Cynopsis: Kids!

10/28/08

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 28, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Beyond Productions heads into production on the new kid’s TV series Crime Scene Detective (52×15 or 26×30).  Based on publisher Dorling Kindersley‘s book of the same name, the show features dramatized Fantasy Mysteries and At Home Crime Scenes that can be solved using real forensic science skills, while giving viewers the chance to take part as well.   Beyond has pre-sold the series to Super RTL, Seven Network Australia and Television Ontario.  The series begins shooting this month and is slated for delivery beginning mid 2009.  Beyond Distribution represents Crime Scene Detective, with worldwide rights available.

In a deal completed at Mipcom, Art’Mell (France) partners with animation studio Forma Animada (Spain) to co-produce the 3D animated series Abby Careful (52 episodes), per Variety.  Targeted to K8-11 and budgeted at $3.5 million, Abby Careful will educate kids about steering clear of household mishaps and how to handle things if they should occur.  The report says the co-production is a 80% (Spain) and 20% (France) deal, with development on the series being funded, at least in part, by Andalusia trade group UGT-A and the General Direction of Cultural Industries.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon premieres its first iCarly TV movie, iGo to Japan, on Saturday, November 8 (8-9:30p), which will be followed by the series premiere of the network’s new live-action series True Jackson, VP (9:30p).  In the movie Carly, Sam and Freddie head to Japan where their webcast has been nominated for a big award, but getting there is easier than it sounds.  Let’s just say that in addition to a language barrier and rivals, the iCarly team winds up parachuting from a possum-filled cargo plane.  The movie also features a performance by the band Good Charlotte.  Additionally, Nickelodeon recently debuted the newly redesigned iCarly.com site.  True Jackson will air regularly Saturdays at 8:30p.

Cartoon Network US acquires Fresh TV‘s Total Drama Action from Cake Distribution.  A spin-off of Total Drama Island (TDI), the new Total Drama Action will is currently in production and set to bow in 2009 on Cartoon Network US and Teletoon (Canada).  TDI currently airs on Cartoon Network’s Har Har Tharsdays primetime comedy block (Thursdays 7:30-10p).  Created by Fresh TV, Total Drama Action is commissioned by Teletoon.

KidsCo inks a content deal with Korean’s Iconix Entertainment, under which KidsCo acquires a number of Iconix’s kid’s programming for air on its Asia Pacific and Sub-Saharan African feed.  The pact includes kid’s shows such as, Nalong Fly to the Sky and Spheres, both of which will bow on KidsCo in early 2009.  Additionally, KidsCo has launched in Papua New Guinea under a deal with local broadcast platform, Channel 8.  KidsCo channel is a joint venture between NBC Universal, Cookie Jar Group and Corus Entertainment.

Ameba, the Winnipeg-based IPTV system aimed at kids, returns from its first visit to Mipcom where it acquired Janet’s Planet (interstitials and 1×25 special) and the Booples (21 shorts) for its lineup on AmebaTV.com.  Hosted by series creator, Janet Ivey, Janet’s Planet uses music to help educate kids about our solar system.  Booples is An animated Christian series that delivers its messaging via music, characters and stories.

Toei Animation Co. partners with online media distributor, Crunchyroll, to offer streaming, subscription and download-to-own for several of its anime titles.  Beginning this week Toei’s series including Digimon Adventure 02 (everyone), Fist of the North Star (teens), Pretty Cure (older kids) and Slam Dunk (older kids) will be available beginning this week.

Aardman Animations teams with YouTube to launch another new branded channel, Aardman’s Darkside. Aardman’s Darkside features comedy and shorts programming including Rex the Runt, The Adventures of Jeffrey, A Town Called Panic and Angry Kid.  These Aardman properties are more for teens and up.  Earlier this month Aardman and YouTube debuted Aardman’s first branded channel offering family aimed programming such as Wallace and Gromit: Cracking Contraptions, Creature Comforts and Morph.  Aardman’s properties are also available on iTunes, Hulu, Joost, Atom Films and other online and mobile platforms in the UK and internationally.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Scholastic ramps up the promotion for the second book in its K8-12 targeted The 39 Clues series.  Whoopi Goldberg will interview Gordon Korman, author of The 39 Clues Book 2: One False Note, in a 1-hour webcast on December 1 at 1p, asking questions submitted by kids during the webcast.  The webcast will be followed by a 1-hour live online chat with Korman.  This week marks Scholastic’s release of the first chapter of One False Note at http://www.scholastic.com/39clues, which is set for simultaneous publication in the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada on December 2, 2008.  The first book in The 39 Clues series, The Maze of Bones by author Rick Riordan, was published last month.  The movie rights to The 39 Clues have been acquired by DreamWorks Studios with Steven Spielberg possibly directing.

The first six minutes of Disney‘s new Tinker Bell movie will preview exclusively at www.disney.com/tinkerbell today.  The movie also releases today on Blu-ray HD and DVD.  Additionally, Disney Online’s newly launched virtual world Pixie Hollow supports the movie debut with an in-game event, where players search for the hidden party location to earn badges and get party favors.
