Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 9, 2012, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Tom and Jerry are back at it again in a new series, The Tom and Jerry Show, which will air on Cartoon Network. Sam Register (The Looney Tunes Show, MAD, Teen Titans) serves as executive producer for the new series, which is produced by Warner Bros. Animation in conjunction with producers Darrell Van Citters and Ashley Postlewaite at Renegade Animation. The Tom and Jerry Show is a half hour series (comprised of 2×11 segments), and will find Tom and Jerry trying to outsmart one another as always but this time around it won’t just be in traditional suburban setting. Instead Tom and Jerry’s exploits will take them to all sorts of worlds, from a medieval castle to a mad scientist’s lab.
Saban Brands unveils plans at Mipcom to take its newly acquired Zui.com (www.zui.com) around the world, expanding the availability of the kid-safe online environment and library of kid-aimed content. Saban Brands plans to launch a worldwide network of connected sites, featuring parental controls, and 6 million selections of kid content that can be localized for broadcasters around the world. Saban Brands is offering broadcasters the opportunity to partner with and license Zui.com’s patented technology to enhance their own branded and localized sites. Content available via both Zui.com and KidZui, a downloadable browser, is reviewed and approved by an advisory board of parents and teachers, and added to the company’s proprietary white list. Saban Brands announced its acquisition of Zui last month.
SLR Productions new animated adventure/comedy series, The Skinner Boys (26×30), has been green-lit for production with broadcaster partners Nine Network Australia and SRTL (Germany) along with partners Telegael, Top Draw Animation and Home Plate Entertainment. ZDF Enterprises will distribute the series internationally. The Skinner Boys is based on an original creation by Australian artist Steve Lyons and brings together the creative talents of Melanie Alexander as Script Producer with Jo Boag as Creative Director and first time Animation Director for SLR Productions, Pablo de la Torre. The series is slated for completion by 2014. The series follows the adventures of the Skinner Boys, the three grandsons of the now dead Augustus Skinner. The boys live in his mansion and discover the surprise their Grandfather has bequeathed to them, as they become the Guardians of the Lost Secrets, a collection artifacts around the world that possess unique powers. There’s one other surprise, Grandpa Skinner also appointed a fourth to the team – their spirited teen cousin Tara.

Australia-based Ice Water Press enters into a global e-publishing rights deal for the first season of Pukeko Pictures‘ preschool series, The WotWots. The agreement was brokered by American Greetings Properties (AGP), which serves as a global licensing agent for The WotWots brand. With books available in Australia and New Zealand, this recent deal will also see the publisher release a series of e-books on various global digital e-book platforms.
MARKETING
Spain-based BRB Internacional‘s popular series Dogtanian celebrates its 30th today. A 3D Dogtanian feature film, Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds, is in the works and set for release in 2014. The series made its initial TV debut on Television Espanola (Spain) on October 9, 1982, and has since aired on 100+ channels around the world. The brand continues to be popular today – with thousands of daily iews on YouTube and a presence on Facebook, Twitter, mobile devices and new VOD platforms such as www.BRBPlay.com, where the series can be viewed for free in Spanish and English this week.
Nerd Corps Entertainment will begin production this year on its first preschool property Kate and Mim-Mim (26×22 or 52×11). FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) will have exclusive worldwide distribution and licensing rights outside of Canada. CBeebies (UK) has already ordered the first season of the series, which it plans to debut in 2014. Created by husband and wife team Scott and Julie Stewart and developed by Nerd Corps, Kate and Mim-Mim is a comedy that revolves around the friendship between a feisty 5-year-old named Kate, and her plush toy bunny, Mim-Mim. When Kate travels to the world of her imagination, Mim-Mim grows to 10 times his real size and springs to life as Kate’s loyal friend and co-pilot as they set out on adventures. Nerd Corps and FME are introducing Kate and Mim-Mim to buyers at Mipcom this week.
Cake, a London-based distributor, inks a deal with Cartoon Network US for two holiday specials, Dear Dracula (1×45) and Abominable Christmas (1×45). Produced by Kickstart Productions and Arc Entertainment for Walmart in the US, each special features a celebrity voice-overs including Ray Liotta, Emilio Estevez, Jane Lynch and Matthew Lillard. A Halloween special, Dear Dracula follows young monster fan Sam, who gets more than he bargained for when he writes a letter to Dracula. Dear Dracula will premiere on Cartoon Network US on Tuesday, October 16, at 7p. Abominable Christmas revolves around two Abominable Snowkids in a Colorado mountain town taken in by a local family after being chased out of their hideout by a scientist determined to capture them. With Christmas close, their Dad, the Abominable Snowman, the scientist, and the local Animal Control all try to track the kids down. Cake is at Mipcom 2012 this week showcasing both of these new specials, as well as the second season of Angelo Rules, and the kid-aimed factual series Get Well Soon and Fleabag Monkeyface.
Shaftesbury enters into a distribution deal for the new tween-targeted half-hour series Do-Over from creator/writer/executive producer Michael Poryes (Hannah Montana, That’s So Raven, Life With Boys). Do-Over revolves around Reggie Nichols, a 15-year-old aspiring songwriter who has the enviable ability to turn back the clock by five minutes and “do-over” events in her life as many times as she’d like. Of course, do-overs don’t always make things better. Shaftesbury and ZDF Enterprises will manage distribution of the series.
Italy-based Atlantyca Entertainment inks a deal with Russian animation studio Aeroplane Productions to acquire the distribution rights to the animated series The Fixies (104×6, www.thefixies.com) for Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Malaysia, Singapore and Korea. Created by Aeroplane Productions, The Fixies is produced by Aeroplane, The Riki Group and Petersburg Animation Studio. The Fixies is targeted to K4-9 and follows the misadventures of Tom Thomas and his friendship with Simka and Nolik, the kids of the tiny Fixie family that secretly lives in his apartment fixing the machines and gadgets all around them. Atlantyca is showcasing the popular Russian series at Mipcom this week.
Indie kid’s producer/distributor V&S Entertainment signs two new deals for its HD CGI animated preschool series Everything’s Rosie and a series related special When You Wish Upon An Oak (1×22). RAI YOYO (Italy) acquires the second season of Everything’s Rosie (26×11) and the special When You Wish Upon An Oak, the latter of which is currently in production and set for delivery in 2013. RAI YOYO is expected to broadcast season two of Rosie beginning Q1 2013 across Italy, including the Vatican City, San Marino, the Principality of Monaco, Capodistria and Malta. RTVE (Spain) picks up season three of Everything’s Rosie (26×11) and the special When You Wish Upon An Oak, for CLANTV, its free-to-air kid’s TV channel. The new season of Rosie and the special are currently slated to debut on CLANTV in spring 2013.
KiKA (German) and DHX Media finalize a deal for two series. KiKA, a kid/youth targeted channel, acquires the tween-targeted comedy series How to be Indie and the music-centric preschool series dirtgirlworld, from DHX’s slate. Produced by Canada’s Heroic Film Company, How to be Indie dovetails with KiKA’s channel theme for 2013 or integration and inclusion. How to be Indie was created by writer Vera Santamaria (Degrassi: The Next Generation, Little Mosque on the Prairie, The Latest Buzz and Naturally Sadie) and Heroic executive producers John May and Suzanne Bolch. dirtgirlworld, a mixed live-action, animation with photomontage and illustration with an environmental message, is a co-production between Australia’s mememe and DHX Media.
Sky Vision (f/k/a Parthenon) signs a distribution deal with digital broadcaster Carousel TV (Russia) for the preschool series Norwegian producer CreaCon Group’s City of Friends. Under the pact, Carousel acquires two seasons of City of Friends (52×10), which it will launch later this year and air daily, and two specials (2×30). Targeted to kids/tweens/teens 3-15, Carousel TV is part of Channel One Group and has an audience of 51+ million viewers across the country and abroad. Since its debut on Channel 5’s milkshake! in fall 2011, City of Friends has been to 180+ countries worldwide and translated into 23+ languages. CreaCon will feature the property at Brand Licensing Europe 2012 next week in London.
Aardman Rights is partnering with Kite Entertainment as international distributor for Science Fiction (30×90), a science themed comedy for kids/tweens 8-12. The exclusive deal includes global TV, DVD and publishing rights for the show. A mix of green-screened puppetry, 3D animation and 2D cartoon sketches, Science Fiction is a co-production with RTE (Ireland) and CBBC (UK) where the series is already airing. Aardman Rights debuting Science Fiction to international buyers this week Mipcom. Science Fiction is an irreverent series that explores the world of science and technology and attempts to debunk some of the most common myths in the world of science. Kite Entertainment is currently completing production on a third season of the show, which is.
Komixx Entertainment enters into an exclusive multi-book print and digital publishing pact with Random House Children’s Publishers UK (RHCP) for the stop-frame animated preschool series Toby’s Travelling Circus. Under the deal, RHCP will publish picture books, reader books, activity books, annuals and eBooks in a range of languages. RHCP will work closely with Komixx and other licenses to launch the publishing program for 2014. Produced by Mackinnon & Saunders studios, Toby’s Travelling Circus premiered on Channel 5 milkshake! (UK) in September 2012.
Ameba (www.amebatv.com), a kid’s streaming TV provider, enters into a digital distribution partnership with Canadian producer/distributor Bejuba! Entertainment. Under the deal, Bejuba’s properties The Big Comfy Couch, the new CGI series Musti and the mixed live-action/puppet preschool series Sooty will be available via Ameba. Ameba, which is available on 5+ million Internet-connected consumer electronics devices throughout the US and Canada, is exhibiting at Mipcom this week.
Cookie Jar Entertainment inks deals to acquire the animated series Flying with Byrd and Shelldon. Cookie Jar is at Mipcom this week showcasing both series. Targeted to K6-11, Flying with Byrd is a CG-animated series that features music and friendship and celebrates culturally diverse stories. Aimed at K4-8, Shelldon and his explore life under water and in the sand in this CG animated series. Shellhut Entertainment and GMM Grammy Public Company team up with Cookie Jar Entertainment to take these properties worldwide.
Teleclub, a subsidiary of Swiss film rights and content company Cinetrade, acquires rights for the kid/family-aimed Junior Channel, a German-language channel and part of Studio 100 Media, for Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Junior will be available to Teleclub subscribers as part of its Teleclub Family package. A pay TV channel, Junior programming features classic series including Maya the Bee, Vicky the Viking, Heidi, Pinocchio, Tao, Tao, and international formats such as Woodlies and Zigby.
MORE KIDS STUFF
As part of Nickelodeon‘s Kids Pick the President initiative, the network will, as it has in previous elections, will give kids the chance to ask questions of the candidates in a Nick News with Linda Ellerbee special, Kids Pick the President: The Candidates, which will premiere Monday, October 15, at 8p. After the special kids will be able to place their vote for who they think should be the next President of the United States. This time around the special will feature kids from around the country asking questions of President Barack Obama. The network reports, “After numerous attempts by Nick News to get former Governor Mitt Romney to participate in the special, his camp declined saying he was unable to fit it into his schedule.” The special does include clips of Romney addressing some of the issues raised by kids. In the previous five out of six presidential elections, the kids picked the winner weeks ahead of the adult vote. Kids will be invited to place their votes at www.nick.com/kpp, where they can also find additional information about the issues and candidates, from October 15-22, 2012. Nickelodeon will announce the results of the Kids’ Vote on air on Monday, October 22.
Zodiak Kids finalizes deals with broadcasters across Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) for 300+ hours of kid-targeted content, which it owns worldwide distribution rights for.
– Minimax (Hungary, Romania, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Moldova, Albania and Ex-Yugoslavia) acquires Tele Images’ film Emilie Jolie, Optimistic Pictures’ film Charlotte and Henry and Marathon Media’s Famous 5 (26×26), while MegaMax (Hungary, Romania, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Moldova) picks up the animated fantasy/adventure series Gormiti (65×26) and Tele Images animation series Street Football and Basketeers (seasons 1 and 2, each 26×26) starring basketball star Tony Parker.
– Pop TV (Slovenia) acquires seasons 1 and 2 of arts and crafts show Mister Maker (40×20), The Foundation’s new preschool show Tickety Toc (52×11) and Street Football and Basketeers, as well as Novel Entertainment’s series Horrid Henry (seasons 2 and 3, both 52×11).
– Prava i Prevodi (Ex-Yugoslavia) renews its deal for the first two seasons of Waybuloo as well as picking up season 3 for a total of 150 episodes.
– Da Vinci Learning (CEE, Russia + CIS, Asia, Middle East and Africa) sign on to acquire The Foundation’s series Fingertips (seasons 15) and Brilliant Creatures (seasons 46).

Virenque, who has 15-years experience in the European licensing industry, most recently served as Licensing Manager for Mattel Europe, where she developed the licensing programs on behalf of Fisher-Price for Southern Europe. Previously she was Sr. Brand Manger for The Licensing Company. Virenque began her licensing career as Licensing Manager for Fox Kids Europe.
Philip Underwood is named Manager, Insight Strategy Group.
