Good morning, it’s Tuesday, September 21, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here.
This may be a bit disturbing for Pay TV providers: more than one third of Netflix subscribers aged 25 to 34 substitute the streaming/DVD rental service for a cable or satellite package and nearly 30% of 18-24 year olds use Netflix’s Watch Instantly service instead of subscribing to Pay TV, according to a new Credit Suisse survey cited on CNBC’s Fast Money. Overall, some 17% of Netflix’s customers say they’re substituting it for cable. Meanwhile, streaming media services are beginning to look to oversees to expand their empires: Amazon is in talks to acquire the portion of Lovefilm, Europe’s version of Netflix, it doesn’t already own for over $300 million, per London’s Sunday Times, while Netflix is expected to launch its Canadian streaming-only service on Wednesday.
Apple is pushing hard to convince newspaper and magazine publishers to begin offering exclusive subscriptions for the iPad rather than simply release editions of an app that users have to purchase each month, per the WSJ. The company is apparently asking for it standard 30% of the subscription revenue, which early supporters such as the Journal and The Financial Times have been able to avoid by signing up subscribers directly. A subscription offering for the iPad could launch as soon as the next couple of months.
VH1‘s announced a new interactive dance competition show that asks wannabe contestants to strut their stuff in front of their webcams. “Dance Cam Slam,” premiering Tuesday, Oct. 26 at 10 pm, asks viewers to choose the winner during the final round via the web or texting to determine which rug cutter wins the weekly $5,000 in prize money.
Digital complements to this season’s Dancing With the Stars on ABC.com include backstage video content and a live chat module enabling fans to interact with one another during the telecast. “Backstage” videos will be available on ABC.com, Hulu, YouTube and ABC Mobile.

The plethora of competing ad formats and solutions vying to stake a claim in the web-enabled TV space is likely to slow adoption as advertisers take a wait-and-see approach, reports the WSJ. Consequently, competitors seem prepared to be patient; Google says it will wait at least a year to place ads next to its search product on the upcoming Google TV platform. Sony is embedding viewable video search within its TVs, Blu-ray players and PS3 consoles and also hopes to sell ads next to search results.
CBS is partnering with Yahoo to promote its fall line-up with an ambitious takeover of Yahoo’s home page, email service, mobile home page and Yahoo Messenger application. CBS will also become the first advertiser to utilize Yahoo!’s new rich media Magazine ad format via a buy on Yahoo’s women’s lifestyle channel, Yahoo Shine. The campaign will run throughout much of the week.

Many smartphone users are sharing their device with their kids to allow them to play games or listen to music and a certain sector of parents have really embraced mobile apps for their kids, according to a new NPD Group survey of over 1,000 parents and kids. A majority of devices have fewer than 20 apps downloaded on them for children, but some 10% of users reported having more than 60. Music downloads were the most popular, followed by games and videos. Some 82% of apps downloaded for children were free of charge, but those who have purchased an app for their kids say they’d be willing to spend almost twice as much, with the amount increasing with the age of the child.
Tagging and tracking online ad campaigns continues to be an inexact science as 99 out of 100 ad executives surveyed reported problems with ad pixel/tag implementation and management that are costing websites traffic and sales, according to survey conducted by tag management vendor TagMan. The implications of tag management issues among respondents included loss of campaign performance data (65%), delays in the launch of a new campaign (63%), delays in the use of a new marketing technology (58%), loss of website traffic (31%) and loss of website sales (28%).

The BlackBerry app allows user to manage multiple accounts or chat with friends across multiple services including AIM, Yahoo, Google and Facebook.
