Cynopsis: DIGITAL
10.08.13
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 8, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Samsung is introducing an online reality competition series called SOS Island: Survival of the Smartest, available at www.sos-island.com. Contestants are given Samsung smartphones and must use of Vine and Instagram to complete challenges. Through their social profiles, fans are encouraged to follow the contestants and vote on who will win an island of their own.
Thrillist Media Group, known for men’s lifestyle brand Thrillist, is launching a new web tech publication called Supercompressor on Oct. 23. Its articles are geared to young men looking to purchase the latest smartphone or digital car technology. Microsoft’s Surface is the launch sponsor.
YouTube channel TOKYOPOP is promoting its animated and CG animated versions of its graphic novel I Luv Halloween in time for the upcoming holiday. A total of eleven episodes are available for this month through TOKYOPOP’s channel.
Video humor video network Break Media is also unleashing a month of Halloween programming, called 31 Days Of Scares. Original digital series Man At Arms will take part, and a series of spooky Vines titled Voorhess Vines will premiere on Break.com.
Twitter‘s next challenge in the IPO arena is to convince advertisers why its 215 million-user database is worth the $1 billion price. The biggest issue facing the site is the large number of spam accounts, which could hinder an advertiser finding value in its users. The Wall Street Journal reports Twitter has disclosed that only five percent of its users are spam.
In other words: Hate to keep comparing this whole deal to Facebook, but FB dealt with a similar problem when it went public last year, and disclosed the estimated amount of fake users as well about the same, at 7%.
Paramount Pictures and Chrysler teamed up to promote the latest Dodge car model with the help of Will Ferrell’s Anchorman 2 character Ron Burgundy. The campaign will run across linear platforms, and specifically release spots with the Ferrell in character as he promotes the Dodge on the site BurgundyDodge.com and FunnyorDie.com. Video content will also be released on Dodge’s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and a Tumblr page. (We saw these ads and they are a riot.)
Fellow automaker Ford also released its latest cross-platform marketing promotion with the CW, which gives viewers a sneak peak at the latest network series line-up. The CW hired “social ambassadors” with up to a million Twitter followers to promote the newest shows and talk up the Ford Fiesta. The initiative will launch with CW’s kick-off for its fall shows, starting today with The Vampire Diaries and the new The Originals.
Call for Submissions: Cynopsis is producing its annual Programming Guide, which comes out on November 26 and will be sent to all Cynopsis and Cynopsis Kids subscribers. If your network has holiday-themed programming airing from November 27 through December 31, please send your listings to Lynn Leahey at [email protected] no later than Monday November 18. Please include the following information: type of program (i.e. series, special, documentary, movie or holiday-themed episode), title, dates and times of all airings (please indicate when the show first premieres and when subsequent encores will air). A confirmation email will be sent following each submission from Lynn (if you don’t receive a confirmation email, please resubmit).
Apple’s iPhone 5s and 5c strategy is apparently paying off as it soars over rival Samsung. Research from analyst firm Canaccord Genuity shows that more iPhone 5s phones are being sold than the Samsung Galaxy S4. However, the real surprise is that the iPhone 5c is outselling the Samsung equivalent at both AT&T and Sprint stores.
In other words: Apple is leading the market even without top-of-the-line devices. This may well mean more updates of this sort to other Apple products in the future.

Nielsen and Twitter have unveiled its first list of TV show rankings yesterday, and there was little connection between most watched shows and most talked about shows. Twitter reported Breaking Bad took the most tweets for the week of Sept. 23-29 while the top primetime show in total viewers was actually NBC’s NFL Football: New England at Atlanta. The only show that did appear in both top ten lists for the week was The Voice, which ranked number two on Twitter’s list and number eight and nine on the primetime rankings.
AT&T updated its U-Verse TV Everywhere app to allow for live TV streaming on iPhones and iPad devices yesterday. U-Verse subscribers can access more than 100 channels at home on their Apple mobile devices, and 25 channels while elsewhere. The new app also comes with a new interface design and improved remote controls. AT&T launched the app for apple mobile devices sooner than expected, but Android users will still have to wait until Oct. 21 to use the updated app.
Sony’s PlayStation 4 mobile app is heading to Sony’s own PlayStation Vita handheld device with the next update to the app. SCE Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida took to Twitter to reveal the PS4 app’s name as well: PS4 Link. No word on when the update will happen, or when it will be available for other devices like Android or Apple. The PS4 will hit shelves Nov. 15.
