Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 11, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
With the NFL season back in full swing, it didn’t take long for some ratings records to be broken. NBC drew an 18.0 overnight rating for Peyton Manning’s return to action on Sunday Night Football, marking the network’s top regular season overnight rating for a primetime NFL game ever and besting the 2011 number for the same week by 6.5%, according to Nielsen. FOX Sports, meanwhile, drew a 17.2 overnight score for its own national window featuring the 49ers/Packers in most of the markets. That score ranks as a record for the first week of the season for the company. In addition, FOX drew a record 10.2 rating in regional action, anchored by RG3’s win over New Orleans, for a 14.6% climb year-to-year. CBS’ singleheader drew a 10.4 in the overnights for a slight dip of 1.9%.
Facing NFL competition, CBS’ coverage of Serena Williams’ win over Victoria Azarenka in the U.S. Open drew a 3.9 rating Sunday for the network, according to Nielsen. That number is down 7% from last year’s women’s final.
ESPN is turning to Kid Rock for the network’s coverage of the 10 races in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup which begins on Sunday. The musician will narrate and appear in the opening teases of the 10 races, with each tease tailored to the racetrack that hosts that week’s event.
ESPN and ESPN2 will be offering two AL East games simultaneously on Wednesday as the first-place Yankees visit the Red Sox at 7p on ESPN, while ESPN2 carries the Rays/Orioles game at the same time. Dave O’Brien calls the Yankees game with analysts Nomar Garciaparra and Curt Schilling while Sean McDonough joins analysts Aaron Boone and Rick Sutcliffe next door.
CBS Sports announced that its SEC on CBS football game for Saturday, Sept. 22 will feature Missouri/South Carolina. Coverage starts at 3:30p as Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson call the contest.
FOX Sports Media Group also unveiled its matchups for the 22nd slating Oklahoma/Kansas St. at 7p in primetime, marking the first-ever Big 12 regular season game to run on the broadcast network. On FX, the channel’s doubleheader coverage will include West Virginia/Maryland at noon, followed by Colorado/Washington St. at 4p.
World TeamTennis, the coed professional tennis league co-founded by Billie Jean King, locked in a deal with NBC Sports Network to carry the WTT Eastern Conference Championship and the WTT Finals on Sept. 15-16. The channel will air six hours of coverage, as Leif Shiras hosts the WTT broadcasts, joining Luke Jensen.
UFC is adding another December event to the mix, slating UFC on FX 6 for Dec. 14, according to a Tweet from Dana White. The Australia-based bouts will now join UFC on FOX on Dec. 8, and UFC 155 on Dec. 29. The FX card will include Hector Lombard vs. Rousimar Palhares.
NBC Sports will debut the second season of NFL Turning Point, on Wednesday at 10p, the episode will Peyton Manning’s return to the NFL to lead the Broncos to win over the Steelers; Robert Griffin III’s first-game for the Redskins, as well as in-game audio of Michael Vick against the Browns.
EPIX will play host to former WBC, IBO and IBF Heavyweight Champion of the World Hasim “The Rock” Rahman, facing WBA Champion Alexander Povetkin in a 12-round world title fight on Saturday, September 29th. The channel will also offer boxing enthusiasts a closed-captioned simulcast of this world championship clash on its Jumbotron in Times Square in New York City.

NFL Network brought in Lexus to serve as the title sponsor of the halftime show for NFL Network’s Thursday Night Football. The Lexus Halftime Show will originate live from inside the stadium for each game on the channel’s newly expanded 13-game slate and kicks off on Sept. 13 with a Bears/Packers rivalry game. Lexus will also offer a Thursday Night Football Challenge, as well as presenting sponsorships across broadcast, digital and mobile platforms, including NFL.com’s Game Center feature.
David Beckham is once again a champion. MLS is releasing a list of the top selling adidas MLS player jerseys sold via MLSgear.com, MLSgearCanada.ca and MLS club websites for the period spanning March 10 – September 10. The LA Galaxy’s David Beckham took the top spot on the rankings, beating out Thierry Henry of the New York Red Bulls in second place, LA Galaxy’s Landon Donovan, the Seattle Sounders Fredy Montero and the DC United’s Dwayne De Rosario.
International Business Times unveiled the beta version of SportsNet, an online platform for sports fans and enthusiasts around the world to create and share content on sports-related topics. The company described SportsNet as unique in that it is “inherently global and therefore differentiated from traditional sports coverage.” All content on SportsNet will be user-generated and approved by IBTimes’ select editors.
