Cynopsis: Kids!


Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 7, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Cake Entertainment enters into a co-production partnership with Australia’s Studio Moshi on its original animated property El Mariachi (52×11).  Currently in development at Studio Moshi, El Mariachi is a 2D animated series aimed at K6-11.


Sorpresa debuts two new education-centric animated series and two live-action kid/family-targeted specials show in 4Q 2008:

  • Wheel Squad joins the network on September 29 at 2:30p.  The animated kids series revolves around four young skateboarders who work together to keep their community alive.
  • The Wumblers will air on Sorpresa Saturdays and Sundays beginning October 25 at 7:3oa, and.
  • The second annual special Luz, Camara, Sorpresa premieres on October 26 at 8:30p.  Hosted by director Jorge Colon, the special features five short film winners and finalists of the Sorpresa Youth Film Competition at the 2008 Hamptons International Film Festival.
  • Juega Cumo un MLS Pro (Play Like an MLS Pro) premieres December 7 at 7-8p.  15-year-old reporter Leily Sanchez goes one-on-one with MLS professionals, the special features the pros teaching viewers not just soccer moves but about staying healthy and active.  Kids are invited to submit user-generated video questions for the pros at www.sorpresatv.com.

PBS Kids Sprout is set to premiere the new short-form preschool series Pajanimals from The Jim Henson Company this November as part of the network’s nighttime block, The Good Night Show.  Commissioned by Sprout and produced by The Jim Henson Company and 4Kids Entertainment, Pajanimals features four puppet characters focusing on typical preschool issues through original music.  Additionally, 5×10 segments of Pajanimals featuring practical sleep advice from experts will be available for parents/caregivers on Sprout On Demand.  4Kids Entertainment serves as the licensing agent for the property.

This week marks the debut of the season 12 of the animated series Arthur on PBS Kids Go! (check local listings).  The week features five new episodes of Arthur as the characters get out and get active and involved in their community.  In one of the first episodes of the season Joan Rivers lends her voce to Francine’s grandmother, while in another episode Lance Armstrong rides in to talk about bike safety.  Also debuting this week are new green-themed Arthur games, including Groovy Garden, at www.pbskidsgo.org/arthur Additional new episodes will bow in spring 2009.

Family Channel (Canada) gives The Suite Life on Deck its Canadian debut this month, beginning with the premiere of back-to-back episodes on Sunday, October 13 at, as part of a Canadian Thanksgiving Day marathon.  The series will then air regularly on Sundays at 3:51p from October 19.  Additionally, Family Channel is offering an early look at the first two episodes of the Disney Channel series as of now at Family.ca ().

KidsCo will launch The Wiggles on its Asia Pacific/Sub-Saharan African feed in November 2008.  Currently available in 40+ territories, KidsCo is a joint venture of NBC Universal, Cookie Jar Group and Corus Entertainment.

Chicago’s WTTW National Productions partners with Roman Coppola‘s Directors Bureau to launch the multi-platform K6-9 targeted sci-fi comedy/adventure series Mission to Planet 429 (104×11 or 52×30) at Mipcom.  The series is scheduled to bow in the US on public television and other media platforms, as well as in other markets, 2010.  Designed to encourage kids to develop reading and comprehension skills, Mission to Planet 429 follows two rookie intergalactic ‘earthsplorers’ on their various missions to save their planet.  The creative team on the property includes head writer Jonathan Collier (executive producer-Monk, and producer-The Simpsons), and production designer Nathan Crowley (The Dark Knight, The Prestige etc.).  Mission to Planet 429 is funded in part y a Ready to Learn grant from the US Department of Education’s Office of Innovation and Improvement.

Marathon Media will launch the new comedy spy series The Amazing Spiez (52×30) at Mipcom Junior 2008.  Shot in HD, The Amazing Spiez features a comic book graphic style and follows four 10-year-old sibling agents, outfitted with the best in new gadgets and vehicles, for The World Organization of Human Production (WHOOP), just like their colleagues Totally Spies.  The Amazing Spiez is a Marathon Media, Canal J, Image Entertainment co-production, in association with TF1 and Teletoon Canada.

American Greetings Properties and co-production partner DQ Entertainment will be at Mipcom where they’ll screen the first episode of the new preschool animated series based on the Maryoku Yummy (52×11) property.  The series is set to be available for air in March 2009.  Jymn Magon, Creator/writer/editor (Duck Tales, Rescue Rangers, Winnie The Pooh), is overseeing the overall direction and development of Maryoku Yummy.  DQ Entertainment holds the distribution rights for broadcast, home video and merchandise of Maryoku Yummy in Asia (excluding Japan), with America Greetings Properties retaining distribution and merchandising rights for the rest of the world.

Portfolio Entertainment has inked a range of pre-Mipcom deals including shows for kids and tweens:

  • Telemundo (Puerto Rico) acquires Heads Up! (26×30), an astronomy series targeted to kids/tweens.
  • Astro Xpresi (Indonesia) and City 7 TV (Hungary) both pick up Workforce (26×30), a tween-aimed series focusing on career exploration
  • Civitel (Chile) picks up the DVD rights for the animated adventure series Toad Patrol (26×30)

GTV, the pan African pay TV service, is headed to Mipcom to acquire English and French language programming for use across its seven channels, G Prime, G Series, G Africa, G Sports 1, G Sports 2, G Xtra and G Star.  GTV hopes to acquire some family-targeted content for its G channels.  Other kid/family-targeted programming available to GTV subscribers includes Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, and MTV Base!, among others.  GTV plans to expand the service to be available in 30+ countries from the current 20 by the end of the year.

Galleon Entertainment will showcase its series formats for the family-targeted reality series Super Soccer Star and young-adult multi-platform property Apollo’s Pad for buyers next week at Mipcom.  Super Soccer Star is produced in association with Chelsea Football Club and its media arm Chelsea Digital Media.  Galleon owns the formats to both properties.

Taffy Entertainment inks a agreement with Italy’s Atlantyca Entertainment publishing division to produce novelty books based on the new 2D flash-animated TV series Hero:108 and targeted to tweens and teens.  Slated to debut on TV in 2009, Hero:108 follows the adventures of a group of young defenders out to end the conflict between animals and humans.  Hero:108 is a co-production of Mike Young Productions, Gamania Digital Entertainment and Cartoon Network International.  Under a previous pact, Taffy and Atlantyca are developing a series of books loosely based on Taffy’s animated series Code Lyoko.

In other Taffy Entertainment news, NCircle Entertainment and Taffy expand their relationship as Taffy names NCircle to handle DVD distribution for the new mixed 3D/CGI/flash-animated preschool series Chloe’s Closet across North America.  The series revolves around Chloe, who uses her imagination to uncover new worlds, as she plays dress-up in her closet, the series also explores early math skills.  Chloe’s Closet is produced by Mike Young Productions in association with Finance Wales, S4C, KI.KA, ARD, TrickCompany, European Film Partners, B.V., Animation Dimension and Telegael.  In June of this year, NCircle and Taffy inked a five-year distribution deal that included the North American DVD distribution of Taffy’s preschool series Dive Olly Dive.

United Media is named by Hallmark Cards, Inc. to serve as the exclusive merchandise licensing agent for Rainbow Brite.  Launched by Hallmark Cards in 1984, a new Rainbow Brite program is being launched featuring Rainbow and her friends.  As part of the new program, Playmates Toys is appointed as the new master toy licensee for Rainbow Brite, and plan to release a full line of new fashion dolls, plush and role-play toys for holiday 2009.  The line will be supported with character content online and in-pack and Share A Rainbow, a pro-social initiative.  Rainbow Brite is the third property under the licensing relationship between United Media and Hallmark, which also includes hoops&yoyo and Maxine brands.

CPLG, the entertainment licensing agency, is appointed as the rights agency for the mixed live-action/2D animated preschool series Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies in the UK, France and Benelux, by National Geographic Kids.  A co-production of National Geographic Kids Entertainment, CBeebies and King Rollo Films, Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies airs CBeebies (UK), on VRT (Belgium) and on Tiji (France), additionally the series will bow on Gulli (France) in early 2009.  The series has been sold in 142 territories.


Marketing firm BrightLine iTV appointed Phyllis Ehrlich to the newly created position of SVP/ Business Development. Phyllis has spent the past 11 years at Turner Broadcasting Systems overseeing ad sales promotions and new media extensions for Cartoon Network and Adult Swim. She will report to BrightLine CEO Jacqueline Corbelli and will be based in the company’s New York City headquarters.


Cartoon Network debuted its new Friday night action-adventure primetime programming block with the one-hour premiere of the new Lucasfilm Animation series Star Wars: The Clone Wars (9-10p) and its lead-in The Secret Saturdays (8-9p).  The Star Wars: The Clone Wars premiere becomes most watched series premiere in hits history among P2+ (3.95 million), bypassing the previous record holder Ben 10: Alien Force (April 18, 2008, P2+ (2.88 million).  The network reports the series debut was also the top show in the time period among K2-11 (1.8 million), K6-11 (1.4 million), and Tweens 9-14 (1.2 million), for the latter the show ranked as the largest tween audience for any primetime telecast of an original series on the network’s history.
