Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 18, 2012, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Rainmaker Entertainment Inc. announced that it has ended its agreement announced earlier this year with Xing Xing Digital Corporation, the Chinese digital animation studio.  The deal would have made the Vancouver-based Rainmaker Studios Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Xing Xing.  According to details of the announcement, the companies were unable to close the deal prior to the September 14,2012 deadline despite board approval of the deal. No further details were given on why the deal was axed. Rainmaker is currently in production on the 2013 feature film for the Weinstein Company Escape From Planet Earth for the Weinstein Company along with DVD’s for Mattel and its own original content.

LICENSING

Warner Bros. Consumer Products announces several global licensing and merchandising partnerships for the upcoming Peter Jackson-helmed, Hobbit trilogy. New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) are production partners on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and The Hobbit. The new line of Lego sets for the Hobbit were revealed with much fanfare at this year’s Comic-Con. These sets will be available this Christmas. Vivid Group, along with co-master toy partner The Bridge Direct, will launch a range of collectibles including mini collectible figures, basic action figures, adventure packs, beast packs, playsets and highly detailed collector figures along with a role-playing line. Ravensburger adds 2D and 3D puzzles and card games and Rubie’s Costume Co. will produce a costume line. HarperCollins Publishers are launching the official tie-in books and global licensee Eaglemoss will be releasing figurine and chess collections.

MARKETING

NASCAR driver Casey Mears and Disney/Pixar’s successful boys franchise, Cars have partnered to kick off the Cars Take Flight family experience at Chicagoland Speedway this past weekend. At the speedway, featured were Cars themed pit stops, a life-size Lego replica of Lightning McQueen (made of 250,000 bricks), a puzzle building station, story time and video games. Also on display was the new collection of die cast cars from the Take Flight collection. This new event is in celebration of the world television premiere of the Cars Toons short films Air Mater and Moon Mater this fall on Disney Channel, and the launch of a new Cars Take Flight product collection.

MORE KIDS STUFF

To celebrate its 20th birthday on Saturday, October 1, 2012, Cartoon Network is planning quite the party. On that Saturday, birthday episodes of all its current and classic series will be featured all day, culminating in the premiere of and original music video at 6:58p EST featuring music from Mad Decent and shows over 100 cartoon stars from the 20 years the network has been on air. Later that night, it’s 100th episode of Adventure Time at 730p EST and an all-new episode of the Emmy-Award winning Regular Show at 8pEST.  The party continues into the following weekend and all month when the network airs the programs that fans have selected in various categories at CartoonNewtork.com.

In time for this fall’s MIPCOM, Paris-based PGS Entertainment has agreed to global distribution of several A Squared Entertainment (A2E) children’s properties, including the animated feature, Stan Lee’s Mighty 7 and series Martha & Friends, featuring Martha Stewart, The Secret KidVenture Club, starring billionaire Warren Buffet, Gisele & the Green Team, about environmentally conscious supermodel superheroes and the pre-school vehicle series Rainbow Valley Heroes. Stan Lee’s Mighty 7 was created by and stars Stan Lee, and will be the pilot for a 26-episode series.

In more MIPCOM news, Millimages, the European production and distribution company launches its brand new series, Me and My Robot (52 x 13) at the market. The animated school-based series is a co-production between Millimages, Synergy Media and Canal J. and is ready for air in 2013 and originally commissioned by France Television, Canal J and EBS and with pre-sales in place with ABC Australia, SVT Sweden, NRK Norway, DR Denmark and VRT Belgium. Millimages handles worldwide television and licensing rights to the property excluding Asia which is represented by Synergy Media. Joining Me and My Robot at MIPCOM this year is Series 4 of 64 Zoo Lane. Commissioned by CBeebies in the UK and France 5, and now totals (104 x 11). Presale deals have been made with ABC Australia, SVT Sweden, NRK Norway, DR Denmark and Zeppelin Holland. Millimages has worldwide rights to the show and has secured a deal with BBC Worldwide for global licensing rights for the property, excluding the French-speaking World.

Tracy Beaker’s legacy continues into 2013 with The Dumping Ground the latest CBBC series set in Tracy’s former home. The series (13 x 30) will feature the ensemble cast of kids who have been with Tracy over the last several years now letting them be in the center of all the drama, friendships and challenges of living in a group home. Though Tracy has moved on, many familiar faces such as Lily, Carmen, Frank, Gus and a slew of new kids join the cast.

Nickelodeon will expand its reach throughout Eastern Europe with a raft of new deals announced by Viacom International Media Networks. 2X2, the Russian free-to-air network has taken on The Avatar spin-off, The Legend of Korra. NTK in Kazakhstan signed up for a Nickelodeon branded block to include episodes of many Nick hits like iCarly and Big Time Rush. Romanian channel CME has taken SpongeBob SquarePants and other pre-school programming. Macedonia’s MRTV, Lithuania’s LNK and Markiza in Slovakia all have also signed on for Nick branded blocks. In the Ukraine, STB has signed up T.U.F.F. Puppy, Planet Sheen and Fanboy & Chum Chum while Baltic broadcaster Viasat takes a relicense on Penguins of Madagascar and signs on for Planet Sheen, T.U.F.F. Puppy and The Troop. In related Nick News, the Riki Group of St. Petersburg Russia have been named master licensee for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for Russia, CIS and the Baltic countries. Riki also represents other Nick properties in the region.

Reed Midem’s MIPJunior is launching Digital Kids!, a full-day conference program dedicated to covering digital age content for kids during the MIPJunior international showcase for children’s programming (October 6-7). The one-day forum will bring together creators from the worlds of web and social media along with producers, broadcasters and publishers to discuss topics centering on entertainment in the digital age. During this inaugural event, a number of high profile executives will be on hand such as Misha Lyalin of ZeptoLab (Cut the Rope), Josh Selig of Little Airplane Productions (Small Potatoes) and Andy Heyward of A Squared Entertainment to discuss a wide variety of topics that center on the digital era such as creation, funding, teens and social media. Other sessions will cover new digital funding sources and the apps business.
