  Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 20, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Facebook and Time Warner launch the Stop Bullying: Speak Up Social Pledge App ( www.facebook.com/stopbullyingspeakup ), which encourages kids, parents and educators, and even more specifically bystanders, to pledge to specific actions to stop bullying, while also recruiting others to do the same.  Developed by Tenthwave, a digital marketing and creative services company, the new app, which takes its name from Cartoon Network’s bullying prevention initiative, features greetings and a thank you for your pledge from CNN’s Anderson Cooper, and a Take Action Center that features various tools and resources.  The result of Facebook and Time Warner’s recently announced partnership to work together, and the expansion of their ongoing individual efforts, the app also aims to spur thoughtful conversation on the topic, share information and resources on prevention to bring an end to bullying.  A range of celebrities have already taken the pledge and shared their experiences with bullying.  Additionally, CNN will premieres its second Anderson Cooper 360 Town Hall special on Bullying, Sunday, October 9 at 8p, from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.

LICENSING

Scholastic partners with indie publisher Sourcebooks to make their kid’s titles available via the Scholastic proprietary distribution channels as ebooks on the recently launched Scholastic e-reading app.  The deal will see Scholastic carrying Sourcebook’s bestselling frontlist and backlist kid’s titles on the its Scholastic e-reading app, which captive kids while also helping them become better readers.  Picture books, elementary series, middle grade chapter books and young adult novels will all be available for download onto the new e-reading app through the Scholastic Book Clubs.  Among the first Sourcebooks to be available via the Scholastic e-reading application will be the bestselling Horrid Henry series by Francesca Simon, Dream Big, Little Pig by Kristi Yamaguchi, and the perennial favorite picture book, I Love You More by Laura Duksta.

Osiris Entertainment, an indie film and DVD distributor, completes an output deal with Netflix for a slate of its new and classic titles.  Among Osiris’ kid/family titles that will be available via Netflix are Alpha Bots Christmas, Christmas Classics: Vol. 1, Holiday Favorites Volume 1-5, Miracle on 34th Street, Popeye & Friends, Santa and the Three Bears, Santa Claus, Superman Cartoons, and The Swiss Family Robinson.

FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) is set to release a new line of licensed Rebecca Bonbon products at retail across France for winter 2011, with more releasing in 2012.  Plush toys based on the French bulldog character designed by Yuko Shimizu, who designed Hello Kitty, will release in France at the end of September 2011 in Jouet Club, Relay, Geant, Casino and Super Casino stores.  In addition to the plush line, a kid’s apparel collection will be available, from retailers including Gemo, Chauss-prix, Chauss’expo, Styleco and Intermarche, as well as a line of Rebecca Bonbon mobile phone accessories and laptop cases showcased by Internity.  Rebecca Bonbon apparel for kids and teens will also release this year, as will a footwear line.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Fox will premiere two new animated holiday specials this November 24, 2011.  While not specifically for kids, the evening also features a classic episode of The Simpsons (9:30p), The Fight Before Christmas.

  • Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas (8p) – this new half-hour Ice Age special picks up as the herd is decorating for the holidays.  After Sid destroys Manny’s favorite decorations, Manny convinces Sid he is now on Santa’s naught list.  Upset Sid and some of the others set up for the North Pole to appeal to Santa … where further trouble ensues.  The special features the voices of John Leguizamo, Ray Romano, Seann William Scott, Josh Peck, Ciara Bravo, Queen Latifah, Denis Leary, and as Santa, Billy Gardell.  Directed by Karen Disher, the special, also features the voice talent of Chris Wedge, T.J. Miller and Judah Friedlander.  Twentieth Century Fox and Blue Sky Studios’ new feature film Ice Age: Continental Drift is set for release in theaters in 3D on July 13, 2012.
  • Happiness Is A Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown (8:30p) – an hour-long special featuring the Peanuts as they help Linus separate from his security blanket when his grandmother comes for a visit.  Despite Charlie Brown, Lucy and Snoopy’s “help”, Linus finds that everyone finds security in their own way, and his is his blanket.

Fresh TV, in association with Family Channel (Canada), has begun production on the second season of the live-action comedy Really Me.  Family Channel will premiere the new episodes of Really Me in spring 2012.  Developed and produced by Fresh TV, in association with Family Channel, Really Me is distributed by FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME).  The first season of Really Me currently airs Saturdays/Sundays at 6:30p on Family Channel.

In other Family Channel (Canada) programming news, the network will premiere Disney Channel‘s reality series PrankStars and offer a sneak peek episode of its new comedy Jessie on Friday, September 30, 2011 at 7p and 9p respectively.  The day will also include new episodes of Phineas and Ferb (4p), What’s Up, Warthogs! (4:30p), and Good Luck Charlie (6:30p).  Jesse, a new Disney Channel original series starring Debby Ryan (The Suite Life on Deck), revolves around a Texan teen who moves to NYC to be a nanny for four kids of a high-profile couple.  Jessie will air regularly Fridays at 7p from October 14.

BOO! PBS Kids gets ready for Halloween with new holiday-themed episodes of number of its series October 17-31, 2011.  The Halloween celebration also features the Wild Kratts Predator week of episode premieres October 17-21.  Select full episodes and clips PBS Kids’ Halloween and Predator week will also be available online via PBSKids.org/video and PBSKidsGo.org/video all month.  Additionally, PBS Parents ( www.pbs.org/parents/special/halloween) will offer Halloween resources for parents including on trick-or-treating safety tips and how to make your own Buddy (Dinosaur Train) costume.  Special Halloween-themed programming includes (check local listing for times):

  • Sid the Science Kid – Halloween Spooky Science Special (premiere, October 17)
  • Dinosaur Train – Haunted Roundhouse/Big Pond Pumpkin Patch (premiere, October 20)

  • Wild Kratts Predator Week – Stuck on Sharks (premiere, October 17), Mimic (premiere, October 18), Little Howler (premiere, October 19), and Raptor Roundup (premiere, October 20).

LA-based Waterman Entertainment heads to Mipcom where it will offer four kid’s formats and the teen boy aimed animated series Funki Punki: The Dark Side of Cartoons, which are available for licensing worldwide.  The kid formats are:

  • Young Doctor Dolittle – A new animated series based on the popular Dr. Dolittle books by Hugh Lofting.  Penned by Martin Olson (Phineas and Ferb), the new series follows the adventures of 10-year-old Johnny Dolittle, who is able to speak to monster, and his teenage sister Debbie.  Young Doctor Dolittle is executive produced by Chris Lofting of the Lofting Estate.  Additionally, Waterman will also be offering the international DVD distribution rights to The Voyages of Young Doctor Dolittle, an animated TV special based on the original Dolittle characters, at the market.
  • Patches the Pup & Friends – this preschool series revolves around a curious puppy named Patches and his neighborhood pals as they learn and teach kids life lessons – the show uses narration and music to tell the stories and features real puppies.  The series is written by Carter Crocker (Barney & Friends, The Jungle Book 2, The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh).
  • The Seven Habits of Happy Kids – based on the Sean Covey and Stacy Curtis book of the same name, the animated series aims to educate kids about how to take charge of their own lives and learn about balance as they grow up.  Carter Crocker also writes this series.
  • The Babbles – the show follows five precocious characters who entertain and teach young viewers English words and phrases through their humorous adventures.

Canada’s Wizard Hat Productions will showcase four new kid, tween and family properties at Mipcom next month.

  • Thinkheads (26×30 or 52×11) – An animated series that followed the adventures of the Thinkhead family, an environmentally conscious and creative family who work to make the earth greener while also having fun.  Targeted to K5-7, Wizard Hat is developing the series with TVO Kids (Canada), for its TVOKids block.  Wizard Hat is also creating a digital media component, which will include a website, games and interactive classroom content.
  • Wiley & Grampa’s Creature Features (26×30 or 52×11) – targeted to Boys 6-11, this animated series is based on books by Kirk Scroggs, and revolves around the almost true stores of 10-year-old Wiley, his Gramma and Grampa, his buddy Jubal, and his cat Merle save folks of Gingham County from all forms of creatures, monsters and terrible cafeteria food.
  • Chicken, Pig, Cow (78×7) – a preschool animated series based on the book series by Ruth Ohi.  Focused on the themes of being part of a caring, creative group of friends, the show follows the adventures of three homemade plasticine animals, aka Chicken, Pig and Cow, who live in a Popsicle stick barn.
  • Grim Hill (26×30 and a Halloween special 1×44) – A tween-targeted book inspired series that revolves around 13-year-old Cat Peters, who has been touched by dark Faerie Magic, but has a charmed feather that helps her see the truth when all is not as it seems.  Cat and her friends must keep Grim Hill safe from powerful Faeries who try to infiltrate this small town.  The action adventure series, which combines Celtic myths and faerie lore, also uses humor to help diffuse scary moment.

Guru Studio extends its CGI animated series Justin Time to interactive platforms as it partners with zinc Roe design to create an online and mobile game based on the kid-aimed brand.  The deal sees the creation of three new Justin Time character apps for iPhone and iPad.  The first is the Squidgy app, which is available now, lets kids play with he digital doll version of Squidgy.  Second is the Olive app that celebrates friendship and lets kids take photos of themselves with their favorite series character in different outfits and poses.  Finally, Justin’s new app will focus on adventure and imagination.  Additionally, Guru has launched a suite of web-based games.  The first game just launched on French-language DisneyJunior.ca ( www.disneyjunior.ca ), with others set to be added this year.  The English-language versions of the games will rollout next year.  A second season of Justin Time is currently in production with delivery set for fall 2012, and will bring the series to a total of 52×11.

PBS Kids and The Jim Henson Company launch the new preschool-targeted Sid’s Science Fair app for iPhone and iPod touch.  Based on Henson’s animated preschool series Side the Science Kid, the new app encourages young kids to explore and experience science.  Sid’s Science Fair, which supports PBS Kids’ curricular focus on the core STEM academics (science, technology, engineering and math), features three mini-games that bolster early learning science and math skills:

  • Gabriela’s Collection Inspection – players choose different exploration environments and learn about patterns in natural objects using an interactive magnifying glass
  • May’s Chart It! – kids use charts to explore a set of objects and the organize ten objects on a chart according to a shared trait (e.g. color, shape, orientation)
  • Gerald’s Time Machine – kids learn how different objects (e.g. food, plants) change over time by ordering events in the proper sequence to form a timeline, where players can move forward and backward in time to see the change.
