Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 22, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
As we get ready to hit the 100 day mark ahead of the Sochi Olympics, NBC Olympics and the NBCUniversal networks will celebrate the countdown with the newest phase of their multi-platform marketing initiative boosted by a 20-channel promotional Roadblock in the 8p slot on Oct. 29. In addition, the company will participate at the kickoff of the USOC’s Road to Sochi Tour in New York City’s Times Square that same day. Other elements will include the reemergence of the NBC Peacock “bug” with the Olympic rings; four Olympic spots narrated by Giancarlo Esposito; a local push on over 230 local broadcast affiliates; and – in the final three and a half weeks leading up to the Games – NBCUniversal will prioritize its Olympic promotional ads across its 18 cable channels. The Olympics’ first primetime broadcast takes place on Feb. 6 with the Opening Ceremony on Feb. 7.
Peyton Manning’s return to Indianapolis sparked a high for NBC’s SNF with the game earning a 17.3 overnight ratings and 29 share. The score marks the best primetime overnight for an October game in 15 years as well as a 48% boost over last season’s Week 7 SNF matchup. The 17.3 is the fourth-highest overnight in the eight-year history of NBC’s primetime package. Top markets included local market records in Denver and Indianapolis with a 49.6/71 and 49.1/71 respectively. Rounding out the top five were Kansas City, New Orleans and Albuquerque.
Turner Sports officially launches Kia NBA Tip-Off ’13 with three consecutive nights of doubleheader coverage across TNT and NBA TV starting Tuesday, Oct. 29. For NBA fans in New York City, TNT’s studio show will become part of an on-site attraction open to the public and sponsored by 2K at Flatiron Plaza, complete with a basketball court, NBA 2K14 video game kiosks, and a massive video board perched 30 feet above Broadway and Fifth Avenue serving as a viewing area for fans. Turner will team up with NBA Cares to promote physical fitness and healthy living for kids and families. Turner Sports will also set up an NBA on TNT social media vending machine at various locations throughout New York City, giving fans a chance to collect free prizes ranging from copies of the NBA2K14 game, golden tickets for meet and greets with the Inside the NBA studio team and more.
FOX Sports 1 is looking to launch the college basketball season with a bang, slating the Big East Tip-Off Party for Friday, Oct. 25 at 9p. FOX Sports studio host Rob Stone joins Bill Raftery and Tarik Turner to host the program live from Studio A at the FOX Network Center in Los Angeles. Once the season begins, Turner serves as a Big East game analyst for FOX Sports. Additional play-by-play broadcasters and game analysts are to be announced shortly. The special will showcase highlights from each school’s celebration, including scrimmages by the men’s and women’s teams, skills contests, Coach Willard’s head-to-head showdown with competitive hot dog eating sensation Takeru Kobayashi and musical guests at select campuses like DJ Nick Cannon at Providence, B.O.B. at Georgetown and more.
FOX Sports also released the companies broadcast plans for the Nov. 2 matchups on FOX and FOX Sports 1. The company will feature an Oklahoma State/Texas Tech showdown on FOX at 7p. FOX Sports 1’s games begin at 3:30p with Iowa State/Kansas State, followed by Colorado/UCLA at 7:30p.
HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel is teaming up with the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion and the Marist College Center for Sports Communication to launch a polling initiative that will be unveiled when the series’ 199th edition debuts tonight at 10p. The new partnership allows the show to report national public opinion on key issues with the results incorporated into various parts of the program by host Bryant Gumbel.
U.S. Men’s National Team and Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard is set to team up with Arlo White in the broadcast booth to call the Chelsea/Manchester City match Sunday at noon on NBCSN. Howard dons the microphone a day after suiting up for Everton in their Saturday match at Aston Villa.
Outdoor-lifestyle television network Sportsman Channel locked in a production agreement with Pilgrim Studios for three series that will debut on the network in 2014. Other series from Pilgrim studios include the likes of The Ultimate Fighter, American Chopper, Dirty Jobs and Ghost Hunters.
Universal Sports Network announced plans for live television and online coverage of the 118th Boston Marathon on Monday, April 21, 2014 from 9:30a-12:30p. Pre- and post-race shows will run at 8:30a and 12:30p with a wrap-up show set for 4p. Additional programming will be announced at a later date dedicated to recognizing, supporting and telling the stories of those affected by the tragic events of April 15, 2013.
RIP to Titan owner Stanley “Bud” Adams who died on Monday at 90. Adams founded the Houston Oilers in 1959 as part of the new American Football League. “Bud Adams played a pivotal role in the growth of pro football as a pioneer and innovator,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in a statement. “As a founding owner of the American Football League that began play in 1960, Bud saw the potential of pro football and brought the game to new cities and new heights of popularity, first in Houston and then in Nashville.”

ESPN debuted the newest addition to its This is SportsCenter franchise, tapping Minnesota Timberwolves star Kevin Love and UCLA mascot Joe Bruin for the promo, dubbed Double, Double. In the 30-second spot, Kevin Love pushes a coffee cart around ESPN’s headquarters to caffeinate anchors and mascots while Scott Van Pelt discusses the importance of Love’s cart in keeping the staff awake. However, host Stan Verrett consumes a few too many of Love’s double-doubles of espresso, startling his co-host Neil Everett.
Speaking of ESPN, the sports channel is bring back the ESPN NBA RV campaign this week for the seventh year, in celebration of the launch of the NBA season. The 30-second spot features analysts Jalen Rose and Mike Breen sleeping soundly in the RV while bunkmates Bill Simmons and Chicago Bulls’ star Joakim Noah “deliver a frustrated monologue about their sleeping arrangements.” Jeff Van Gundy also appears in the ad.
The NFL is marking the 40th anniversary of its partnership with the United Way by teaming up with USA TODAY Sports Media Group to host a nationwide vote to select the best NFL/United Way PSA from the past 40 years. The spots will be powered by the USA TODAY Ad Meter with the top 40 selections revealed over a four week period.
The NBA is embracing local fans and is near a deal to become the first major U.S.-based sports league to allow its games to be streamed live locally, according to a report from SBJ. The report states that the league locking in TV Everywhere deals with Fox Sports Media Group and NBC Sports Group to allow the games to be streamed while other RSNs, are expected to offer live in-market streaming later this season.
Madison Square Garden unveiled the design for the Arena’s new center-hung multi-media display. The display will serve as the centerpiece of The Garden’s brand-new LED video display system, known as GardenVision, and debut on October 25 as part of the third and final phase of The Garden’s overhaul. This new, original multi-media display will consist of 24 individual high-definition LED displays, which are curved to mirror the circular design of The Garden. The four main video displays measure 15.7 feet tall by 28 feet wide. Directly above those displays are four auxiliary video displays measuring more than 6 feet tall by 29 feet wide.
