A group of technology companies took the first step in making it a heck of a lot easier for connected devices to jump on the internet without a direct connection to a network. The WiFi Alliance began certifying new devices such as netbooks, tablets, cameras and printers that can band together with another connected device to connect to the internet without a router. Designed to be as seamless as a Bluetooth connection, the technology comes with its own built in security (no passwords to worry about) and promises to hasten the development of applications that rely on a connection for up to date information. Intel, Broadcom and Cisco and among the companies that have committed to developing products for the standard.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
The Android development team announced that the Android Marketplace has exceeded 100,000 apps, a week after Apple announced that the App Store surpassed the 300k app mark. Google says it is activating more than 200,000 phones a day, but developers have not shown the enthusiasm they have for the thriving App Store. The App Store also boasts a more global reach, up and running in 90 countries, compared to 32 countries for the Android Marketplace.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Adobe introduced a package of new tools and services around its Flash-integrated AIR development platform to enable developers to write apps once that play across multiple platforms and devices including those running on next generation Android 2.2. New content protection options are geared to increase security for streaming of premium content. Samsung will be the first television manufacturer to integrate support for Adobe AIR 2.5 in Samsung SmartTVs. Adobe also says it is working with device makers to pre-install AIR on new Android phones.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Lionsgate
is working with Augme Technologies on a new mobile marketing campaign around Tyler Perry’s latest feature “For Colored Girls,” slated to premiere on Nov. 5. Two-dimensional QR codes can be scanned from printed posters to take mobile users to the “Colors” mobile site featuring a trailer, a gallery of photos ect.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
CommScope
is in talks with The Carlyle Group to take the coax cable company private for $3 billion in cash.
 
Rovi Corp. struck a deal with Telstra to extend the licensing of Rovi’s interactive program guide (IPG) patent portfolio. Telstra will continue to license Rovi patent intellectual property for Telstra’s T-Box service in Australia.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
The CW
has compiled research from ComScore and DoubleClick that indicates online viewers are willing to watch nearly as many commercials they are exposed to on air in exchange for free online show viewing, per Ad Age. The CW announced plans during the upfront to combine on air and online ad sales as a single buy for advertisers and plans to release unified on air and online ad viewing data from April.
 
Nielsen
and Sundance Channel have teamed to develop a new “Measurement Innovation Metric” (MIM) to measure an advertising campaign’s effectiveness across multiple networks, regardless of whether the campaign employs branded content or traditional advertising. Some 3,000 online respondents will be queried to determine viewer loyalty and engagement within a branded environment, weighing people meter ratings data against emotional interest and attitudes. Ad receptivity will also be determined by measuring ad skipping and other factors.
                  

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
Sprint announced plans to offer Samsung’s Android-powered Galaxy Tab tablet device for $400 with a two-year contract, $200 less than what Verizon is charging with a prepaid data plan. To get that price, Sprint customers must pay $29.99/mo. to access two GB of data or $59.99/mo. for up to 5 GB.
 
CBS Sports Mobile launched a new BlackBerry app providing scores and coverage of the NFL, College Football, MLB, NBA, College Basketball, NHL, Golf, Tennis, and Auto Racing, along with Fantasy football and baseball news and updates.
 
Telmap introduced the first search, mapping and navigation solution for the new Windows Phone 7 operating system, featuring location-based mapping, turn-by-turn navigation and voice announcements of street names and points of interest. SingTel in Singapore will be the first carrier to launch the app.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
New Digg CEO Matt Williams announced that the company is cutting more than 1/3 of its staff, reducing is work force from 67 to 42 as the company pushes to reach profitability by 2011. Digg Chief Revenue Officer Chas Edwards and CFO John Moffett are among those leaving; Chas will be fill the same role at online image tool maker Pixazza while John will become the new CFO at digital ad start up Vizu.
 
Montreal-based Apartment 11 Productions hired veteran producer Alberta Nokes as Head of Development, reporting to Jonathan Finkelstein, President and Executive Producer.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
It’s no longer your parents’ PBS anymore. The digital arm of PBS has launched a new redesign of PBS.org that exchanges clutter for an industry standard media bar and big visual thumbnails of featured shows. Locally produced programming (viewable through a slick new video player) is organized by genre (News & Public Affairs, History, Arts & Ent., etc.) An integration with Facebook pulls up friends who have “liked” PBS or shared programs on their profiles. PBS has also launched a new free mobile app for the iPad, to go with its 6 edutainment PBS Kids apps designed for youngsters, featuring the first full episode of it’s upcoming 6-part series Circus. An adult-targeted video streaming app for the iPhone and iPod Touch will launch early next month.
