Turner Content Solutions Asia Pacific enters into deal with free-to-air channel TV5 (Philippines) for the first Cartoon Network branded programming block in the Asia Pacific region. Set to launch across the Philippines on October 18, the block will air 19 hours weekly (Mondays-Fridays 9a-10:30a and 4:30p-6p, and Saturdays/Sundays 9a-11a) and feature series dubbed into Tagalog (the Philippines’ native language), including Ben 10, Ed, Edd & Eddy, Chowder, Dexter’s Lab, League of Super Evil, The Powerpuff Girls, My Gym Partner’s a Monkey, Batman, The Brave & The Bold, and Johnny Bravo. TV5 reaches 3+ million kids in the Philippines.
Indie music publisher Bug Music acquires the worldwide rights to Saban Music Group‘s (SMG) music publishing catalog. Under the deal Bug Music will control the global rights to SMG’s entire music library across multiple platforms. SMG’s catalog includes material from kid-targeted properties including Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Digimon, The Addams Family Reunion, Teenage mutant Ninja Turtles: The Next Generation, Princess Sissi and Walter Melon properties, which a slate of theme songs, cues and scores 90+ TV series and 100 made for TV movies and specials.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Nickelodeon is partnering with Chorion and publisher, Frederick Warne & Co., which also owns the Beatrix Potter property, to develop and produce a new animated preschool series The Tales of Peter Rabbit. Based on and featuring Potter’s Peter Rabbit characters, the new series is scheduled to air in 2012 on Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. Nickelodeon and Chorion previously teamed on the animated preschool series Olivia and Max & Ruby. The Tales of Peter Rabbit will include characters such as Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny. Frederick Warne & Co. is part of the Penguin Group. Frederick Warne published Beatrix Potter’s first book The Tale of Peter Rabbit initially in 1902.
Singapore-based August Media Holdings and Classic Media are partnering to develop and produce up to ten TV series, based on classic American properties for the international market, in a deal that represents a US production investment of upwards of US$60 million. To begin, August Media and Classic Media produce five new TV series based on properties from Classic Media”s library, which includes George of the Jungle, Underdog, Mr. Magoo, The Lone Ranger, Caster the Friendly Ghost, Rocky & Bullwinkle, Richie Rich and Little Lulu. Select animated and live-action properties will be reinvented with Red Kite, a unit of August Media, and Classic Media’s creative teams heading up the effort. August Media and Classic Media are currently in discussion with co-production partners, studios and broadcasters for the development of the first five series.
DQ Entertainment (DQE) enters into a new co-production deal with Germany’s ZDF Group for the 3D CGI animated series The New Adventures of Peter Pan (26×30). DQE is producing the series with France’s Method Animation. As a full co-production partner on The New Adventures of Peter Pan, ZDF has the right to appoint executive producers with editorial rights and also holds the distribution rights for German-speaking countries across Europe (excluding Italy and Turkey), as well as the UK, Ireland, South Africa and Latin America. France Televisions has the rights to the series for France and French-speaking territories. Slated to debut by the beginning of 2012, the 3D stereoscopic CGI series is budgeted at close to US$14 million. Other production partners for the Peter Pan series include De Agostini (Italy) and ATV (Turkey).
Australia’s SLR Productions welcomes Scrawl Studios and Media Development Authority of Singapore as co-producers on the new preschool animated series Guess How Much I Love You The Adventures of the Little Nutbrown Hare. The series is based on the picture book by author Sam McBratney and illustrated by Anita Jeram, which is published by Walker Books.
FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) inks a range of deals and partnerships for kid and family programming at Mipcom, as part of its ongoing efforts arena, including kids in all demos.
- The company completes a three project development with Dan Clark Company (Brats of the Lost Nebula, The Save-Ums and Team Smithereen), which will include properties that can expand across multiple platforms.
- FME partner with CBeebies In-House Production for a new CGI animated fantasy adventure preschool series slated for 2012. FME will co-develop, co-fund and co-produce the series for CBeebies and will also handle the licensing and other ancillary rights globally and distribution rights (excluding the UK).
- Also partnering with FME is Josh Selig’s Little Airplane Productions (to co-develop and co-produce a new preschool aimed mixed media animated series, Jo B. G. Raff. The deal will see FME handling distribution rights worldwide.
- FME and Australia’s Sticky Pictures join to develop a new TV series staring Bindi Irwin (Australia Zoo and Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin’s daughter). Sticky Pictures will co-produce the live-action series with FremantleMedia Australia.
- The company is also partnering with Blue Rocket, a Tasmania-based digital media production company, to develop a new animated series.
- FME teams with Random House for a co-development and production deal to create a series based on a popular kid’s graphic novel; a new development deal for a series based on the exploits of a real alternative rock band.
- FME is in discussions with a US broadcaster about the series, which it describes as “The Monkees meets 1960s Batman.”
- Producer/writer/creator Russell Marcus signs on to pen a new kid/family animated sitcom for The Hub, the new joint Discovery Communications and Hasbro cable channel. Currently in development, the series is slated to debut in fall 2011 or mid-season 2011/2012.
- Also on the way is a “re-imagined” version of DangerMouse, the classic UK animated series that FME owns.
MORE KIDS STUFF
PBS commissions a new season of 26 episodes of WordGirl from Scholastic Media for its K6-11 aimed PBS Kids Go! afternoon programming block. WordGirl is produced by Scholastic Media and its animation studio Soup2Nuts. WordGirl follows the adventures of mild-mannered fifth-grader, Becky Botsford, who transforms into the super vocabulary powered superhero WordGirl as she and her monkey pal, Captain HuggyFace, defeat vocabulary villains.
Rekkit Rabbit hops into more episodes as French broadcaster TF1 commissions a second season (52×13) of Marathon Media‘s HD animated series, for a total of 104×13. Targeted to K6-11, the first season of Rekkit Rabbit is now complete and set to premiere on TF1 and Disney Channel Europe in early 2011. The series revolves around Rekkit Rabbit, a 10-foot rabbit, who has left his role as a magician’s assistant and landed with his new pal, 12-year-old Jay. Together Jay and Rekkit try to handle Rekkit’s unreliable magical abilities. The series is penned by head writers Reid Harrisson (The Simpsons, George of the Jungle) and Mitch Watson (Scooby Doo!). Created by Marathon Media, which is part of Zodiak Media Group, the series is distributed worldwide by Zodiak Rights.
FremantleMedia Enterprises acquires the exclusive licensing and distribution rights (outside of Canada) to the live-action tween/teen-targeted series My Babysitter is a Vampire, a Fresh-TV production. The series was developed by Fresh-TV in association with Teletoon Canada, and debuts with a TV movie October, followed by the TV series in 2011.
American Greetings Properties (AGP) secures a new broadcast deal for Strawberry Shortcake in Russia. Under the broadcast agreement, Canal J will air Strawberry Shortcake in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kzakhstan, Kirghiszstan, Tadzhikistan, Uzbekistan, Moldavia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Turkmenistan. The broadcaster will air Strawberry Shortcake’s Berry Bitty Adventures TV series and The Strawberry Shortcake Movie: Sky’s the Limit in Russian on Tiji and Gulli throughout the region beginning this month.
Baraem TV, the preschool arm of Al Jazeera Children’s Channel, acquires the mixed CGI animated/live-action series Driver Dan’s Story Train from twofour54. Baraem TV will televise the Arabic language version of the series, under the titled Captain Karim Qitar Al Hekayat, beginning next year. Blink Studios, an animation/production studio based at twofour54 in Abu Dhabi, will produce the Arabic version of the series.
MARKETING/LICENSING
This week marks Zinkia‘s launch of the new Pocoyo (www.pocoyo.com) website, which features more games, puzzles and activities, in addition to the virtual world. Currently available in English, Spanish and Italian, the website lets users to download exclusive content (e.g. screen savers) as well as take part in the Pocoyo community via blogs and forums. The site also provides parents and care givers with a news and information section focusing on a range of kid’s issues, including health, education, and computers.
The Jim Henson Company signs a deal with software developer Computer Applications Development (C.A.D.), for use of C.A.D.’s web-based MediaRights sales process management system. MediaRights allows distributors/producers/licensors to create rights, run availabilities, generate and manage sales orders, set payment terms, define contract terms, service materials, generate catalogs and view reports.
Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP) is at Mipcom this week where it is unveiling its product portfolio based on Warner Bros. Animation‘s new half-hour TV series The Looney Tunes Show and more Looney Tunes 3D CG-animated theatrical shorts. The Looney Tunes Show is slated to launch on Cartoon Network in the US in early 2011. In addition to each episode’s main story, The Looney Tunes Show also features cartoons within a cartoon. The Tasmanian Devil, Speedy Gonzales, Marvin the Martian and other characters sing original songs in two-minute Merrie Melodies music videos, and the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote are featured in two-and-a-half-minute CG shorts.

DQ Entertainment appoints Rashida Adenwala, currently the head of Company Affairs and Investor Relations, as an Executive Director/Finance & Investor Relations on its Board of Directors. She is currently. She has worked with DQE since 1989.
Greg Ballard is named SVP/Digital Games, Warner Bros. Digital Distribution and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. Ballard will report dually to Thomas Gewecke, President, Warner Bros. Digital Distribution and Martin Tremblay, President, Warner Bros. Interactive Media. Ballard was most recently CEO of Transpera, a mobile video ad network. He was previously President and CEO, Glu Mobile and CEO SONICblue.
