Cyn opsis: Kids!

09/19/06

Arrr, G’ mornin’ matey. It’s Tuesday, September 19, 2006 and this’ll be yer first early mornin’ Kids! briefing. And if you don’t remember me tellin’ ya this yest’r’dy, today is Talk Like a Pirate Day.

YouTube, Inc. and Warner Music Group Corp. have inked a unique deal under which YouTube will distribute music videos from WMG’s roster of artists as well as behind-the-scenes footage, artist interviews, original programming and other special content. Additionally, YouTube users will be able to incorporate music from WMG’s music catalog into the videos they create and upload onto YouTube.  WMG will be able to authorize the use off its content via YouTube’s advanced content identification and royalty reporting system, set to launch by years end.  YouTube and WMG will share revenue from advertising on both WMG music videos and user uploaded videos that incorporate audio/audiovisual content from WMG’s catalog.

Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group is readying to enfranchise parents/caregivers through its social network website ParentsConnect.com, which debuted last month and moves into its public beta phase this week.  ParentsConnect’s public beta launches with an online ad campaign and sponsors including Nissan North America.  Additionally, the site will feature display advertising as well as contextual, integrated and direct marketing opportunities, which will be sponsored.  OMD handled the media buying and planning for the Nissan/ParentsConnect deal.  The website will also feature Viacom’s newly-acquired website GoCityKids, an online guide to kid/family friendly activities/events, written by local editors across the country, which currently features information about 20 cities.  Like MySpace, users can create their own profile pages, where they can feature photos, messaging, profile, blog, links and the ability to post to discussion forums.  Moderated conversations are tracked and viewable on each individual profile page.  Later this year ParentsConnect will debut ParentsConnect TV that will feature broadband video with user submitted content and user created polls, newsletters etc.  ParentsConnect.com is expected to have its full out launch in 1Q 2007.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Earthworks Entertainment has completed an agreement with movie distributor Kindred Media for the release of a Z-Force feature, based on its animated action-adventure property.  Under the pact Z-Force will be released in 35+ US cities in or around February/March 2007, with a strategy to increase its distribution should consumers demand it.  This past June 2006, Earthworks inked a deal with Empire International Merchandising Corporation, a kid home video company, to distribute Earthworks’ animated series Z-Force on DVD/home video in Asia, marking Earthworks’ first commercial deal for its Z-Force merchandise licensing property.  Z-Force is a fantasy/adventure story that revolves around a group of average teens who discover they have the ability to shape-shift into one of 12 super-heroes, each representing one of the characters of the Chinese/Asian Zodiac.

J.R.R. Tolkien’s son, Christopher Tolkien, has spent the last 30 years completing The Children of Hurin, a book started by his father in 1918, but never finished by the Sr. Tolkien, according to the Associated Press.  The book will be published in the US by Houghton Mifflin and in the UK by HarperCollins in spring 2007.  The younger Tolkien, who by the way is 82 years-old, has written and edited several books related to his father’s works, notes and other writings including The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, and The History of Milddle-earth, a 12 volume work.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Polara Productions’ kid targeted series, Nanna’s Cottage, has been picked by Trinity Broadcasting Network, which will air the series Saturday mornings beginning October 7, 2006.  The live action series features a 75 year-old grandmother, a world traveler and archaeologist, who tells stories and imparts wisdom to her granddaughter and her friends.  Nanna’s Cottage was developed for mainstream TV and does not contain religious content.  Nanna’s Cottage was co-created by series executive producer/writer Davey Porter and co-producer/writer Karen Sponsler-Porter, who are also the founders of Polara Productions.  Polara Productions co-produces the series, in Hi-Def, with Chambers Productions in Eugene, Oregon.  Nanna’s Cottage also airs weekly on kid’s targeted Smile of a Child network, which a subsidiary of TBN.

This month marks King Features Syndicate and Safety4Kids‘ roll-out of the new mixed puppet/animation/live-action preschool series, SeeMore’s Playhouse (13 x 30 min), on public television.  Focused on educating young kids about basic safety related issues, the series stars SeeMore The Safety Seal, and features music and storylines that underline the importance of safety of all kinds.  Each episode focuses on a specific safety, health or lifestyle topic.  King Features Syndicate will support SeeMore’s Playhouse with a licensing and merchandising program, which will include developing products for kids/families that reinforce good safety, empowerment and healthy lifestyle messages.  Initially, King Features is looking to establish deals in categories including apparel and accessories; DVDs, music and entertainment; food and beverage; footwear; health and wellness; gifts and party goods; publishing; toys and interactive games.

As part of its Rescuing Recess initiative, Cartoon Network and 13 kid advocacy groups including the National Parent Teacher Association, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Education Association kicked off the first annual National Recess Week yesterday in Atlanta.  The goal of the week is to underline the importance of recess as part of the school day and encourage parents to volunteer to be ‘recess monitors.’  Leading by example, adult volunteers (parents, educators, community members) will serve as recess monitors in 4,600+ cities nationwide this week.  A new recess themed episode of Codename: Kids Next Door entitled Operation R.E.C.E.S.S, can be seen online at CartoonNetwork.com beginning today, and will bow on the network this Friday, September 22, 7:30p.  Rescuing Recess is part of Cartoon Network’s overall Get Animated initiative to get kids active, involved and leading healthy lives.

Correction :  Yesterday’s ad for Cinegroup’s What’s With Andy, had a typo in the hyperlink.  It should have read www.cinegroupe.com/whatswithandy. Go ahead, check it out!

Under its Let’s Just Play banner to get kids up, out and playing, Nickelodeon will host its third annual Worldwide Day of Play on September 30, when the network will go dark for three hours (12n-3p).  Similarly, this year Nickelodeon’s digital networks, Nicktoons Networks and Nick G.A.S., will also go off air for the same time period.  The Let’s Just Play Go Healthy Challenge and health oriented messaging will be featured throughout the day on air and on Nick.com and TurboNick will feature health centric messaging, on-air spots and PSAs.  The day will also serve as the kick-off for the 2007 challenge.  The Let’s Just Play Go Healthy Challenge is a joint effort of Nickelodeon, the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, an initiative between the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation and the American Heart Association.  Nick’s Worldwide Day of Play TV programming and non-programming:

  • 12n-3p: Nickelodeon, Nicktoons Network and Nick G.A.S.
  • 3-7:30p: Nickelodeon returns to air and will run interstitial wraparounds, featuring the four Go Healthy Challengers, during a SpongeBob SquarePants marathon.
