Good Morning.  It’s Tuesday, October 30, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing. 

Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution has sold The Bonnie Hunt Show to more than 55% of the country for its fall 2008 launch. The one-hour daily strip has been cleared in 15 of the top 20 markets and has been sold to several station groups including Hearst-Argyle, Gannett, Belo, Scripps, McGraw-Hill, LIN, Allbritton, Fox, Tribune, Clear Channel, Young, Sinclair, in addition to the previously announced two-year pickup on the NBC O&O stations in nine markets. The talk show is produced by Bob & Alice Productions and paraMedia, inc., in association with Telepictures Productions.

Just as news came yesterday Warner Bros. would return to the NATPE 2008 convention floor, comes news today that CBS Television Distribution will not be returning. You know what that means – no King World booth or suite, and no big annual bash.  This is not a final decision for all future NATPEs, in fact CBS TV Distribution says it will revisit this decision each year.  And with all that said, CBS Paramount International Television will be attending.  Sony has also opted off the convention floor this year – choosing to take a suite instead. As is now its tradition, 20th will also be in a suite.  NBC Universal will be on the floor.

USA Network and Sci Fi have ponied up for a handful of Lionsgate films, according to Daily Variety.  For a cool $20 million, the two cablers have picked up the rights to Saw II, 3:10 to Yuma, Good Luck Chuck, Chaos, Crank, The Condemned and War, among others.  Both Yuma and Chuck are still to be additionally cleared on a broadcast network or potentially to a second cable network. Crank and Chaos become available to USA and Sci Fi in 2009, while the majority of the others will make their way over in 2010.

HOLA Networks launched the first premium online display advertising network targeted exclusively to Hispanics living in the U.S. through a strategic partnership with 24/7 Real Media.  The new network opens with approximately 4.5 million unique users in the U.S. and will meet the needs of the U.S. Hispanic advertising market by offering updated optimization tools and segmentation capabilities. HOLA Networks includes international websites in Spanish that have audience penetration in the U.S. in addition to other U.S. Hispanic websites reaching niche and hard-to-find audiences.

Gannett Co., Inc. and Tribune Interactive, a division of Tribune Company, is partnering to expand a national network of local entertainment websites under the newly-formed company Metromix LLC, is headquartered in Chicago with a national content group based in Los Angeles. Metromix.com, co-owned equally by the two parent companies, will launch in the top 30 U.S. markets and other local metro areas in the coming months. Currently, Metromix is available in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago and other large Tribune markets and offers a one-stop guide to local restaurants, clubs, events, concerts, movies and more. Typical users are 21 to 34-year olds with large disposable incomes.

Five Media General stations may soon be on the block.  Stations in Jacksonville, FL; Lexington, KY; Panama City, FL; Alexandria, LA; and Toccoa, GA, are all potentially on the block, according to a statement released yesterday by the company.  Media General also owns newspapers in Richmond VA and in Tampa.  Media General says there is no specific timing for a final decision if the stations will be sold.

~  PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

In anticipation of its upcoming makeover January 1 from Court TV to truTV, the network revealed its new tagline: “Not Reality. Actuality.” with a promise to viewers to offer programming involving real situations, real stakes and real people. The network also unveiled plans for two new series:

  • Sky Racers about Desiree Horton, a female news helicopter pilot in Los Angeles.
  • One False Move follows people whose jobs and adventures take them to the edge of disasters.

Animal Planet started production on Petfinder the new one-hour original series set to premiere early next year based on the website that matches people with pets from their local animal shelter. The first 13 episodes will be shot in hi-def in and around the Los Angeles area. Wildlife expert Jarod Miller and celebrity dog trainer Dina Zaphiris will co-host the production from 3Ball Productions.

Lifetime begins production of its newest pilot project The Verdict next month, produced by Lionsgate.  The story focuses on a celebrity who has been accused of hiring someone to kill her love.

Based on the UK series Spaced, Fox‘s new comedy pilot project is about a man and woman who pretend to be a couple to get cheaper rent rates.  This project is from Wonderland Sound and Vision, Warner Bros. TV, and Granada producing.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Don Parsons joined CaribeVision as President/Sales effective immediately. Don, who has twenty years of experience in executive management and sales roles, will oversee the company’s sales force.

Horizon Media added Cindy Riccio as Director/Communication. Cindy comes to Horizon from Hanesbrands Inc. where she created brand PR campaigns for more than nine brands including Hanes, Champion, Bali and Playtex. Furthermore, Horizon promoted Angela Mailloux to VP up from Broadcast Group Manager in the Los Angeles office.

Kent Haehl returns to Channel One Network and Channel One News, owned and operated by Alloy Media + Marketing Company, as CEO. Most recently, Kent was EVP at In-Store Broadcasting Network (IBN). In his new role, Kent will oversee the direction and strategic development of Channel One Network products and in particular for the teen-targeted Channel One News.

CBS Television Distribution upgraded Stephen Hackett to SVP/NSM. Along with his new responsibilities, Stephen will continue to manage the Dallas office in addition to working with CTD’s national sales team to syndicate the company’s roster of first-run and off-network programs as well as web-based content and brand extensions to local television stations.

Spike Digital Entertainment Group named Rebecca Keszkowski as Senior Director/Integrated Marketing, Digital. She will form and lead an integrated marketing team which will focus on digital-only sponsorships for Spike.com, GameTrailers.com and Xfire. Based in New York City, Rebecca will report to Dario Spina, SVP/Integrated Marketing for MTVNE. In a related move, Samantha Newman is now Director/Integrated Marketing for MTV Networks’ Entertainment Group which includes the multi-platform brands of Comedy Central, Spike TV and TV Land networks along with their websites and other sites such as AtomFilms, AtomUploads, GameTrailers.com and Xfire. Based in New York City, Samantha will also report to Dario Spina and is responsible for all integrated marketing strategies for the entire MTVNE Group.

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc. (MSLO) announced three new appointments: Jacki Kelley as EVP/Media Sales joining from Yahoo! where she was VP/Worldwide Sales Strategies and Solutions; Lee Heffernan, who has been a consultant to MSLO will now be SVP/Integrated Marketing; and Tom Barreca coming from World Wrestling Entertainment where he was EVP/WWE Enterprises, has been tapped as SVP/Digital and Emerging Media. All three are charged with further developing and increasing the company’s digital offerings and will work closely with MSLO’s publishing, broadcasting and internet teams to create new revenue opportunities.

Betsy Brightman is the new VP/Affiliate Relations and Distribution at Retirement Living TV. Betsy is charged with securing linear carriage for the network with cable and satellite operators and will work on developing a new media distribution platform.

Fox Cable Networks appointed Brian Peterson to Director/Corporate Communications for the company’s more than 35 cable and satellite-delivered programming networks. Most recently, Brian was Director/Media Relations for Fox Sports Net North in Minneapolis. In his new role, he will report to Thomas Tyrer, SVP/Corporate Communications and Cross-Platform Operations, Fox Networks Group.

Dan Limerick advanced to SVP/Business Affairs at Warner Bros. Television (WBTV) where he will continue to report to Brett Paul, EVP/Business Affairs, Operations and Finance. Dan works as the main contact person and business affairs negotiator for several of the studio’s producers and as WBTV’s business affairs representative on many shows including Smallville, Two and a Half Men and Notes from the Underbelly among others.

Centris, the entertainment, communications and technology research and competitive intelligence firm, hired David Klein as EVP to supervise its new West Coast office based in Los Angeles. In addition, David will handle sales, marketing and client service efforts for all Centris products.

Tom Ascheim, who has been with Nickelodeon for the last 17 years and most recently as GM, is leaving the company to become CEO of Newsweek magazine. Congratulations Tom!

Former VH1 VP/Communications Tracy McGraw moves to BET Networks as VP/Communications, reporting to Jeanine Liburd, SVP/Communications and Public Affairs. Based in New York, Tracy will lead the network’s publicity and press efforts for its series, specials and tentpole events.

Deborah Blackwell, GM at SOAPnet, announced she will leave the company in early 2008. Deborah, who has been with the network for six and a half years, will remain as a consultant until her contract expires. Brian Frons, President/Daytime, Disney-ABC Television Group, said he will not replace Deborah’s position and will manage the daily operations of the channel.

Sunday – A18-49 Analysis: FOX finished the World Series on top Sunday night at 6.0/15 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. At 7p, FOX led with its World Series Game 4 coverage at 5.1/15 and again at 8p with 6.2/15. More viewers watched ABC’s Desperate Housewives at 9p with ratings at 7.1/16 which beat the World Series on FOX at 6.8/15. ABC continued in first through 10p as Brothers & Sisters delivered a 5.1/13.
