Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 16, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

When DreamWorks Animation releases Kung Fu Panda on DVD/Blu-ray on Sunday, November 9, it will do so packaged with a new companion story, Secrets of the Furious Five.  The two titles are being released together in a Pandamonium Double Pack ($25), marks the first time DreamWorks has released a movie on DVD/Blu-ray with an all new adventure.  Secrets of the Furious Five goes into the back-stories of the Kung Fu Panda characters and features the same celebrity voices as the movie.  The Sunday release of the family titles will be supported through promotional partnerships with companies including Carl’s Jr./Hardees, Chuck E. Cheese, ConAgra (Chef Boyardee, Hunt’s Snack Packs, Cheff Pizza Kids, Peter Pan), Energizer, Hubba Bubba, Kellogg’s and Bank of America.


Porchlight Entertainment partners with Chile-based Pascualina Producciones to develop a 2D animated series based on the tween-targeted Pascualina diary book series created/illustrated by Paulina Monckeberg.  Porchlight will serve as the worldwide distributor for the series, which will also be produced at Porchlight’s animation studio in LA.  Targeted to K6-12, the series will revolve around Pascualina and her eccentric family and their travels and the animation will reflect the hip “doodled” look featured in the diaries. 

The Walt Disney Company CIS joins with some of Russia’s top filmmakers for the kid/family-targeted movie The Book of Masters, an adaptation of Russian fairy-tales.  Production began earlier this month in Russia first outside of Minsk, then moving to the Mosfilm Studio stages.  Directed by Vadim Sokolovsky, Nikita Mikhalkov’s Three T Studio is the production company for The Book of Masters.


Disney Channel will feature its new preschool series Imagination Movers in a six-hour marathon this Saturday, September 20 (6a-12p).  The marathon will features the premiere of a new episode at 10a).

Cartoon Network’s Boomerang hosts the Super Friends marathon on Saturday, September 27, 6a-7p.  The marathon will feature 30 episodes from four animated series starring characters from the DC Comics universe that starred in spin-offs from the original series Super Friends (1973/ABC), including from The Challenge of the Super Friends (1978/ABC), The World’s Greatest Super Friends (1979/ABC), Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show (1984/ABC), and The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians (1985/ABC).

Season three of Fetch! With Ruff Ruffman (20 new episodes) debuts this fall on PBS Kids Go! on Monday, September 29 (check local listings).  The mixed animated/live-action series features a new set of tween contestants facing 30+ science-themed challenges.  Also new this season is Ruff’s new assistant Chet, a mouse, takes over for Blossom von Yum Yum, who was recently promoted to Ruff’s supervisor.  Produced by WGBH Boston, Fetch! With Ruff Ruffman is funded in large part by the National Science Foundation and public TV viewers.  Corporate funding for the series is provided by Greendog.

In other PBS Kids Go! news, kids in on the election process with a day of election-themed programming on Election Day, Tuesday, November 4 (check your local listings), including a new episode of WordGirl, and online content.  In the WordGirl episode Becky Botsford runs for student council president, as her alter ego, WordGirl, works to thwart the evil doings of Tobey and his robots.  Also featured will be episodes of Arthur, Cyberchase and more WordGirl.  Additionally, www.pbskidsgo.org is offering resources where kids can find out more about the Electoral College, facts and other kid-friendly information related to the upcoming election, including Zoomout of the Vote, The Democracy Project, and America Experience WayBack.  Parents/caregivers can find information that will help answer kid’s election questions at www.pbsparents.org , while educators can head to PBS Teachers Vote 2008 for lesson plans, activities/RSS feeds and podcasts and various media tools. 

9 Story Entertainment completes broadcast deals in Canada with TVO and Knowledge Network for the new preschool-targeted animated series Wibbly Pig.  Commissioned by Cbeebies, Wibbly Pig is based on the eponymous picture books by author/artist Mark Inkpen, who is also well known for his Kipper the Dog series.  A joint production with the UK’s Wish Films, Wibbly Pig is set for a spring 2009 delivery, the series will be distributed by both 9Story and BBC Worldwide, with 9Story handling distribution in North American and Latin America and BBC WW handling all other international distribution.

Contender Entertainment Group (Peppa Pig) inks a broadcast deal with Nickelodeon UK for its new preschool animated series Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom (52×11).  Featuring the voices or real kids as the main characters, Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom revolves around Princess Holly, a young fairy learning how to use her powers, and her best friend Ben, an elf.  Currently in production, the series will air across 43 of Nickelodeon’s international channels including in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Middle East and Latin America beginning in 2009.  The series is being animated by the Astley Baker Davies studio.

BRB International‘s short-form HD 3D animated series The Imp (65×90 seconds) premieres on MTV in Portugal.  MTV will air The Imp daily at 9p, premiering three new episodes each week.  The Imp is a co-production between Red Kit Animations, Screen 21, and Televisio de Catalunya.

Chorion, Penguin Group (USA) and Egmont UK will launch a publishing tie-in program to support TV series The Mr. Men Show in spring 2009.  Under the plan, Price Stern Sloan, a division of Penguin Young Readers Group and Egmont UK will produce a range of books based on the TV series.  Of course The Mr. Men Show has its roots in publishing, as it is based on Roger Hargreaves’ popular Mr. Men and Little Miss books.  The new line of tie-in books will debut with 8X8s, readers, sticker stories, and other formats.  The Penguin Group (USA) Inc. holds the English language publishing rights to the Mr. Men and Little Miss and the Mr. Men Show, with Egmont publishing the books in the UK and Commonwealth.  Penguin will publish the new line of books in Australia

Geoff Johns, the writer who has worked on a range of DC Comics (e.g. Green Lantern, Action Comics and Justice Society of America), has been tapped to write the saga of the DC Universe Online (DCUO) massively multiplayer action game from Sony Online Entertainment (SOE).  In a first, Johns will collaborate on the project with noted comic artist Jim Lee.  DCUO is currently in development by SOE in collaboration with DC Comics and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment for release for Playstation3 and PC
