Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 14, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

A Nickelodeon-branded programming block is set to launch in the Ukraine for the first time, under a new multi-year deal between MTVN International and StarLightMedia Group.  The agreement, which includes 800×30 localized animated episodes of Nickelodeon programming, will see the branded block air daily in the Ukraine on cable channel QTV, and weekends on STB, a terrestrial broadcaster.  Both QTV and STB are part of the StarLightMedia Group.  The localized Nickelodeon programming set to air in the Ukraine includes episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants, The Penguins of Madagascar, and Rugrats and Back at the Barnyard.

Breakthrough Films & Television marks its 25th anniversary with a company rebrand as Breakthrough Entertainment ( www.breakthroughentertainment.com ).  The Breakthrough Entertainment brand will now serve as the banner for Breakthrough’s three entities including the production division (f/k/a Breakthrough Films & Television), worldwide distribution division and digital entertainment (f/k/a Breakthrough New Media).

MORE KIDS STUFF

Little Airplane Productions inks a deal for its new short-form animated music-focused series Small Potatoes (26×3) with Disney Channel’s Playhouse Disney.  Focused on a band of singing potatoes, the series aims to introduce preschoolers to a wide range of music genres.  Created by Josh Selig, founder/President Little Airplane, Small Potatoes will feature music by noted composers and lyricists including Jerry Bock (Fiddler On The Roof) and Michael John LaChiusa (Marie Christine).  The music for the series is produced by studio’s Musical Director, Jeffrey Lesser. The agreement joins other pre-sale pacts for the multiplatform preschool series, which include CBeebies (UK), NRK (Norway), SVT (Sweden), ABC TV (Australia), and in Canada with TVO and Knowledge.  Additionally, ABC Commercial has just finalized a deal for the Australian music and entertainment rights to the property.  Little Airplane Productions will showcase Small Potatoes at Mipcom next month in Cannes.

Random House enters into a partnership with digital developer Smashing Media to create book-based kid-targeted apps for mobile devices.  Random House Children’s Books will work closely with Smashing Ideas’ newly launched ePublishing group, which is led by the co-creator/developer of Alice for iPad, and key Random House kid’s book authors, illustrators and brands to create new apps.

Scholastic acquires Math Solutions, which publisher/provider of math instruction services for teachers of kindergarten-high school, publications and resources.  The terms of deal were not made public.  Operating as a division of Scholastic Education, Math Solutions will work with Scholastic’s new Scholastic Achievement Partners professional services organization to develop further efforts to improve school performance.  Christine Willig will continue to serve as CEO and President of Math Solutions, which was founded by Marilyn Burns who will now act as math education consultant to Scholastic.  Scholastic and Math Solutions previously partnered to create the math intervention program, Do The Math, which supports students that have fallen behind in math.

MARKETING/LICENSING

4Kids Entertainment International completes three new licensing deals for Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s across Europe.  Additionally, to help kick off the 10th anniversary of the Yu-Gi-Oh franchise, the worldwide Yu-Gi-Oh website is set to debut this November at www.yugioh.com, which will also support the 3D film slated to launch in 2011.  Signing on as licensee partners are:

  • Panini will release sticker album collections, sticker packs and sheets and stick and stack activities books, as well as wall calendars across Europe, beginning in Germany, Austria and Switzerland this fall.  The sticker products will then roll out across western and eastern Europe later this year.
  • Giochi Preziosi comes on board to publish the official 5D’s magazine in Italy.  The magazine launches next month and will be available at newsstands and kiosks.
  • Les Livres Du Dragon D’or plans include the release of sticker books, “Look and Find” books and coloring books in France and several French-speaking territories beginning in 2011.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

UK-based Cake Entertainment restructures its executive team, under which Ed Galton becomes CCO and MD, as he also enters ownership of the company alongside Tom van Waveren, CEO and Creative Director.  Galton will oversee business operations and head up Cake’s distribution arm.  Waveren will continue to identify new content and partnerships as well as overseeing production of Cake’s shows.  The move comes on the heels of Genevieve Dexter stepping down as Co-Director and selling off her stake in Cake to Waveren.

Portfolio Entertainment ups Julie Stall to the newly created position of VP/Production.   She will oversee Portfolio’s growing slate of kid’s, lifestyle and factual programming content, as well as building the company’s relationships with producers.  As part of the management team, Stall will work with Portfolio Co-Founders/Co-CEOs Joy Rosen and Lisa Olfman.  Stall has been with Portfolio for 10 years, most recently serving as Head of Animation.  Stall worked with Portfolio’s development team on a number of projects and has piloted two new series, Hood, a tween-targeted comedy/adventure, and the adult-aimed project Chinatown Cops.  She previously toiled as VP/Production at Cambium, where she was part of the producing team for the series Sharon, Lois & Bram’s Elephant Show and Eric’s World.

Gia DeLaney is named VP/Program Sales, American Greetings Properties (AGP), the intellectual property and licensing division of American Greetings.  Most recently, DeLaney was VP/International Program Sales, 4Kids Entertainment.  She previously worked in Acquisitions for Showtime Networks and as an Associate Producer for ABC-TV’s Good Morning America.

Disney Publishing Worldwide names Kevin Lewis as Executive Editor, Disney  Hyperion Books, an imprint of Disney Book Group.  In his new position Lewis is responsible for acquiring and editing picture books, as well as middle grade and young adult novels for Disney-Hyperion.  Most recently, Lewis was Editorial Director, Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, and prior to that as an Associate Editor with Blue Sky Press, an imprint of Scholastic.

Discovery promotes Jocelyn Egan to SVP/Discovery Solutions, and Maria Kennedy to SVP/Advertising Sales, Direct Response, Discovery Communications.  Egan, who had been VP/Discovery Solutions, leads the national team based in NYC that creates and signs large-scale, cross-platform ad sales deals and branded entertainment partnerships.  A 20-year Discovery veteran, Kennedy was most recently VP/Direct Response.  In her new position, she will continue to lead paid programming and direct response sales efforts for Discovery’s US networks.  Kennedy is also based in NYC.

MTV Networks Digital announces a promotion and two new hires to further support its Digital Advertising and Digital Research teams.

  • Michael Greenspan is promoted to SVP/Digital Advertising Operations.  Greenspan, who had been VP/Digital Advertising Operations, will report to Kevin Arrix, EVP/Digital Advertising Sales, MTVN.  He was previously toiled for The New York Times Company, Disney, cablevision, Infoseek and AOL.
  • Rick Bruner is appointed VP, Digital Ad Sales Research.  Bruner will oversee consumer insight, ad effectiveness, and primary research to support MTVN advertisers, while working with the research sales and marketing teams.  He will report to Colleen Fahey Rush, EVP/Strategic Insights and Research, and Heather Hopkins, SVP/Marketing and Sales Development.  Bruner was previously Global Director/Research and Industry Development, DoubleClick, and Head/Advertising Research, North America at Google. 
  • Stuart Schneiderman joins MTVN as Sr. Director, MTVN Digital Research, he will oversee digital research and analysis, and further new consumer research on online video, social media and mobile video.  Schneiderman will report to Fahey Rush.  Most recently, he was Director/Research, Online Publishers Association, and prior to that was Director/Research and Metrics, Associated Press.
