Versus will have its own version of E! Entertainment’s The Soup franchise on its network. Sports Soup will begin October 14 at 10p and will be produced by the same team doing The Soup. Shot in Los Angeles, Sports Soup will air twice weekly on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Comedian Matt Iseman, who also hosts Clean House on Style Network, will host the 30m humorous look at the world of sports.

Bio Channel will profile female officers in its new original series Female Forces beginning October 5 at 10p. During each of the thirteen one-hour episodes, produced by The Greif Company, viewers will ride along with some of the 18 female officers employed by the Naperville, IL Police Department.

MTV’s video countdown show Total Request Live (TRL) will soon exit the network, according to the AP. After ten years, TRL executive producer, Dave Sirulnick (son of the enigmatic Sid Sirulnick) said the show will end with a two-hour special on an as yet unconfirmed Saturday afternoon in November. Dave also indicated TRL may not be gone forever but the timing was right for the series to call it quits in its current form.

History and ghost buffs will want to take note of this one: Travel Channel will broadcast live over seven hours for a special Most Haunted Live: Gettysburg on October 10 starting at 8p. The team, headed by presenter Yvette Fielding will conduct an in-depth paranormal study at five locations on the historic Civil War battlefield, attempting to communicate with the supernatural. In addition, the program will be interactive as viewers can visit the network’s website at www.travelchannelcom/mosthaunted for several participatory activities such as watching eight webcams streaming live to the website.

Okay Mad Men fans — this one’s for you.  This week’s episode on AMC is going to be a repeat because really, who wants to air a first run episode up against the Emmy Awards?  The next original episode, #6, is now slated for September 28, and off of that pushes back the season finale to October 26.  Set your Tivos.

According to Nielsen, The Weather Channel’s coverage of Hurricane Ike reached a cume of more than 62 million viewers during September 12-13.

Rainbow Media introduces Sundance Selects a new on-demand product offering feature films and documentaries. The new service will be available to cable and satellite operators in first quarter 2009.

SOAPnet now reaches more than 70 million U.S. households as of this past August, based on totals from Nielsen. The network increased by nearly four million homes since August 2007.

The Africa Channel will launch in the New York metro area this Thursday on Time Warner Cable’s New York City Region. This system launch will add 1.1 million digital subscribers to the network’s distribution.

As of October 1, Fox Soccer Channel will be rated by Nielsen. The network has more than 33 million cable and satellite subscribers in the U.S. and Caribbean. 

Nielsen released a report saying product placements in primetime programming decreased overall by approximately 15% during January-June 2008 on the 11 measured broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, MNT, NBC) and cable (A&E, Bravo, HGTV, MTV, TLC). Based on Nielsen Product Placement Service, product placements did increase by nearly 12% on broadcast television networks but sharply fell by 20% on the cable networks. Combined on the 11 measured networks, there were 204,919 brand placements during the first half of this year and the primetime program that had the most was FOX’s American Idol with 4,636 occurrences followed by NBC’s The Biggest Loser with 4,364.

Universal Sports Network, a partnership between NBC Sports and InterMedia Partners, added nine new television markets to its roster, taking the distribution level to more than 30 million TV households. The markets with Universal Sports Network include: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose, Washington, D.C., San Diego, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Hartford and New Haven, Omaha and Las Vegas. To commemorate these market additions, the network will air an encore presentation of NBC Universal’s coverage of the 2008 Beijing Olympics starting this week through the end of September.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

FOX’s next project is a 60m medical drama from Ian Biederman (Shark), reports Variety. The plot is about a female heart surgeon who also is schizophrenic. 20th Century Fox TV, who has a current overall deal with Biederman, and Imagine TV are producing.

SCI FI Channel tapped Trey Farley as host of Cha$e, a real-life video game tag competition show that opens November 11 at 10p. During six one-hour episodes, contestants go on a hunt for cash prizes throughout Los Angeles, trying to avoid the hunters who are chasing them. The last participant “alive” will win up to $50,000. Buena Vista Productions and Realand Productions are producing.

Faith & Values Media, the coalition of Christian, Jewish and Muslim faith groups involved in media production, distribution and promotion changed its name to Odyssey Networks. Odyssey will now become more of a multi-platform distribution entity and will continue to produce and distribute television content through its subsidiary Lightworks Enterprises which encompasses Lightworks Program Distribution, Lightworks-KPI Productions and Lightworks Pictures. The latter division will develop and produce independent theatrical movies. Odyssey Networks will also continue to program two hours weekly on Hallmark Channel through 2009.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORYThe day the sky almost fell in on Wall Street electronics superstore Best Buy agreed to acquire the company often blamed for almost killing the music business. Napster was had for $121 million or $2.65/share, nearly twice its closing price on Friday. Best Buy plans to leverage the online subscription music service to sell complementary digital products to consumers and whittle away at iTunes’ dominant 70% market share of the digital download market. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: When DreamWorks Animation releases Kung Fu Panda on DVD/Blu-ray on Sunday, November 9, it will do so packaged with a new companion story, Secrets of the Furious Five.  The two titles are being released together in a Pandamonium Double Pack ($25), marks the first time DreamWorks has released a movie on DVD/Blu-ray with an all new adventure.  Secrets of the Furious Five goes into the back-stories of the Kung Fu Panda characters and features the same celebrity voices as the movie.  The Sunday release of the family titles will be supported through promotional partnerships with companies including Carl’s Jr./Hardees, Chuck E. UNIV came on strong the first two hours as Al Diablo con los Guapos won at 8p with 2.1/7 and Fuego en la Sangre at 9p ranked #1 with 1.9/6, besting the season premiere of Don’t Forget the Lyrics! on FOX in second place at 1.7/5. ~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Susan Lyne, formerly of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia and ABC Entertainment, is now CEO of Gilt Groupe an e-commerce company that sells upscale products online at a discount, reports THR. Susan replaces former CEO/Founder Alexis Maybank who will become CSO.

Titan Worldwide hired Megan Andrews as National Account Manager for the company’s sales team. Previously, Megan worked as VP for Generation Outdoor.

Damona Resnick-Hoffman joined the SCI FI Channel as Director/Alternative Programming. Damona will be part of the development group that oversees the network’s unscripted reality programming that includes the franchise Ghost Hunters. She will report to Mark Stern, EVP/Original Programming, SCI FI and Co-Head/Original Content, Universal Cable Productions.

Warner Premiere upgraded Matt Bierman to SVP/Production where he will continue to work with President, Diane Nelson to engineer the company’s direct-to-DVD creative platform. Additionally, Matt is responsible for the made-for-DVD feature slate.

Critical Mass, a digital marketing agency and division of Omnicom, added to its creative team in Chicago by recruiting Jon Andexler as Creative Director; Vanessa Donley as Art Director; and Rina Mallick as Associate Creative Director.

David Stone is the new VP/Development at Buena Vista Productions. David is charged with developing non-scripted programming in the categories talk, game, reality and more for primetime, cable and first-run syndication. He will also concentrate directly on development for SOAPnet and other ABC-Disney entities as well as work overseas with Sweden-based Silverback, managing its first-look development deal with BVP. David will report to Ann Lewis Roberts, SVP, Buena Vista Productions and SVP/Alternative Programming and Development, SOAPnet.

Tribune Company appointed Phil Waterman as VP/GM of WGNO-WNOL/New Orleans. Phil will take the reins of the duopoly starting September 29. Most recently, Phil managed four stations in Baton Rouge as Group VP for Communication Corporation of America.
