Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 31, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Just in time to be scared silly for Halloween, Comcast Corp. today launches its new broadband and VOD channel FEARnet.com. As a multiplatform network, FEARnet will offer movie and video content from Sony and Lionsgate through VOD, online and mobile. Targeting the young, horror enthusiast, the FEARnet on-demand component will feature more than 200 suspense and gore titles per year, equal to approximately 70 hours of programming a month, including some Japanese- and Spanish-language content and others in high-def. A few of the titles such as Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Night of the Living Dead and The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre will be offered free to Comcast’s 11 million digital cable subscribers. Online, FEARnet will include nine full-length films and 200 shorts for free streaming, in addition to 50 downloadable movies to buy or rent each month, as well as several online interactive elements and community tools. Via mobile, users can access FEARnet at Mobile.FEARnet.com or Wap.FEARnet.com to take the fright network on the go. Future plans for FEARnet will include original webisodes and mobile content from established Hollywood directors.


NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution will renew The Martha Stewart Show for a third season in national syndication and has cleared the show with several broadcast station groups including the NBC O&Os in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco and other top markets. The hour-long, daily how-to show with host Martha Stewart has also been sold for the 2007-2008 season to stations from Gannett, Belo, Fisher and Scripps among others. The show is produced by Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, with Mark Burnett and Martha Stewart as Executive Producers.
South Central Communications Corporation will sell its television station WAZE/Evansville, a CW affiliate, to Roberts Broadcasting Company, pending FCC approval.  Financials were not disclosed. Roberts Broadcasting owns the television stations WRBU/St. Louis, WZRB/Columbia, SC, and WRBJ/Jackson. Kalil & Co. is the exclusive broker for the new transaction.
Correction : Young Broadcasting Inc. will make free air time available to political candidates for the November election, as a public service for its viewers in the markets served by its stations. Each candidate will receive two 60-second response time segments on topics selected by the YBI station affiliate, which will then air in newscasts in each market and on the station’s web sites. (Yesterday’s edition incorrectly categorized the time as “commercial time.”)


Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. will debut its newest broadband and interactive-online community channel, Super Deluxe next January. Ad supported, Super Deluxe will be free to consumers and available online, as well as through cable VOD, wireless devices and personal media players. Featuring exclusive original comedy from famous and new comedians, the programming menu will include shorts, sketches and episodic series. Through its online community platform, Super Deluxe users will also have the chance to interact with the artists and each other by creating profiles, uploading videos, sharing content and more.
Spot Runner, the LA-based seller of online advertising and media buying and planning services, has received $40 million in financing from the CBS Corp. and two advertising holding companies, WPP Group and Interpublic Group of Cos. The boost is intended to give the 10-month old company better access to local online advertising markets. Interpublic and WPP will use the services for its clients to target ads in local markets, and CBS says the service will help increase local advertising demand. Spot Runner says it can create ads in local markets for a lot less than those developed using traditional commercial production, and according to company co-founder, David Waxman, Spot Runner will use the new funds to develop more services in new directions such as IPTV, VOD, internet video, as well as to improve its current offerings.

Fox News is adding to its news repertoire with two new video shorts – Fox News Flash.  Both just sixty seconds long, one is produced in the morning by the Fox & Friends team, the other in the afternoon with Sam Shepard, and both available on FoxNews.com, iTunes and Myspace, as well as those Cingular and AMP’d customers with video capabilities. Fox News plans to add additional Flash updates from other news teams throughout the day.

Fox has given a 12 episode order to a drama project called Drive starring Alan Ruck, Kristin Lehman, Melanie Lynskey, Shahine Ezell, Andres Saenz-Hudson and Emily Stone. Produced by 20th Century Fox TV, the story follows drivers participating in an illegal underground race across America.  The show is expected to join the schedule in the spring.

Elsewhere at Fox, the development project Beyond has been taken off the slate and will not move forward.


ReelzChannel has appointed Phillip Nakov as VP/Business Development and Partnerships for ReelzChannel.com. His responsibilities include driving new users to the web site, while increasing both traditional and non-traditional revenue outlets. In addition, he will develop content syndication partnerships for the network with other web sites and mobile devices.
Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. has named Drew Reifenberger as SVP/GM of Super Deluxe, the company’s new broadband channel which will debut in January.
Expanding its executive team, the Santa Monica-based mobile entertainment provider Amp’d Mobile has upped Bill Stone to President where he will supervise the daily operations and strategic direction of the company’s U.S. business and will lead the launch of Amp’d Mobile internationally. Additionally, Sue Swenson will become the new COO to manage the areas of Technology Operations, Customer Care, Human Resources and Facilities, and last month Dan Cohrs was appointed EVP/Finance and Corporate Development. Two more new hires include Russ Eisenman as VP/Marketing and Todd Meyer as VP/Human Resources.

Kevin Magee has been upped to EVP/Fox News, reporting to Roger Ailes, Chairman/CEO.  Adding to his duties, Kevin is now responsible for the syndicated morning show with Juliet Huddy and Mike Jerrick, scheduled to premiere in 2007 on the Fox O&O stations.

Melissa Harris has been bumped to Regional Sales Account Executive at Cox Media Hampton Roads, VA.

Shaun McDonald will oversee the CBS’ five O&O stations in South Florida – WFOR/WBFS in Miami, and three West Palm Beach stations – WTCX. WWHB and WTCN.  Brien Kennedy has left the company. Shaun hails from the CBS O&O stations in Detroit where he was GM.

The CW has named Joanna Klein as VP/Drama Development and Gaye Hirsch to VP/Current Programming.  Joanna will work with all of the new drama series on the network slate, reporting to Thom Sherman, EVP/Drama Development.  Gaye will oversee the day-to-day production on primetime series, reporting to Michael Roberts, EVP/Current Programming.


Sunday – A18-49 Analysis: ABC was #1 Sunday night with a 5.6/14 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. Placing second was NBC at 5.2/13, and then CBS 4.2/10, FOX 2.0/5, UNIV 0.9/2, CW 0.8/2 and TELE 0.2/1. CBS came in first at 7p with its NFL Overrun/60 Minutes at 5.4/15, with ABC’s Funniest Videos next at 3.5/10. At 8p, ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition at 5.5/13 was just a smidge ahead of NBC’s NFL football match at 5.4/13. ABC triumphed at 9p with Desperate Housewives delivering an 8.3/19. Ending the evening, NBC outdid the others at 10p with the NFL game final at 5.9/16, with ABC’s Brothers & Sisters in second place at 5.0/13.

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1926-Harry Houdini, the most celebrated magician and escape artist of the 20th century, dies of peritonitis in a Detroit hospital. Twelve days before, Houdini had been talking to a group of students after a lecture in Montreal when he commented on the strength of his stomach muscles and their ability to withstand hard blows. Suddenly, one of the students punched Houdini twice in the stomach. The magician hadn’t had time to prepare, and the blows ruptured his appendix. He fell ill on the train to Detroit, and, after performing one last time, was hospitalized. Doctors operated on him, but to no avail. The burst appendix poisoned his system, and on October 31 he died.
