Good morning, it’s Tuesday, October 21, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Days after NBC Local Media took its web operations in house LIN TV announced it was breaking with website partner WorldNow to begin a new relationship with Fox Interactive Media, which will power the backend of LIN’s 28 station sites including local Fox affiliates in Green Bay, Mobile AL, Providence RI, Norfolk VA, Albuquerque NM and Toledo OH. The deal is more of a technology play according to LIN TV SVP/New Media Robb Richter, as the FIM platform provides the company with more flexibility to customize its sites as it sees fit. The sites will relaunch over the coming weeks beginning with LIN’s wpri.com, wishtv and fox10tv.com, which have already made the switch. New features will include a revamped video player, customized ad spaces and improved social networking functionality. LIN is FIM’s first third-party client.


Fox TV Studios announced its first homegrown digital serial: a 13-episode web series called The Skinny: Fat-Free News, currently available on MySpaceTV and at Hulu.com. (Not to be confused with celeb dieting blog The Skinny Website.) The Skinny will also be available across multiple video aggregation sites including YouTube, Metacafe, Dailymotion and Blip.tv, as well as social networking site Facebook.com. The Skinny is the result of a think-tank of creative types encouraged to develop original content for the web, henceforth to be known as 15 Gigs.
Taking a page from MTV and others, CBS Interactive announced it will provide social viewing rooms on CBS.com beginning Wednesday where fans can gather to watch primetime, daytime and CBS classic shows while chatting, participating in polls and otherwise interact with the content. Intel is sponsoring the feature.
ION Media will make the jump to HD next year, launching high-def feeds for its trio of networks beginning with ION Television during Q1, followed by upgrades of children’s network qubo and lifestyle channel ION Life later in the year. The network will feature native and up-converted HD programming and will be carried on all 60 of Ion Media Network’s television stations across the country.
Cartoon Network has partnered with Albie Hecht’s Worldwide Biggies Inc. to adapt the non-fiction children’s horror book series NASTYbook from storyteller Barry Yourgrau. The twisted cautionary tales from the popular book series will be developed into a live-action/CGI film for the network as well as an array of web-based content.
Tribune Media Services signed a deal with mobile marketing firm Vibes Media to distribute TMS content in mobile formats including regularly scheduled SMS text blasts. Carriers such as U.S. Cellular, which will launch the service later this month, will offer subscribers regular content from syndicated columnists including Garrison Keillor, Dave Barry, Wolfgang Puck, Rick Steves, Arianna Huffington, Linda Black and Henry Kissinger.


The normally female focused Glam Media launched its first vertical for men Brash, a lifestyle and entertainment hub for guys aggregating more than 25 male targeted sites including ArtistDirect; DigitalTrends.com; eCoustics.com; SpiralFrog.com and InGameNowSeriousWheels.com. VidCat and HowCast.com are among those contributing video. 
signed a deal to syndicate comedic video produced by stand-up comedy producer RooftopComedy on its linear network and via Current.com. Current TV plans to feature a weekly show featuring stand-up performances from around the U.S. with a focus on topical gags.
From the creators of The Onion and The A.V. Club comes Decider.com. No, it’s not another political site. It’s a localized blog profiling events, musical gigs, restaurants and bars, designed to be powered by users. The site launched with versions for Chicago and Madison, WI.


Time Warner Cable
introduced FameStar, a new online mashup tool powered by Oddcast allowing users to create their own mock celebrity exposes of themselves. The interface calls for the subject to upload their photo, decide on a story arch then add dialogue. Your creation can be shared with friends via integrations with a variety of social networking sites.


Following the buyout of the 49% of mobile content company Jamba it didn’t’ already own, News Corp. announced a reorganization of the Fox Mobile Group to be headed by former Jamba CEO Mauro Montanaro. FMG also announced an expansion into the Asia Pacific region with a new regional office in Singapore. FMG will now manage three distinct units:

  • Fox Mobile Distribution will distribute mobile content through multiple consumer brands including Jamba in Europe and Jamster in the U.S., UK, Canada, Russia and Asia
  • Fox Mobile Entertainment will license content to third parties for mobile usage
  • Fox Mobile Studios will develop original content for the mobile platform

A&E Television Networks signed with VOD services provider TVN Entertainment to expand its on demand offerings. The deal enables A&E to avail itself of TVN’s asset management and measurement tools such as the programmer tool iPRI, which allows networks to make real-time metadata updates on a site-by-site basis.


The race for the White House has raised all boats in the online political publishing realm increasing traffic by a factor of three in some cases, notes Mediaweek in a roundup of Nielsen Online data:

  • MSNBC.com increased its uniques by 13 million since last Sept. now counting 43.2 million
  • Yahoo News traffic is up 5.7 million uniques during same period to 38 million
  • CNN is up 6.4 million uniques to 37 million
  • ABCNews.com increased by 8 million uniques to 17.2 million
  • FoxNews.com nearly doubled its base to 14.9 million uniques

For today’s married-with-children households, ownership of multiple gadgets and communication tools have become a standard feature of family life according to a new study from the Pew Internet and American Life Project. And rather than pull them apart technology is actually helping family members stay connected. But rapid technology adoption is not without its victims as more than 25% of all adults say the internet has decreased time spent watching TV. That number increases to 29% for 18-29 year olds.

MTV Networks International (MTVNI) has upped Gideon Bierer to EVP/Digital Media.  Based in New York, Gideon will oversee all of MTVNI’s online and mobile properties and will drive the company’s overall Digital Media strategy, including creating content and forming strategic partnerships. He will continue reporting to Robert Bakish, President of MTVNI.
Turner Sports/NBA venture NBA Digital announced the addition of Steve Quintana as Executive Interactive Producer, overseeing programming and production for NBA.com, WNBA.com and NBADLeague.com from its facility in Atlanta. He will work with the digital teams for the three league sites and provide strategic development of multi-platform content across TV, web and mobile. Steve reports to Bryan Perez, SVP and GM of NBA Digital.
Jodi Kahn has been named EVP of iVillage Network along with Rebecca Miskin, who has been promoted to General Manager under Ms. Kahn. Jodi will oversee ad sales, technology, research and marketing, and multi-platform partnerships, reporting to Lauren Zalaznick, President, NBC Universal Women and Lifestyle Entertainment Networks. Rebecca is responsible for editorial oversight, product development strategy, community, and partnership maximization of the iVillage core sites, as well as iVillage UK and Astrology.com. Both appointments will be effective as of Monday, Nov. 3.
Online news site and magazine Newsmax Media named Rick Pedraza as Managing Editor of Newsmax.com, to be based in West Palm Beach, FL. Rick comes over from Chicago-based Putman Media where he served as Managing Editor of Digital Media.



Social network app creator Watercooler announced a new syndication deal with ABC and a newly expanded one with Hulu to enable full episode viewing of primetime shows directly from Watercooler’s TVLoop apps from across the ABC, Fox and NBC Universal landscape. Until now TVLoop (identifiable on Facebook as Addicted to “The Office”, or whatever show you’re a fan of) facilitated trivia quizzes and other related activities, attracting an aggregate community of 15 million users across the leading social networking sites. Adding video – delivered as links to ABC’s Move Networks player and from Hulu via a mini version of the Hulu player monetized by pre- post-roll ads – may really help shows convert users into regular viewers. Now newbies will be able to instantly see what everyone’s talking about. The ability to geek out, watch video and actively recruit fans should prove to be potent tools. ABC (which as been reluctant to syndicate its content online to third parties) signing on is a tribute to Watercooler’s persistence and uniqueness, figures CEO Kevin Chou. “The fact that we’ve deeply integrated the functionality into the APIs of 5 major social networks has also been a key selling point,” he said. “We’ve done all the hard work.”
