Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 23, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

This morning in Washington DC the Senate Committee on Appropriations and its subcommittees, Financial Services and General Government and Labor Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies will hold a join hearing titled, Watch What You Eat: Food Marketing to Kids.  The hearing, which was originally scheduled for July 29 2008, will feature two panels of witnesses, including: Director/Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Julie Gerberding; Commissioner/Federal Trade Commission, Jon D. Leibowitz; FCC Chairman Kevin J. Martin; J. Michael McGinnis, Institute of Medicine; Marc Firestone, Kraft Foods; Patti Miller, Children Now; MTV Networks’ Marva Smalls.

Sure Warner Bros. moved the release of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince from this November 2008 to summer 2009, upsetting a oh, just a few fans, per Coming Soon.  But those same fans will probably be happy to know that when Half-Blood Prince is finally released it will feature some 25 minutes of in Imax 3D.  Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will be released simultaneously in regular movie theaters and Imax on July 17, 2009.

Astro Boy, the Summit Entertainment and Imagi Studios CG animated feature film will be released in North America on October 23, 2009.  The international release dates are to be announced soon.  The movie, based on Osamu Tezuka’s manga and anime character Astro Boy, features Freddie Highmore as the voice of the title character as well as the voices of Nicolas Cage, Donald Sutherland, Nathan Lane, Bill Nighy and Eugene Levy among others.

Actor/comedian Fred Willard (Best in Show, A Mighty Wind, Waiting for Guffman, This is Spinal Tap and many others) will host Nick at Nite’s first annual Worldwide Fido Awards on Sunday, October 5 at 8-9p.  The special will feature dogs competing in six categories (e.g. best trick, best voice, dog/owner look-alike etc), and ultimately for an overall winner, and showcase some user generated videos from WorldwideFido.com.  Viewers can now vote for their favorites in all six categories now at www.worldwidefido.com.  The show is sponsored by PetSmart and Bissell.

Ameba, the Winnipeg-based kid-aimed IPTV system, signs a deal with Barcelona’s Sol 90 to distribute the Spanish-language animated history series Great Civilizations on AmebaTV.com.  Targeted to kids/tweens 8-12, Great Civilizations was originally created as a series of 8×32 or 16×16, but will be available for download and streaming in Spanish on AmebaTV.com in various program lengths (e.g. interstitials, full episodes).

France’s Xilam debuts the new animated adventure/comedy series Rahan (26×30) at Mipcom next month.  Targeted to K7-13, Rahan is based on Roger Lecureux’s popular French comic published in the 1960s.  Co-produced by Xilam and Castelrosso Films  (Italy), the series has already been picked up by France 3 and Canal + (France), RAI (Italy) and ZDF (Germany).  Xilam will also showcase the first three episodes of the new family-aimed animated series MrBaby (48×4), which is currently in production in Paris.  France 3 has acquired MrBaby, with further deals to be completed during Mipcom.

Program Call: If your company is attending MIPCOM with programming, we will include a cynopsized MIPCOM international and multicultural and MIP Junior program Shopping List in Cynopsis: International and Cynopsis: Kids the week before the market. So send along only the following info for your top 5 shows: title, availability date, number of episodes, length, type (i.e., movie, series, special, etc.), genre and your terms (barter, cash, etc.). Scholastic hosts Harry Potter Cover to Cover Day, an all day read-a-thon celebrating the 10th anniversary of the US release of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone today (beginning at 8a and through 7p or when the last words are read) at the publishers headquarters in NYC (557 Broadway) and webcast at www.scholastic.com/readharry.  Those in attendance will get a chance to read aloud a passage from HP and the Sorcerer’s Stone, along with celebrities including Marcia Gay Harden and KayCee Stroh (High School Musical 3).  Couple of notes for those who want to read aloud, readers will be chosen on a first come, first serve basis, so – if you want to read aloud I’d suggest getting there ASAP.  Also, because the event is webcast live, those readers under 18 must come with a parent/guardian.  To will also mark the anniversary by publishing a special anniversary edition of the book, which includes an exclusive drawing of Snape and a description both by Rowling, and new book jacket artwork and frontispiece by Mary GrandPre.

Did you say Harry Potter? OK just one more bit of HP news (Marcia, Marcia, Marcia) … Scholastic will release the paperback edition of J.K. Rowling’s final Potter novel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on July 7, 2009, with an initial printing run of 2 million copies.  The hardcover edition of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was released on July 21, 2007, and since then has sold 14 million copies.
