Cyn opsis: Kids!

10/23/07

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 23, 2007, and this is your first early morning. No edition tomorrow …

Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group launched a new ad-free kids subscription service called myNOGGIN ( www.MyNoggin.com ) featuring curriculum-based learning for preschoolers (K3-6) through game play built around Nick Jr. and NOGGIN characters.  In addition to the direct-to-consumer site, priced at $5.95 for a 12-month commitment, $7.95 for six months, or $9.95 month-to-month, Charter and Cox will launch the service on their broadband sites in November as an add-on for their subscribers.  Updated regularly, myNOGGIN will support helping kids with subjects including literacy, math, Spanish language, computer literacy and art, as well as featuring a Parents Center, where the folks can check in on their kid’s progress and providing additional links and activities for them.

Also addressing the digital world for the preschool set this fall is Disney Channel, which expected to unveil plans soon for a virtual experience to support its new Bunnytown educational puppet variety series, according to a TV Week report.  The site will operate in conjunction with Bunnytown, which is slated to premiere in the Playhouse Disney block on November 10, 2007 at 11a.  Following the adventures of a group of bunny characters, Bunnytown is a Disney Channel global production.  The series bows first in the UK on November 3.

Since Paramount Home Entertainment’s release of Transformers on DVD last week, the DreamWorks and Paramount movie has sold 8.3 million units in North America so far, making it one of the years biggest sellers so far.  Transformers has hit the biggest first day sales milestone for the year with 4.5+ million discs selling in its first day of release.  In the HD DVD sales department, Transformers sold 190,000+ discs in its first week, making it the best selling first week release for any HD DVD individual format as well as the best selling HD DVD ever.  Paramount released only an HD DVD version, and not a Blu-ray version of the movie; Paramount announced over the summer it would not support the Blue-ray format.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Nickelodeon has ordered four live-action pilots from its development slate, per Hollywood Reporter.  The network has picked up pilots for:

  • The Troop, an action/comedy about kids protecting the world from evil creatures, from Tommy Lynch and his Tom Lynch Co., created and executive produced by writer/director Greg Coolidge, with scribes Chris Morgan and Max Burnett.
  • The Norton Avenue All-Stars, a comedy about a group of neighborhood friends, from creator/executive producer Boyd Hale.
  • True Fashion, a mix of Project Runway and the movie Big, from creator/executive producer Andy Gordon.
  • One 4 All, a music-based boy band comedy from the fabulous Scott Fellows (Ned’s Declassified)

MORE KIDS STUFF

Pass the Plate, a new group of healthy food centric interstitials premieres this week on Disney Channels around the world, including in the US.  Rotating on-air in multiple languages with subtitles, the segments are targeted to kids, tweens and families, and are hosted by Brenda Song (The Suite Life of Zack & Cody) and feature Disney Channel kid stars from various countries (e.g. Argentina, Australia, China, France, India, Italy, Japan, South Africa, and the UK), discussing healthy eating in their culture/families, and helping to prepare a dish.  Recipes will also be featured online ( www.DisneyChannel.com/passtheplate ), along with pictures, videos and games to further support the nutritional aspects of the initiative.  Produced in association with channels in 10 countries, Pass the Plate is production of Riverstreet Productions.

Nickelodeon premieres Dora Saves the Mermaids, a new hour-long Dora the Explorer environment-focused TV movie on Monday, November 5 at 7p.  In the special Dora turns into a mermaid to help clean up pollution in the ocean, and in doing so saving the Mermaid Kingdom.  Additionally, beginning this week a new Public Service Announcement featuring Cameron Diaz, Dora and real kids, encouraging kids to help keep our oceans clean, debuts on Nick Jr.  From Monday, October 29, 2007 Nick Jr. Video will feature a new music video and sneak peek (2-minutes) from Dora Saves the Mermaids, which will also rollout simultaneously on wireless carriers.  A Dora Saves the Mermaids interactive game and activities can be found at NickJr.com, and a DVD of the TV movie, a Nickelodeon Home Entertainment title, distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment, is currently available in stores.

Nickelodeon has also picked up a new season of its series Just Jordan, bringing the season to 20 new episodes, as the series switches to Saturdays at 8:30p from November 3, 2007.

Australia’s ABC TV and Southern Star Entertainment are beginning production on a third season of teen-targeted drama Blue Water High (26×30), on the northern beaches of Sydney, Australia.  Blue Water High follows six 16-year-olds as they embark on a yearlong residential surfing and school program at solar Blue Surf Academy, and a chance to get into the world pro-surfing circuit.

Cookie Jar Entertainment has inked an all rights agreement with Tele Munchen Gruppe for the action-adventure animated series, Magi-Nation.  Under the deal, Tele Munchen Gruppe holds the exclusive rights in German-speaking territories for the property.  Tele Munchen’s Licensing and Merchandising arm, CTM, will serve as the exclusive agent for Magi-Nation in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Benelux.  The Magi-Nation TV series is a co-production of Cookie Jar and South Korea’s Daewon Media

VOOM HD NetworksAnimania HD acquired three new kids series. Animalia, based on Graeme Base’s picture book of the same name, will make its world premiere on November 2 at 8:30p.  Neptuno Films’ short-form series, The Gloops, will bow on November 3, at 9a as part of a preschool block, Little Big Blocks. Cosmic Quantum Ray (26×30), an international co-production from Taffy Entertainment/Mike Young Productions, Method Films, M6, KIKA/ARD, Europool, Telegael, SKC&C, UTV, and Ocean Productions, Inc., will bow November 7, at 8m.

MARKETING/LICENSING

McDonald’s and DreamWorks Animation have teamed in a Happy Meal promotional for Jerry Seinfeld’s new animated feature film, Bee Movie.  Additionally, McDonald’s DreamWorks and Conservation International have joined together to for Bee Good to the Planet, a global effort that supports the movie’s environmental messaging and encourages kids to have fun, learn, get outside and take action.  The Bee Movie Happy Meal promotion begins October 26 in North America, and rolling out globally through the end of the year.  The restaurant chain will also support the movie and Conservation International, which has projects in South Africa and Mexico protecting threatened bee habitats, online with Bee good to the Planet tips for helping the planet.  On some talk show or the other this week, Seinfeld said that when he began to make the movie he had no idea about the environmental issues relating to bees around the world, but once he found out it was a natural to support the environmental efforts.  I’d say so.
