Ballots are being sent to all members of Writers Guild of America West and Writers Guild of America East, asking for authorization to strike anytime after current contract expires on October 31, reports The New York Times. Issues at the center of the negotiations include residual payments after initial screenings, with particular interest in broadband airings and other multiplatform venues. Martha Stewart On Demand begins this week as the latest VOD service for Comcast Digital Cable subscribers in the Life & Home section. Right now ten hours of “how-to” Halloween-themed content will be available from Martha Stewart Living and The Martha Stewart Show as well as Petkeeping With Marc Morrone and Everyday Food. Beginning early next month, Thanksgiving and Christmas-themed content will be offered. Oxygen’s long-running series Snapped is back for a sixth season with 26 new half-hour episodes starting this Sunday at 10p. Immediately after, the network will debut a new companion series Captured at 1030p. Each 30m episode of Captured will relate a true-crime story from the perspective of the woman most involved with the case such as a friend, attorney or family member. Both series are produced by Jupiter Entertainment. Comedy Central renewed the weekly Mind of Mencia for a fourth season and new episodes will premiere next spring. Mind of Mencia: Season 3 Uncensored DVD can be purchased starting October 23. Comedy Central also voted to bring back the animated series Lil’ Bush for a second season, with ten new episodes debuting next spring. Belo will separate its TV station group from its newspaper assets, forming two separate entities – Belo Corp. will include the TV stations and its two cable news networks; and A.H. Belo will include the newspapers. The TV Station group includes 20 stations in 15 markets, and reaching a total of 14% of the total US households. Heading up this entity will be Dunia Sheve as Pres/CEO. Both companies reportedly generate approx $750 million in revenue annually. World Championship Sports Network (WCSN) completed a financing deal with private equity firm InterMedia Partners, making them a major stakeholder in the network. The added funding will allow WCSN to continue their coverage of World Championship and other international competitions involving Olympic sports. ~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~
Disney’s Buena Vista Productions (BVP) signed a first-look agreement with Anna Carrfors Brakenhielm’s international content company, Silverback, which is effective immediately. This deal will increase reality production efforts for BVP that can be used for ABC Network, cable, online and syndication. This agreement will give BVP the U.S. domestic rights to all content, formats and series developed by Silverback. MTV signed a new production deal with Ken Mok which includes having him executive produce a pilot and possible series. Ken will work closely with Liz Gateley, MTV’s SVP/Series Development. Ken is also the creator of MTV’s Making the Band and America’s Next Top Model. Dick Wolf’s Wolf Films and Kickstart Prods. are producing a pilot based on the graphic novel Johnny Dynamite, reports Variety. The story begins with former cop Dynamite traveling to Las Vegas to find his missing girlfriend, only to find Satan has set up residence in Sin City, and is in the soul-trading business. Dynamite stays, continues to search for his girlfriend, and also helps those who have found themselves in poor business deals with the devil. In an effort to maintain its comic book origins, Dynamite will be shot entirely on a soundstage with greenscreen. So far, there is no network attached to this project. Fox has ordered up an untitled drama from Imagine TV and Twentieth TV about an ex-cop who can easily determine when someone is lying, who teams up with clinical psychologist, and together they open an agency utilizing both their skills. The procedural drama takes on both the criminal element as well as cases involving people who just want to know if someone is lying and why. Ron Gloff joined National Geographic Digital Motion as Account Manager responsible for licensing content to entertainment clients in the film, television and museum industries. Based in Los Angeles, Ron will work with clients in the western U.S. and Canada. He reports to John Brosnan, Director/North American Sales. TiVo Inc. established a new Interactive Direct Response Advertising Group and has appointed Robert Barnett as Senior Director to lead the new group. Robert will also represent TiVo with Worldlink Ventures, Inc. He reports to Karen Bressner, SVP/Advertising Sales. Tandberg Television recruited Tom Miller as Senior Sales Director and Terry Fletcher as Director/IPTV Sales, Western Region. Tom will report to Ed Giovannini, VP/Broadcast Sales. Terry will focus on sales and telco leads in the western territories of the U.S. He will work from his office in Washington state and report to Gordon Lewandowski, Senior Director/IPTV Sales. Frank Minishak comes to MSG Media in the new position as VP/Digital Sales. Frank will lead digital sales for the Sales and Marketing group and he will work in tandem with the MSG Interactive unit to bring in advertising and sponsorship revenue for the company’s websites, broadband video, wireless, ITV and VOD platforms. Jupiter Entertainment upgraded Deborah Dawkins to VP/Programming. She currently manages the production of the Oxygen show Snapped and its new counter-part series Captured. Trailer Park TV, the network and cable entertainment marketing arm of Trailer Park, hired Justin Seeley as Producer. He will manage the production of premiere campaigns, launches, episodics, sizzle reels and online promotions for the company’s television clients. Previously, Justin was a writer/producer for ABC. Sí TV appointed Lisa Delligatti as SVP/Affiliate Sales and Jody A. Rose as Executive Director/East Division Affiliate Sales. Lisa will supervise all affiliate sales efforts for the company, coming from Discovery Networks U.S. where she was SVP/Affiliate Sales and Marketing. Jody will spearhead all affiliate sales in the company’s Eastern division. She will report to Lisa Delligatti. ESPN moved Eric Johnson to EVP/Multimedia Sales, ESPN Customer Marketing and Sales. In his new role, Eric will create and lead the network’s multimedia sales team which handles sales efforts across all of ESPN’s media assets including television, online, radio, print, wireless and broadband.
