A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM WARNER BROS. DOMESTIC CABLE DISTRIBUTION
NIP/TUCK Airing opposite broadcast competition: NIP/TUCK CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 25, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing. Syndicated strip series Judge Alex from Twentieth Television has been renewed for Season #2 by the Fox Television Stations group. Since its launch during the second week in September, Judge Alex has averaged a 1.3 W18-49 and a 1.5 W25-54, ranking the #1 new strip series this season. * MORE GOOD STUFF *You’ve heard of America’s Next Top Model. Now comes a new project – America’s Next Muppet. According to Variety, ABC has ordered a script of a new “reality” series wherein Muppet Judges evaluate and eliminate various potential Muppet characters, until they’ve whittled it down to just one. And that one will become a new Muppet puppet. Have you heard of Time Warner Cable‘s new service? Hang on … swipe that thru one more time. I said, have you heard of Time Warner Cable’s new service? It’s called Start Over and let’s viewers start a program over again from the beginning (provided they request the do-over before the show is finished). Time Warner has signed a deal with NBC and NBC Universal Cable programs and its stable of networks – NBC, USA, CNBC, MSNBC, Bravo and Sci Fi Channel. Additionally, NBC Universal Cable and Time Warner have renewed their carriage agreement which includes mun2, USA Network, Universal HD, Telemundo Puerto Rico and VOD. The deal also includes NBC News’ on demand content and cable rights, covering NBC Nightly News, MSNBC’s Hardball with Chris Matthews and The Abrams Report and CNBC’s Mad Money and Closing Bell with Maria Bartiromo. NBCU will also create interactive prospects for TWC. BBC Worldwide Americas has signed a licensing and co-production agreement for Hustle with AMC. The US cable channel will pick up the exclusive rights to Hustle’s first and second season as well as co-production responsibilities for season three and an option for the fourth. The run is scheduled to begin in January on AMC. Hustle is described as Ocean’s Eleven in a TV series – that is, focusing in on some of England’s greatest cons artists. MTV2 has officially cancelled its Friday night offering Stankervision. The show in its most recent outing delivered just 62,000 viewers. Yesterday’s Cynopsis question asked who you would like to see ABC News put in the ABC World News Tonight anchor chair. Rumors were flying yesterday that Diane Sawyer had an interest. A statement from ABC News yesterday said that just isn’t going to happen – Sawyer will be sticking with GMA, Primetime and perhaps more primetime documentaries. But don’t let that sway your choice. Who would you like to see get the job, and if that means moving someone from another regular job, how would you fill that vacated post? Send in your picks to Cynopsis and put ABC News Anchor in the subject line. * NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *MTV Films and Paramount Pictures have entered into a two-year first-look deal with Jamie Foxx and his producing partners, Jaime Rucker King and Marcus King. As part of the deal, Foxx, King and Rucker King will provide services in connection with developing, supervising, producing, consulting and Foxx possibly appearing in MTV Films and other Paramount features, all released by Paramount Pictures. MTV has also ordered a pilot from Jason Lee’s production company Niva Films, called The Stereo Sound Agency in a mix of variety, skateboarding an comedy, says Hollywood Reporter. Lee (who also stars in NBC’s My Name is Earl) will co-host the series along with Chris Patras who also co-owns a skateboarding company with Lee called Stereo Skateboards. Sci Fi Channel has ordered new seasons of both Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. Both have received 20-episode season orders, with a look to a summer premiere. Stargate SG-1 has averaged 2.4 million viewers a week season to date, and not to be out done by too much, Stargate Atlantis has averaged 2.3 million viewers a week. Stargate SG-1 is produced by Double Secret Production, and Stargate Atlantis by Acme Shark; both shows are produced in association with MGM and Sony Pictures Television. Fox has acquired the rights to the video game Destroy All Humans from THQ, and plans to turn the game into an animated sitcom. In the game, players direct an alien 1950’s style creature to destroy humans on the planet Earth, all in a tongue-in-cheek salute to the B films of the era. FX has ordered a script of a dark comedy called Confessions of a Tax Collector from Shephard/Robin Co. with the Paramount Network TV-based Solaris. The show is based on a true story about a guy who ends up working for the IRS for 12 year. * EXECUTIVE MOVES *Red Dog Entertainment has appointed Brian Fassett as the company’s first VP/Production. Brian will be responsible for running the operations of Red Dog Entertainment’s New York headquarters and acting as liaison with Red Dog’s Los Angeles office on production activities. Judy Girard has been named President of HGTV effective November 14, 2005. Judy will be heading up an experienced team, including the recent addition of Sarah Cronan, who was promoted to SVP/ HGTV. Other recent organizational changes within the HGTV brand include promotions of Melissa Sykes to SVP/Program Production and James Bolosh to VP/Program Production. Michael Dingley’s role has been expanded to SVP/Programming and Content strategy. Discovery Communications has created a consolidated global New Media group designed to leverage the strength of Discovery’s brands, content and services across emerging digital platforms in markets around the world. Heading up the group is Discovery Communications’ SEVP/Strategy and Development Donald A. Baer. Neville Meijers was named EVP/Business Strategy and New Media, reporting to Donald. Both will be responsible for Discovery’s ongoing long-term business strategy development and for all business development operations for the company. Other key executives named to the group are Tanya Field as SVP/New Media Strategy and Development; and Clint Stinchcomb as SVP/New Media Ops. The New Media group team will work closely with the management of all of the company’s content and product operations units to ensure that Discovery’s brands and services take full advantage of emerging opportunities. * RATINGS *Sunday — A18-49 Analysis: ABC won the night on Sunday with an overall 6.8/16 A18-49 rating, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. Fast affiliate ratings measure time periods, not programs. Therefore, if as in the case of CBS last evening, football runs way over, pushing back the start/end times of all the subsequent shows, the numbers you see here are for the time period specifically, not for the shows. With that said, ABC out-shined the field with a 6.8/16, well above the World Series Game #2 on Fox (4.8/12), as well as CBS 3.7/9, NBC 2.6/6, WB 1.3/3. At 7p football runover on CBS dominated (Giants won with about 4 seconds left on the clock) with a 5.2/15, followed by Game #2 of the World Series delivering a 3.6/10. Both of those sporting events did better among M18-49: CBS 6.5/18 and Fox 4.9/13. At 8p a repeat of EM: Home Edition led with a 4.9/12, and swiped the hour from Fox’s baseball by a single share point. Among M18-49, Fox was in front with a 6.5/15. At 9p Desperate Housewives racked up a win with 10.9/24, even winning in the M18-49 demo with a 7.6/17 by a single share point over baseball. At 10p ABC was again in front with an 8.5/20 for Grey’s Anatomy, while the game delivered a 5.5/13, again winning among M18-49 with a 7.5/18 . A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM COURT TV
The History Channel presents This Day in History: Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question: In the 2004 film Jersey Girl, Ben Affleck’s character Ollie, plays a very successful NY publicist. In a single moment he wrecks his career at a press conference by speaking badly about what TV character? At Court TV, we know exactly what people are looking at on Today’s Trivia Question: Each week Carol Burnett closed her variety show by tugging on her left ear.
