Jungle Book toy line, which will feature a range of toys including articulated action figures, figures and play sets, collectibles, watches, adventure toys, youth electronics, walkie talkies and other novelty toys. Sun-Mate will preview its The Jungle Book toy line at the Dallas Toy Show this fall.
American Greetings Properties (AGP) and MediaLink, AGP’s international licensing agent in Asia, complete new licensing deals for Care Bears in the region. KT International will expand the Care Bears presence in China launching a new line of apparel, accessories and housewares – with products available for holiday 2012. VL&M, the first Care Bears licensee in Thailand, will launch apparel lines for infants, kids and teens in Q4 2012.
In other news, AGP teams with French designers to create unique outfits for Strawberry Shortcake dolls (known in France – Charlotte aux Fraises) that will be showcased at l’Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture (the School of the Union Chamber of Couture) during Paris Fashion Week (September 25-October 12). Designers participating in this program include Sonia Rykiel, Stella Cadente, Cacharel, Antik Batik, Fifi Chachnil and Nathalie Garcon. The deal was put together by CPLG, which is AGP’s licensing agent in France. The dolls will be auctioned off with the proceeds donated to the Ce Ke du Bonheur Organization, which aims to help improve the quality of life for kids in hospitals across France.

Poptropica, the kid-targeted virtual world, celebrates its fifth birthday this month by inviting kids to play its new fifth birthday balloon-pop game (www.poptropica.com/birthday/fifth-birthday.html) to try and win a commemorative firework birthday cake costume for their Poptropicans. Created by Jeff Kinney, author of the bestselling Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series, Poptropica debuted in September 2007 with one simple Island, and today has nearly 30 Islands, each with its own story and adventures. Poptropica is visited each month by 8+ million kids. Earlier this year, the site released its new social network feature, Poptropica Friends (www.poptropica.com/about/friends-tour.html), which allows kids to safely connect in the game. To date 60+ million friends have been added without personal information being shared or collected.
Make Way for Noddy debuts on Sprout (US), the 24-hour preschool targeted channel today under a new deal between with Classic Media. Make Way for Noddy joins Sprout this morning with a three-hour marathon beginning at 9a, during its the Sunny Side Up Show. Make Way for Noddy will then air every day at 9a. Additionally, Noddy videos, games and coloring sheets are available at SproutOnine.com (www.sproutonline.com).
Millimages signs two new broadcast deals for the animated preschool series Mouk (62×11) in Canada with TVO (English language channel) and TFO (French language channel). Millimages recently completed deals for Mouk across Scandinavia, including TV2 (Denmark), TV2 (Norway), MTV3 (Finland), as well as a DVD deal with Svensk. Based on the work by Marc Boutavant, Mouk is commissioned by France Televisions and Disney Channel UK, and is currently airing on ABC (Australia), France 5 and Disney Channels (the UK, Scandinavia, Spain, Eastern Europe and the Middle East). The series will also roll out soon on KiKA (Germany), Disney Italy, Benelux and Asia, ERT (Estonia), RTV (Slovenia) and LTV (Latvia). Millimages holds the international TV and licensing and merchandising rights to the property.
Cookie Jar Entertainment signs on to represent two new live action kid/tween-targeted TV series, Deadtime Stories and The Jadagrace Show, both of which it will showcase at Mipcom next month.
– Deadtime Stories is an anthology series based on the scary (age appropriate) book series of the same name by Annette and Gina Cascone and published by Tor Books, a division of St. Martin’s Press/Macmillan Group, in addition to being carried by Scholastic. The series is produced by Hill & Brand Kids, founded by David and Scott Hillenbrand the two have worked on shows including Spider-Man (animated), Sweet Valley High and Power Rangers.
– The music-based sitcom, The Jadagrace Show (26 episodes) stars Jadagrace as a 12-year-old singer whose amateur videos go viral and a TV channel offers her a variety show. The series is produced through Fun World Media by Joseph Merhi and Kerry Gordy, and is currently in production. In real life Jadagrace is a young singer with a similar story – her music video Gimme My Money has generated 1+ million YouTube views. She recently inked a deal with LA Reid, Chairman/Epic Records, and Sony Entertainment will distribute her albums worldwide. Jadagrace, who was featured in the movie Terminator Salvation (2009), is represented by Kerry Gordy (Motown, Warner Bros.).
Canada’s DHX Media takes the international broadcast and licensing rights for the popular preschool TV property Yo Gabba Gabba! in house. The international rights for the series, which is produced by DHX Media’s subsidiary Wildbrain Entertainment and The Magic Store, were previously managed by Zodiak Rights for the last several years. DHX Media recently bolstered its licensing abilities with the acquisition of Canada’s Cookie Jar Entertainment and its licensing arm CPLG. Yo Gabba Gabba! is currently in its fourth season in the US where it airs on Nick Jr. daily. The series also airs in 50+ territories around the world including with key broadcasters such as Nickelodeon in the UK, Australia and Italy, ABC (Australia), Tiji (France) and Disney throughout Latin America.
The Television Syndication Company (TVS) inks a deal with Me-TV (www.metvnetwork.com) for its tween/teen/family-targeted E/I (educational/informational) series, Travel Thru Time, which will premiere this fall, Saturdays at 10a. Me-TV serves 136 affiliate stations and can be seen in 83% of the US. Co-produced by Red 5 Creative, Islander Entertainment and TVS, Travel Thru History is designed to encourage viewers to get excited and to learn about US history by visiting various destinations. Me-TV launched nationally in December 2010, is owned and operated by Me-TV National Limited Partnership and distributed by MGM Television.
Disney Publishing Worldwide releases the new interactive title Frankenweenie: An Electrifying Book, which is based on Disney’s new stop-motion animated movie from director Tim Burton, Frankenweenie, which releases in theaters October 5, 2012. behind-the-scenes look at the making of the movie. Available for free exclusively on the iBookstore in 32 countries, this book is Disney Publishing’s first to be created with Apple’s iBooks Author. Additionally, Disney Publishing Worldwide has released several print books in support of the new movie, including Frankenweenie: A Cinematic Storybook, Frankenweenie: A Novel, and Frankenweenie: A Monstrous Menagerie of Stickers! A graphic novel and a visual companion will also be available at retail in the coming months.
Shout! Factory, in collaboration with Hasbro Studios and Wizards of the Coast, will release the new DVD, Kaijudo: Rise of the Duel Masters – Creatures Unleashed, this December 4, 2012 in the US and Canada. The DVD features episodes of the action/fantasy animated Kaijudo: Rise of the Duel Masters, which is produced by Hasbro Studios and Wizards of the Coast and features the voice talent of Scott Wolf, Freddy Rodriguez, John DiMaggio, Oded Fehr, Phil LaMarr, David Sobolov, Kari Wahlgren and Jason Marsden
