Cynopsis: DIGITAL
09.10.13
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 10, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Bloomberg BusinessWeek releases HANK: Five Years From the Brink exclusively on Netflix on Sept. 16. The doc, showing the 2008 financial crisis from the perspective of former Goldman Sachs CEO Hank Paulson, debuts from Bloomberg Businessweek Films production company; Academy Award-and Emmy-nominated filmmaker Joe Berlinger directed.
As of Monday, Yahoo Screen video streaming service features eight original web series, the entire Saturday Night Live clip archive, MTV show episode clips and Comedy Central clips including The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report. Yahoo also released its new Yahoo Screen app for Apple mobile devices, which can view the 5000 new clips added to the service.
Apple is unveiling new products at a press event at 10 a.m. PT from Apple headquarters in California. In previous event coverage, live-streams of announcements were available at www.apple.com as well as on Apple TV. Sites like Gizmodo, CNET, Engadget, The Verge and ABC News have plans to live blog the event, which will be available to read through direct sites and twitter feeds. The iPhone 5S, newcomer iPhone 5C, iPad updates and the iOS 7 software are expected to be the big reveals.
Facebook has released two new conversation search tools – but they’re not for everyone. Public Feed API and the Keyword Insights API will serve trusted media partners like BuzzFeed, CNN, NBC’s Today Show, BSkyB and Slate, allowing them to integrate Facebook conversations into broadcasts, and target particular sets of viewers. The Public Feed API will display a real-time feed of public posts for a specific word. The Keyword Insights API allows topic searches on private posts, showing only anonymous demographic data such as geography, gender and age of the user. The social site is pairing with tech company Mass Relavence to help its media clients utilize the new tools; Facebook said it will allow additional partners to utilize the tools in coming weeks.
Google could be joining Yahoo and YouTube with a logo revamp. Ars Technica reports a new logo was slyly unveiled in the latest version of the Chrome browser for Android – it sticks to blue, yellow and green, but appears a bit muted and cleaner.
Apple gets the meatiest buzz – especially as it prepares to launch an array of new products – but it may not sit at the top of the mobile device food chain. Internet tracker StatCounter released research Monday that indicates Samsung is leading the pack in actual global market sales, thanks to its more budget-friendly offerings. Samsung is tops in South America and Western Europe, but even in places like North America, where Apple is king, it places a solid second. In other words: No wonder Apple is releasing a lower-priced iPhone.

Instagram is ready to make some money. The photo-sharing app, purchased last year by Facebook for $700 million, has yet to turn a profit, but director of business operations Emily White tells the Wall Street Journal the company will start selling ads within the next year. In other words: This development should come as no surprise. Brands already use the service to spread their marketing messages, and Instagram has to monetize eventually.

That’s why Cynopsis is presenting a conference on what networks are doing and what they need to do more of to aggressively evolve to compete, and profit in this shifting landscape. Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live and Fiat created an interactive campaign to marry a couple live on the show. Bravo fans can vote online for wedding arrangements, and Fiat will supply a new car as the couple’s wedding gift. The campaign is part of Bravo’s bigger plan to engage viewers through online interaction, and integrate Bravo stars with online video advertisements. The results of the wedding campaign will air on Watch What Happens Live on Oct. 10.
Black Box Wines is encouraging wine drinkers to “lose the bottle” in a cross platform advertising campaign. The effort includes a Facebook contest and humorous online videos on Black Box Wine’s site and YouTube page. The five videos in the series point out the frustrations and dangers of drinking wine from a bottle instead of a box. The Facebook contest, asking fans to vote for a favorite photo showing the company’s products, runs until Sept. 24.
The latest smart watch to rival the Samsung Galaxy Gear comes from… Nissan? The automaker announced its Nismo Watch will include real-time driving data like speed, fuel consumption and engine performance. The watch will have bluetooth, and the ability to “track and rate the user’s social performance across Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram via Nissan’s proprietary Social Speed software.” In other words: A surprise twist in the smart watch market, but without a camera or video component, it’s no match for Galaxy Gear.

DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE DAY
LG is causing a stir not only with its new TV technology, but with a prank style advertisement for the TVs. The commercial depicts real people in a fake job interview, facing what they think is an office window, but is actually a television screen. Suddenly, a meteor enters the screen, and people begin to panic because the image is so lifelike. First posted last Monday on YouTube, the commercial has received more than seven million views. The spot introduces LG’s Ultra HD TV, which is supposed to be the clearest image in the 4K TV market, and four times the image clarity of regular HD TVs. Check out the video at www.cynopsis.com.
